HIGHEST HONOURS FOR OUTSTANDING HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS 12 July 2017 For Immediate Release The National Healthcare Group (NHG) presented awards to 18 individuals, six Education Leaders, and 13 teams today at the annual NHG Awards. This year s winners cut across 15 disciplines, and share a strong passion to improve care for patients beyond hospital walls. The Awards ceremony was held at the Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) Theatrette. The NHG Awards ceremony recognises some of our outstanding colleagues for their tireless dedication and relentless pursuit for excellence in patient-centred care. These are individuals and teams whose contributions have collectively raised the standards of healthcare in Singapore, and brought quality to the lives of patients and the community that we serve, said NHG Chairman Madam Kay Kuok. Distinguished Senior Clinician Award This year s top award was presented to Associate Professor Suresh Sahadevan, Senior Consultant at the Centre for Geriatric Medicine, Cognition and Memory Disorders Service at TTSH. With over 32 years in public healthcare service, he has made significant contributions in the areas of Geriatric and General Medicine. A/Prof Suresh established the first Memory Clinic and Cognitive Service in TTSH, which provides holistic and person-centred care to Singapore s growing population of seniors with cognitive problems such as dementia. Caregivers have also benefitted from resource materials which A/Prof Suresh and his team have produced, by better equipping them to care for their loved ones living with dementia in the community and at home. His passion for training clinicians in General Medicine has resulted in the creation of a Comprehensive Case Analysis (CCA) tool to help junior doctors better analyse patients increasingly complex medical conditions. CCA is now a core component of the TTSH Residency posting to inculcate independent decision-making skills and clinical maturity of junior doctors. 1

NHG Outstanding Citizenship Award Dr Wu Huei Yaw, Senior Consultant of the Palliative Care Clinic at TTSH, is a champion of End-of-Life care. He helped establish Singapore s first Department of Palliative Medicine in 2008, and conceptualised the End-of-Life Care Rooms which enable loved ones to spend precious time with patients during their last days in private. Dr Wu was seconded to the Dover Park Hospice (DPH) as Medical Director from 2013 to 2016, where he helped set up programmes to bridge care for patients between the acute hospital, hospice and home. He is currently working to expand palliative home care services further into the community. Dr Wu has also published several papers on palliative and hospice care in local and international medical journals. Mdm Lim Chuen, Jamie, Assistant Director of Nursing at TTSH, has over 20 years of experience in public healthcare. As a pioneering Advanced Practice Nurse (APN), she established the APN-led Clinic with Cardiologists in 2009, to facilitate more timely follow-ups for patients with heart conditions post-cardiac assessment patient reviews can be done within two months instead of the usual four to five months. Since 2008, Mdm Lim has also volunteered regularly for medical missions to the Philippines, East Timor, China and Thailand. She received the President s Award for Nurses in 2011. Ms Chan Soo Chung is Executive Director of NHG Pharmacy (NHGPh). Since 2003, NHGPh has pioneered pharmacy services in the Intermediate and Long-Term Care sector, and later introduced ConviDose for nursing homes (NH) in 2010. The ConviDose service customises and packs medications in sachets for individual NH residents with chronic conditions. Some 7,485 patients in 30 ILTC facilities are currently using the service. ConviDose has clinched multiple accolades including the IT Excellence: Beyond Quality to Value Award at the recent National Health IT Excellence Awards 2017. Ms Chan also spearheaded the launch of the Outpatient Automation System (OPAS) in NHG Polyclinics, which improved medication safety and reduced unnecessary waiting time for patients. NHG Young Achiever Award Mr Kalaivanan S/O Dakshnamoorthy, Senior Nurse Manager at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), helmed the High Dependency Psychiatric Care Unit (HDPCU) between 2008 and 2015. The ward cares for highly-disturbed patients at IMH. His peers and staff regard him as a caring mentor, who constantly motivates them to excel in nursing care. Under his leadership, the 2

HDPCU team clinched the Best Clinical Unit award at IMH Nurses Day Awards consecutively from 2010 to 2016. The award recognises excellence in patient management and clinical care. His research paper and presentation on Effects of Primary Nursing in the High Dependency Psychiatric Care Unit was also featured in the American Psychiatric Nurses Association 28 th Annual Conference in 2014. He now cares for forensic patients who are remanded at IMH by the Courts of the Republic of Singapore. Ms Kho Siok Wah, Serene became the youngest Head of Laboratory at NHG Diagnostics (NHGD) in 2015. Under her leadership, NHGD laboratories have developed several initiatives to provide better, safer, faster and more affordable services to enhance the quality of care for patients in the community. She established the Home Phlebotomy team in August 2016, which has since visited some 50 wheelchair and bed-bound patients at home to draw blood for laboratory tests, making it more convenient for patients and caregivers. Besides building in-house capabilities, Ms Kho has spearheaded community care with Ang Mo Kio and Hougang Family Medicine Clinics to provide diagnostic services. This has reduced the need for patients to make additional visits to hospitals or polyclinics. NHG Education Leaders Award Dr Martin Chio, Senior Consultant, NSC is an expert on Sexually Transmitted Infections and Head of DSC (Department of Sexually Transmitted Infections Control Clinic). He oversees STI education and teaching programmes under the Dermatology Residency Programme. He is also Chairman of the Chapter of Dermatologists, for the Academy of Medicine in Singapore. About the National Healthcare Group The National Healthcare Group (NHG) is a leader in public healthcare in Singapore, recognised at home and abroad for the quality of its medical expertise and facilities. Care is provided through an integrated network of nine primary healthcare polyclinics, acute care and tertiary hospitals, national specialty centres and business divisions. Together they bring a rich legacy of medical expertise to our philosophy of integrated patient-centred care. NHG s vision is Adding Years of Healthy Life. This vision goes beyond merely healing the sick to the more difficult and infinitely more rewarding task of preventing illness and preserving health and quality of life. With some 13,000 staff, NHG aims to provide care that is patientcentric, accessible, seamless, comprehensive, appropriate and cost-effective. As the Regional Health System (RHS) for Central Singapore, it is vital for NHG to partner and collaborate with stakeholders, community advisors, and voluntary welfare organisations. Together with our patients, their families and caregivers, we aim to deliver integrated healthcare services and programmes that help in Adding Years of Healthy Life to all concerned. More information is available at www.nhg.com.sg. About the NHG Awards The annual NHG Awards started in 2001 with the inaugural Lee Foundation NHG Lifetime Achievement Award.
