SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED BY LOCAL INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS The Springfield Public Schools would like to express its appreciation for the generous scholarships provided for our graduates by local individuals and organizations. Some of these scholarships are listed below. Unless otherwise noted, the scholarship committee or the athletic scholarship committee at Jonathan Dayton High School selects recipients. It should be noted that changes might occur in these awards at the request of the sponsors. Local individuals and organizations that have confirmed their participation as scholarships for the Class of 2017 are listed below: Baltusrol Golf Club Scholarship Twelfth grade members of the golf team are given first consideration for this scholarship. Senior athletes who have contributed to Dayton s teams are then recognized. Scholarship and financial need is considered. Bertram Kaswiner Memorial Scholarship (One $400.00 Scholarship) An essay is required on why the student is interested in dentistry as a career. Applications are available in the Guidance Office and are due with essay by May 5. Selection is made by the organization. Brian M. McNany Memorial Scholarship Award (One $1000.00 Scholarship) An essay is required describing student s participation in JDHS sports AND/OR commitment to community service programs. Pick up application in Guidance for full details. Due May 6. Bulldog Gridiron Club Scholarship (One $500 Scholarship) An essay is required on what skills Jonathon Dayton Football has taught the student, which can be applied in life. Open to college bound seniors in good standing that have played on JD Football team for four years. Application, which includes essay, is due by May 6. Christopher James Phillips Scholarship (One $500.00 Scholarship) This award goes to a male going to nursing school, if not, then a first aid volunteer or in the medical profession, or active in theater at JDHS. Must be enrolled in higher education.
Susan V. Phillips Scholarship (One $500.00 Scholarship) This award goes to a female who is extremely active with volunteer work. Must be enrolled in higher education. Feintuch Family Memorial Scholarship This scholarship goes to a graduating student in good standing, who has financial need. Fredric Hecht Memorial Scholarship (One $200.00 Scholarship) An essay is required on why student wishes to pursue a career in healthcare. Applications are available in the Guidance Office and are due with essay by May 5. Selection is made by the organization. Gene and Louie Del Mauro Kind Heart Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to seniors based on an essays submitted describing their act of kindness. Applications are available in Guidance Office and are due with essay by May 5. Selection made by the organization. Jonathan Dayton Faculty Scholarship The Jonathan Dayton High School Faculty Scholarship is given to a student who has contributed greatly to the school. School service is a major factor in determining the recipient, and character and leadership are also considered. Faculty donations fund the scholarship and so the amount of the award varies from year to year. Jonathan Dayton Heart of Dayton Principal s Service and School Spirit Award Service to school, and working towards betterment of school community. Jonathan Dayton High School Memorial Scholarship for Humanities Given to a student who exhibits excellence in the humanities. Jonathan Dayton PTSO Scholarships (Ten $500 Scholarships)
The student s parent must be active on all PTSO committees over the past years. Selection is made by the organization. Joe Pepe III Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to one male and one female student who plays basketball. Jordan Lee Fish Foundation Scholarship (Two $200 Scholarships) This scholarship includes School Spirit Awards which include the following criteria: the student must show the same spirit Jordan did through many activities in school, and be involved in working for the foundation in some meaningful way. Also, this scholarship includes Music/Musical Theatre Awards that include the following criteria: the student must show strong interest in, be seriously involved in and may pursue these interests in college. Selections are made by the organization. Kearny Federal Savings Charitable Foundation Scholarship (One $1000.00 Scholarship) The recipient of this scholarship will be a solid academic student who needs financial assistance to continue his/her education. Larry Levee Memorial Scholarship (Two $500.00 Scholarships) This scholarship is awarded to one male and one female twelfth grade varsity athlete who is a determined competitor. In addition, the student must be a leader who demonstrates a positive influence on their teammates, is respectful to all, and possesses a never quit attitude. Lee Adler Memorial Scholarship (Two $1000.00 Scholarships) Students who exhibit academic excellence in math, sciences or computer science are considered for this scholarship. Outstanding community service is also a requirement. Lion s Club of Springfield Memorial Scholarship of Excellence (Six $1000 Scholarships) The memorial scholarships awarded include the Walter A. Hohn Scholarship for excellence in science, the Bunnell Brothers Scholarship for excellence in business studies,
the William Hummel Scholarship for technical/vocational excellence, and the James Duguid Scholarship for excellence in volunteerism. Michael D Sole Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is given to male and female twelfth grade students, who have studied at least two years of Italian, and who have exemplified the following qualities: likes to help others, are always cordial and smiling, loved by students and faculty, love to come to school, and have, as Michael did, contributed to make Jonathan Dayton a better place. Selections are made by the organization. Natalie Waldt Memorial Scholarship (One $500.00 Scholarship) Students who offer exceptional service to Jonathan Dayton High School will be selected for this scholarship. National Honor Society Scholarship This scholarship will be offered to a National Honor Society Member in good standing, with high ranking, who performs extraordinary service as NHS tutor. New Jersey Blood Services High School Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to a senior who demonstrates leadership and community service in the organization of this high school s blood drives. Phillip D. & Victoria Torrisi Memorial Scholarship (Two $500.00 Scholarships) Students pursuing a career in the medical field will be considered for this scholarship. Soccer Club of Springfield Scholar Athlete One male and one female student member of the high school soccer team who has maintained a 3.0 or above GPA during twelfth grade will be considered. The prospective recipient must have plans to pursue higher education, and a verification form needs to be completed. Springfield Basketball Association (Two $1000 Scholarships)
This scholarship is awarded to a boy and a girl who has played Varsity Basketball for at least two years, is very involved in school and community, and has maintained a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Springfield Education Foundation Leadership Scholarship One male and one female twelfth grade student who exemplify superior leadership qualities is considered for this scholarship. Springfield Girls Softball Parents Organization A twelfth grade student who is a girls softball player and has been a member of the Springfield Recreation Softball team, maintains a 3.0 or better GPA, and has plans to pursue higher education is considered for this scholarship. Springfield Junior Baseball League Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to a senior who has played for four years on the Springfield Junior Baseball League recreation program. Springfield Mayor s Day at Baltusrol Twelfth grade members of the golf team are given first consideration for this scholarship. Senior athletes who have contributed to Dayton s teams are then recognized. Scholarship and financial need is considered. Springfield Patriot Chamber of Commerce Students who possess superior business and civic-minded qualities are considered for this scholarship. Preference is given to students whose efforts in some way made Springfield a better place to live. Springfield Policemen s Benevolent Association A student showing interest in criminal justice or law enforcement is given first consideration. If no qualified student is interested in these fields, a student who is a pre-law major is then recognized. Springfield Rotary Scholarship (5 $500.00 Scholarships)
This organization selects one student to receive the Dr. Serson Scholarship, two students are selected who excel in community service, three students are selected who are pursuing a career in the field of nursing or a related healthcare field, three students are selected who are interested in a vocational career, and one student is selected for an unnamed area. Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael Women s League Scholarship The highest academic achievement of one student of the Jewish religion is considered for this scholarship. Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael Men s Club Award Twelfth grade students who have taken Holocaust and Genocide class are eligible to participate and compete in an essay contest. Selection is made by the organization. The Joe Paternostro Memorial Scholarship (Two $500.00 Scholarships) One male and one female student who has maintained a strong soccer record, with a minimum of two years on the JDHS soccer team. Students must have also maintained a B average or higher, show outstanding character, integrity and leadership.
