Webcasts : Laser Focus World Fundamentals of Photonics: Fiber Lasers Date : 03/19/2009 Time and place : 1:00 PM, Sinclair Lab Room 124 Length: approximate 1 hour Overview: Fiber lasers have relatively recently burst upon the photonics scene as something manufacturers are eager to offer in their product line-up, and something users are clamoring for. In this webcast, the third of the Fundamentals of Photonics series, Laser Focus World contributing editor and author Jeff Hecht, reviews fiber laser basics, including their design, type of active material in the core, properties, and the advantages of various designs. He also reviews different types of pump sources, oscillators, amplifiers, and fiber laser applications. About the Presenters: Jeff Hecht Author and Contributing Editor Laser Focus World Jeff Hecht has written about laser and optical technology for more than 30 years and is the author of nine books covering the field. His most recent book is the third edition of Understanding Lasers: An Entry-Level Guide, just out from IEEE Press. Other books include Understanding Fiber Optics, now in its fifth edition, The Laser Guidebook, Beam - the Race to Make the Laser, City of Light: The Story of Fiber Optics, and Laser: Light of a Million Uses. Jeff is a long-time contributing editor to Laser Focus World, and has taught short courses at conferences sponsored by IEEE, SPIE, and the Optical Society of America. He holds a BS in electronic engineering from Caltech.
