ALAMELU Esteemed Members, Greetings, I am happy to announce that the Madras Section is celebrating the IEEE day on 10 th October 2015 at Hotel Palm Grove, Chennai as a half a day programme. It is going to be a day of pride and celebration for all the members of IEEE from students to life senior members. That would be a day recalling the legacy of the Madras Section and also presenting a consolidation on various awards and recognitions available through R10 and Head Quarters. I once again request all the student branches to celebrate IEEE day with lot of creativity and innovation and report them to the section office. I received more reports from IEEE stuendt Branches and I am not able accommodate all the reports in one issue and this issue contains two issues (IEEE MAS LINK Vol. 12 Issue 08 AUGUST 2015 and IEEE MAS LINK Vol. 12 Issue 09, AUGUST 2015). IEEE MADRAS section is celebrating IEEE day on 10 th October 2015. I also join with the Chairman in celebrating IEEE day. I request every Student chapter to celebrate the IEEE day and send the report for publication in IEEE MAS LINK. This year campus placement started with Top Engineering Institutions notching 30% of the share. VIT University tops the list with 7947 placements by 10 companies with. highest pay package of 22 lakhs per annum. This positive trend will continue and all Engineering Colleges will get their share. I convey my best wishes for all the students appearing for campus placement. In the IEEE MAS LINK, we are publishing only reports received from Student branches. We have to add more information in the news letter. I request all the members to send a brief bio data of the member with photo and I will publish the informtion in the news letter. Interested student branch can use the services of the members for thier activities. This item will appear as KNOW THE IEEE MEMBER. 200 th birthdays of ADA LOVELACE (1815-1852) and GEORGE BOOLE (1815-1864) are going to be celebrated all over the world. We also will celebrate their birth days by recognising their contribution to the computing world. I request the IEEE student branches to organize some event in connction with their birthdays. ST.JOSEPH S COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING COMPETE TO SUCCEED Women in Engineering Affinity Group organsied an event Compete to succeed on 25.07.2015. 11 teams with 3 members in each team participated.the event comprised of three rounds. The first round was MIND DRILL which was a written test conducted for 15 minutes. This round tested the awareness of the participants about the famous women and the facts about them. This round also had jumbled words to test their IQ. 8 teams were selected to participate in 2 nd round based on their score. The Second round was PICTIONARY which was an interesting round. In this round, two words were given to each team. Each team has to guess those words with the help of pictures drawn by one member of that team in 90 seconds. Based on the performance of the teams in this round, 5 teams were selected to compete in the final round. The final round was SQUEEZE YOUR BRAIN which was a challenging round. In this round, each team was requested to write rapidly as many words as possible related to the question given in fifty seconds. The welcome address was given by Dr. A. Rajadurai, Dean, MIT, Anna University, presided over by Dr. S. Ganesan, Registrar, Anna University and the inaugural address was given by Dr. V. Kamakoti, Professor, Department of CSE, IIT Madras. Dr. Subrahmanya VRK Rao, CTS delivered keynote and plenary address. Dr. V. Workshop on Video Analytics The workshop on Video Analytics was organized by Department of Electronics Engineering, Department of Information Technology and AU-KBC Research Centre in association with IEEE Madras Section in MIT on 10 th October 2014. The welcome address was given by Dr. S. ThamaraiSelvi, Dean, MIT, Anna University, presided over by Dr. S. Ganesan, Registrar, Anna University and the inaugural address was given by Dr. R. KONGU ENGINEERING COLLEGE Python Workshop One day workshop on PYTHON was organized by the IEEE Student Branch on 1 st August 2015.. Digital India Celebration The IEEE student branch and IETE Student Chapter ccelebrated the Digital India event on 7/7/2015.Ms.Lakshmi, Chairman, IETE student forum welcomed the gathering. Dr.S.Selvan, Principal, delivered the presidential address on the components of the digital India scheme such as digital infrastructure, Governance and services on demand and digital empowerment and its challenges in cyber security. Dr.R.RaniHemaMalini, Prof. and Head, Department of ECE and student counselor of IETE briefed about the advantages of digital India scheme to get student scholarship, digital lock, and the digital services in Health, Agriculture and Banking. Dr.V.Amudha, Prof., E.C.E bribed on IEEE and IETE member benefits and online resource utilizations. KINGS COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING POWER GENERATION AND DISTRIBUTION R&D section and IEEE student branch organized a guest lecture on Power Generation & Distribution on 24 th July 2015. Er. S. Sambath, Assistant Executive Engineer, TANGEDCO, Mannargudi, was the resource person. In his lecture, he detailed the various methods of power generation and distribution. He also explained the operation of various power plants including solar, thermal, nuclear, hydro, geothermal and combined power generation system. He encouraged the students to do their projects in renewable energy system and smart grid, such as solar, wind and hybrid power generation, which is the future of power generation. Arputha Vijaya Selvi, Dean (R&D) NATIONAL ENGINEERING COLLEGE Inaugural of IEEE CS SBC The inaugural ceremony of IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter was held on 08.07.2015 in the august presence of Mani Veeranan, President and CEO, Chief Guest, Mr.Chetan Rai,Vice President, Special Guest SUMTWO Softwares Pvt Ltd, Madurai. Also IEEE CS SBC initiated the MOU between SUM TWO Softwares Pvt Ltd & NEC in order to launch incubation centre at NEC, Kovilpatti. In chief guests address, he wished for the success of the IEEE CS SBC association and he stated that the incubation centre will bring the students closer to current technologies through projects and internships. The newly selected office bearers of IEEE CS SBC for the year 2015-16 were introduced. KNOWLEDGE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY GLOBAL RESEARCH TRENDS The IEEE SB in association with ECE department and Human Resource Development Cell organized a Guest Lecture on Global Research Trends on 03.08.2015. The chief guest for the program wss Mr.Ravichandran Krishnamurthy, Faculty of school of management, New York Institute of Technology, Abu Dhabi Campus, UAE. In the presence of Dr.PSS.Srinivasan, Principal, Dr. K.Visagavel, Vice Principal and Dr.N.Santhiyakumari, Prof & Head/ECE, Knowledge Institute of Technology, Salem. The Chief Guest explained about how to prepare the research articles and how to get the fund from the external agencies. He also gave the awareness about the Research publications. ORGANIZATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS The IEEE SB in association with ECE department and Human Resource Development Cell organized Faculty Development Program on Organizational Effectiveness from 29-07-2015 to 01.08.2015. The chief guest for the program was Mr.S.Venkatanivasan, Freelance Trainer, Chennai. In the presence of Dr.PSS.Srinivasan, Principal, Dr. K.Visagavel, Vice Principal and Dr.N.Santhiyakumari, Prof & Head/ECE. The Chief Guest explained about how to satisfy the Internal and External customers through effective communication. He also explained about the perception, How to avoid the perception and how to become high-flyers in life. BENEFITS OF IEEE & AWARENESS MEET IEEE Student Branch organized Benefits of IEEE & Awareness Meet. on 23/07/2015. The session was conducted by Dr.N.Santhiyakumari, IEEE SB Counsellor, Prof & Head/ECE. She gave the awareness about the IEEE and its Benefits for the young Engineers. All the students were actively interacted and cleared their doubts regarding IEEE membership during this session with much enthusiasm and interest. EMBEDDED SYSTEMS AND ITS ROLE IN IOT The IEEE Student Branch in association with ECE department organized ECE Association (INTEC) Inaugural and Guest lecture on Embedded Systems and its Role in IOT on 22-07-2015. The chief guest for the program was Mr. V.S.Ramesh, Director-Technical, Steps Knowledge Services Pvt. Ltd.,Coimbatore. in the presence of Dr.PSS.Srinivasan, Principal, Dr.K.Visagavel, Vice Principal, Dr.N.Santhiyakumari, Prof & Head/ECE. He discussed about the new technologies in Embedded Systems. He gave a brief introduction about the role of IoT in industries. He asked students to learn new things in a innovative way. and he also said that we have to prepare for the future. He described about analog maker contest and Webench contest. He described about embedded system design. To learn embedded system, we should have the adequate knowledge in electronics design. He said that TI conducting TI university program Teaching Lab (TI Lab). He described about I 2 C, SPI controller interface and MSP 430. Interfaces currently TI launched internet on chip for Iot purpose. He gave a brief introduction on internet of things. Automotive in IoT Home in IoT, Fitness and health care in IoT as a wearable technology it will communicate to the doctor. MISSION 10X - ENGINEERING FACULTY WORKSHOP The IEEE SB in association with ECE department and Human Resource Development Cell organized Workshop on MISSION 10X - Engineering Faculty Workshop from 06-07-2015 to 08.07.2015. The chief guest for the program was Prof. Satheesh Kumar, Wipro Technology, Bengaluru. in the presence of Dr.PSS.Srinivasan, Principal, Dr. K.Visagavel, Vice Principal, Dr.N.Santhiyakumari, Prof & Head/ECE. The chief guest taught about practical oriented teaching and activity based teaching-learning methods for better understanding to the students. All the participants are actively interacted during this session with much enthusiasm and interest. PROMINENCE OF EDA TOOLS AND ITS APPLICATIONS IEEE Student Branch Department of ECE conducted a one day workshop on PROMINENCE OF EDA TOOLS AND ITS APPLICATIONS sponsored by IEEE MAS on 3 rd July 2015. Dr.PSS.Srinivasan, Principal, presided over the function and delivered the Presidential Address. Dr. K. VISAGAVEL Vice Principal, felicitated the gathering. Dr.N.Santhiyakumari, HOD/ECE welcomed the gathering. The Resource persons are Dr. N.Santhiyakumari, IEEE SB Counselor, Professor & Head / ECE, Prof.M.Shenbagapriya, IEEE SB Incharge, Assistant Professor / ECE, Prof. V.Saravanan, Associate Professor / ECE, Prof. P.Shanmuga Sundaram, Assistant Professor / ECE, Prof. K.RAJESH, Assistant Professor / ECE, Knowledge Institute of Technology, Salem. The following topics Introduction to EDA tools, Importance of EDA tools, EDA tools in Academics & Industries, Introduction to Analog & Digital Circuits, Semiconductor Technology Roadmap, Demo and Hands on training in FPGA Spartan 3E & Spartan 6, Demo and Hands on training in Mentor Graphics are explained. The resource persons discussed about the importance of EDA tool and how it is used to design and analyze the electronic systems. R.M.K.ENGINEERING COLLGE The IEEE Student Branch for the department of Electronics and Communication Engineering was inaugurated on 14/07/2015.The guest of honors were Mr.Vineet Sinha,Sr.General Manager of Technology,Jhonson Controls(I).Pvt.Ltd and Mr.Shyam Sundar, Sr.General Manager of Engineering,Jhonson Controls(I).Pvt.Ltd. The student members and the guest of honors were welcomed by Ms.Kalaivani.K, IEEE Student Chair. The presidential address was delivered by Dr. Elwin Chandra Monie, Principal. The IEEE benefits, activities and opportunities available to the Students for their Development was explained by Ms.Karmegaselvi.P, IEEE Society secretary. In the inaugural speech, guest of honors quoted the importance of innovation and briefed about the expectations of the industry from the young minds. The students were encouraged to join IEEE and motivated to participate in more contests in the upcoming future. Further the achievements done by the students in the previous year was recollected by Dr.Ramasamy S,Professor. The department HOD, Dr. R. Sivakumar felicitated the gathering by sharing his thoughts to his beloved students. In the event, students who won in Texas Instrument competition were awarded with certificates and smart watches. The vote of thanks for this glorious occasion was given by Ms.Menaka Priya, IEEE member. Reported by: Kalaivani K,IEEE Student Chair,ECE department KONGU ENGINEERING COLLEGE IEEE LEADERSHIP MEET REPORT IEEE SB - 29741 IEEE Leadership meet was a signature program of the society and was an opportunity for chapters to meet with other officers, members, faculty advisers, members of the MADRAS Section, and staffs. The Meet includes opportunities for professional development, leadership training, and networking. This event was open to all the IEEE student members of Madras Section. The event was an initiative to IEEE student Branches and members to participate in various technical and humanitarian activities and obtain leadership exposure while pursuing education. It was conducted on 5 th AUG 2015 by IEEE student Branch of Kongu engineering college, Perundurai. Staff Advisors, Student Branch officers, members and Students from various reputed institutions like M.Kumarasamy College of engineering, Vinayaka Mission Institutions, Sona Engineering College, Maharaja Institutions, National Engineering College, Knowledge Institute of Technology etc., were actively participated in this event. The function started with flying inauguration at 9:45 am with welcome address given by Ms.B.Preethi, Addition secretary, WIE. This was followed by chief guest address delivered by Dr. S.Arumugam, Editor, IEEE Newsletter, IEEE Madras section. He gave a motivational, informative and statistical talk on the scientific development, India has undergone. Then, the Presidential address was given by Prof.S.Kuppuswami, Principal and Branch Counsellor. His insipirational speech circled around the quality of leadership, volunteerism, and its importance. It was followed by an awesome Keynote session was given by Mr.Nivas Ravichandran, IEEE R10 ECIM Volunteer on "How to Make the Best Use Out Of Your Engineering Days?. should compulsorily know was provided by him. We were acknowledged with the best magazines, online Resources, a student must read. The best books were also listed out, we were asked to read any one of those. He gave valuable information and the qualities a leader should posses. He also referred us to watch some of the best movies on techie and science fiction. He also showed us a lot of informative videos collection as refreshment in his talks. He also shared his Volunteer experience and importance of being Volunteer. Then,session on Big Picture of IEEE for Leaders was given by Mr.Prasanth Mohan, chair, Students activities committee, IEEE Computer Society India Council. He gave a lot of unknown information about IEEE and related societies. He gave a clear vision on the different aspects of IEEE and the ways to effectively use the membership. Also, he notified various awards and Honours given by IEEE. He also summarised his volunteer experiences and its impacts on his carrer., Mr.Chelliah Ramachandran, Student Representative, IEEE Madras section given a valuable presentation on IEEE student Branch operation and Administration in that he summarised the Roles and Responsibilities of student Branch and their Officers. He gave a better picture about the various student branch activities and their impacts on student members. He also notifies the HUB Details, awards for student Branches and volunteer opportunities in IEEE Madras section. Mr.Nivas Ravichandran and Mr.Prasanth Mohan shared their volunteer opportunities and experience from their first day of IEEE onwards. Followed by, various technical and social activities conducted by IEEE Kongu Student branch were notified by Mr.C.Rajkumar, Chair, IEEE SB. Then, there was an Open forum Session where Participants were allowed to clarify their queries on IEEE and Leadership opportunities. Young Leaders were through questions on IEEE xtreme 9.0, how to conduct IEEE conferences, How to form IEEE SIGHT, volunteer opportunities in IEEE during and after graduation. Speakers passionately answered and clarified those questions and doubts clearly.then, feedbacks from participants were taken. Most of the students felt that meet was very useful, initiative and explored their minds about IEEE and they claimed that to form a communication link among the student Branches in Madras Section to share their activities and views. RANGANATHAN ENGINEERING COLLEGE RECENT TRENTS IN VIRTUAL INSTRUMENTATION USING LabVIEW A two day workshop was conducted by the Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering in association with IEEE student Branch on the topic RECENT TRENDS IN VIRTUAL INSTRUMENTATION USING Lab VIEW from 23-08-2012 to 24-08-2012. Totally 70 students participated in the workshop. The chief Guest Prof. JAYARAMAN, ICET Competency addressed the students and discussed about the concepts, importance and application of Virtual Instrumentation.He explained the difference between Engineering &Technology and software used in virtual Instrumentation. This includes the following three instructions Acquire, Analyze & Display. He also explained how the connections were done using a virtual Instrumentation in any automation systems. Mr.KAMALAKANNAN, Academic Trainer from National instruments, Bangalore taught the basic concepts in Lab VIEW software. He explained the components used in the input & output devices and also explained how to use it in a practical Application. He made the students to do Logical & Arithmetic programming using Lab VIEW and made the students to construct/develop our virtual Instruments by the end of the workshop. This programme was conducted to spread the concepts covered in IEEE Spectrum May issue. Dr.J. Jaya, Principal welcomed the gathering. Dr.K. Thanushkodi, Director delivered a special address. In his address, he explained the contents of IEEE Spectrum. He also explained the benefits of being an IEEE member. He added that there are other magazines like The Institute, GOLD rush etc. Totally 5 student members presented the contents of IEEE Spectrum May issue. Chinraj This was followed by the Membership development activity explaining the membership benefits to the students. This motivation is done by Mr.S. Madhavapandian, Assistant Professor, Department of EEE. The various membership benefits explained are participation in IEEE Xtreme competition, facility to download Microsoft products, awards and recognitions, Member-get-a-member scheme. The second year EEE students were motivated to join in IEEE membership. The programme was conducted in the august presence of Shri A. Nagarasan, Managing Trustee, Shri T. Prof.S.Elangovan, IEEE SB Counselor, addressed the gathering in which he highlighted the necessities of being an IEEE member. Dr.N.R.Alamelu, Chair-IEEE Madras section and Shri V.Karthikeyan, Project Manager, Pricol Technology Ltd. Coimbatore were the chief guest of the program. Dr.N.R.Alamelu inspired the students by her enlightening speech on benefits of IEEE. She also encouraged the students to carry out many innovative projects. WORKSHOP ON THE BENEFITS OF IEEE IEEE student branch conducted a Workshop on the BENEFITS OF IEEE headed by Prof.S.Elangovan, Students Branch Counselor on 22/6/2015. He Welcomede the gathering and introduced IEEE members. In his speech, he explained the advancement and benefits of the IEEE. He started with the general ideas about the IEEE and later the maximum befefits available. He informed about the upcoming events of the IEEE Madras section and the opportunities. He mentioned that Volunteerism, the key for the IEEE and it is the one by which the IEEE actively progressing. The students committee decided the date for the election for the posts of the IEEE student branch. The following decisions were taken by the members., Every Thursday declared as IEEE activity day. The Webinar s were planned. Any Advancement technology was decided to be shared and discussed. General discussion IEEE spectrum magazine was implemented. He further explained the support and assistance being extended by the IEEE Madras Section in organizing events in the SB, extending financial support for the student projects and participation in conferences if their papers were accepted for presentation. He had also suggested the IEEE SB Counselor and the SB Chairman to attend the SB Officers Meet being organized at the IEEE Madras Section during the 4 th week of Aug and get educated on their activity reporting formalities at Section and HQ. Mr. Mohan further advised the members to join in as many society chapters depending on their subject area of interest and get benefited in enhancing their career opportunities. He also suggested forming the Women In Engineering (WIE) affinity group and urged them to participate in the forthcoming WIE Leadership Summit being organized at the IEEE Madras Section in Sep 2015. Reported by: Dr.R.Thilepa, Professor/EEE, MEPCO SCHLENK ENGINEERING COLLEGE FESTRONIX FESTRONIX was conducted on July 16, 2015 by WIE team chairperson Ms. Nartana Lakshmi of CSE department. It was an exclusive event for girls of all departments. The aim of the event was to enhance general and technical knowledge of students and to test their aptitude skills. The event consisted of 3 rounds and the participants were split into 9 teams. First round was CRYPTOGRAPHY where students were given handout in which sentences were encoded with symbols. The team members had to decode the sentences by matching the symbols. The next round was QUIZ event where each team was asked technical questions from CSE, ECE and EEE streams. The final round was RAPID FIRE. Each team was asked questions from technical logos and slogans. Finally, winners and runners of the event were chosen. Those students were awarded by our IEEE student branch counselor Mr.C.Kalyanasundaram. He concluded the session by encouraging the students to participate and to involve in IEEE activities.
