2 GW Bates will present a lecture on campus Thursday, April 5, 2018 at noon in 8A-33. Bates completed his Ph.D. in Systems and Engineering Management from Texas Tech and previously received a Masters from the University of Washington and a bachelors from Cal Poly. Bates has lectured on Cal Poly s campus since 2012. Mohammed Sadek will present a lecture on campus Monday, April 9, 2018 at 11AM in 8A-33. Sadek completed his PhD in Biosystems Engineering from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg in 2013 and previously attended the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand and the Bangladesh Agricultural University in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. Pizza will be provided prior to the event.

March 28, 2018 4 2018 SUMMER PAID INTERNSHIP Dam Safety The Turlock Irrigation District operates and maintains five hydroelectric projects with 27 dams and dikes. This unique opportunity will expose interns to dams and hydroelectric facilities, inspections and assessments, capital improvement projects, operation and maintenance, regulatory compliance, and other work. All interns must be active college students or recent graduates in a relevant engineering field with a GPA of 3.0 or better. Summer Schedule 2018 Up to 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; occasional schedule changes as needed to meet the requirements of the job. Supervision Will report to the Chief Dam Safety Engineer Must be able to work under direct supervision, in a team environment, and independently Primary Purpose This position will be responsible for managing or contributing to one or more assigned projects. Frequent professional communication and interaction with internal customers is required. By the end of the internship, the intern will have completed a minimum of one assigned project and will present a summary of their project(s) to upper-management. Essential Responsibilities and Expectations Define problems, research alternatives, and collect/analyze data to determine best processes and methods for a solution Lead/oversee assigned project(s) of various scope and complexity Create, input, format, maintain and update a variety of projects, reports and spreadsheets Regularly and clearly communicate with manager and internal customers on the status of projects Display professionalism at all times Present project information at the end of the internship to communicate research, findings and analysis Requirements Full time student or recent graduate in good standing actively pursuing or having earned a degree in Civil, Mechanical, Geotechnical, or related engineering field Ability to work a minimum of 320 hours during the 2018 summer/fall Ability to demonstrate professional verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills Excellent computer skills especially in Excel, Word and PowerPoint Ability to manage multiple tasks Pass pre-employment drug screening, physical screening, and criminal background check Interested applicants, please contact Adam Bolanos at abbolanos@tid.org or at (209) 883-8620 to submit your application by April 30, 2018. 6 THRIVE-X CHALLENGE LAUNCH YOUR AGTECH STARTUP WIN $10,000 AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRESENT YOUR AGTECH IDEA TO LEADING AGRICULTURE COMPANIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD What is the THRIVE-X Challenge? Students are tasked with developing a solution to solve one of agriculture s toughest problems how to solve the shortage of labor affecting the harvest of crops. Who is eligible to apply? The THRIVE-X Challenge is open to all students attending Cal Poly SLO and Santa Clara University. Students will form teams, whereupon each team must identify a team leader who will register their team at www.thriveagtech.com/thrive-xregistration by April 27, 2018. What is the application comprised of? Teams will develop their solution, write it up, and then build a 3-minute video summarizing why their solution is the best approach to labor shortages in agriculture. The final write-up and video should be submitted online no later than May 25, 2018. SWE Welcome Volunteer and Host Recruitment! 8 Who: Hosts are female engineering students, Day-Of-Volunteers are any students in engineering majors. What: An opportunity to volunteer with conditionally accepted high school girls. Day hosts will show their shadow students around campus and take them to classes, while night hosts will provide a place to stay in their on campus residence hall for the night. Hosts can have shadows for the day on Thursday, the night from Thursday to Friday, or both! All night hosts must live on campus. Day-Of-Volunteers will assist with checking in the participants and other tasks to help the event run smoothly. All hosts and volunteers will receive a free lunch and t-shirt!
