COURSE DESCRIPTION Cognitive Interpersonal Therapy (CIT) is a new treatment developed by Dr. Burns to help patients deal with anger, resolve conflicts and develop more satisfying relationships. You will learn this basic, flexible approach, which can be used to treat patients with a wide variety of relationship conflicts. You will also learn strategies for dealing with angry patients who blame others and resist change; and paradoxical methods to boost motivation and empower the patients. This program is suggested for psychologists, social workers, counselors, psychiatric nurses, advanced graduate students and other healthcare professionals with an intermediate knowledge in this field. It is not suitable for the general public. STATEMENT OF NEED Psychotherapists working with individuals, couples, and families frequently deal with issues involving anger, intimacy, trust, communication, and other kinds of interpersonal difficulties. Needs assessment data collected from a variety of sources indicate training in practical effective methods for dealing with these problems would be of ongoing value to professional therapists. David Burns' live workshop, was developed to address these needs. This home study will allow professionals for whom attending a live workshop is difficult or inconvenient to receive the same training benefit and increase their clinical skills. GOALS & OBJECTIVES Overall goal: Participants will learn about the overpowering role of motivation in maintaining interpersonal conflict, along with new paradoxical treatment methods that focus on the resistance to intimacy. The course will help you to: Measure marital satisfaction, depression, anxiety, anger and the quality of the therapeutic alliance. Be better able to integrate Cognitive Interpersonal Therapy (CIT) with your own spiritual beliefs. Describe crucial differences between the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Cognitive Interpersonal Therapy (CIT). Develop a meaningful therapeutic agenda with patients with personal relationship problems. Deal with individuals who resist intimacy, sabotage therapy and blame others for their problems. Resolve your own relationship problems with patients, colleagues, or family members. CONTENT ADVISORY: This advanced workshop includes descriptions, videotapes, audiotapes, and/or reenactments of actual therapy sessions. Some of the case material may contain graphic descriptions of violence, sexual activity, or other content which could be disturbing, especially to participant who themselves have had similar experiences. The workshop is intended for health professionals and advanced students, who participate in at their own risk. If you find portions of the program upsetting, or if you need assistance for any other reason, please notify the instructor or program coordinator. 3
