COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Apply both leadership and followership skills necessary of Air Force officers. This will be assessed by briefings and ability to complete assigned tasks. 2. Apply proper dress and appearance standards, as well as military customs and courtesies. This will be assessed by conduct in the classroom and, for active cadets, through wear of the uniform. 3. Demonstrate competency in team building skills as well as interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills expected of Air Force officers. This will be assessed by briefings and ability to complete assigned tasks. 1. ATTENDANCE POLICY a. Instructors may consider class attendance in determining a student's final grade in AS classes, but attendance must be subordinate to measurable performance based on lesson objectives. However, in cases where student attendance falls below 80 percent, attendance becomes the main determinant in the student s final grade and the student receives a failing grade for the class. b. You must notify the instructor as soon as you realize you will be absent or late to any mandatory event. i) You must complete an In-Turn Memorandum for any absence or tardy no later than 1700 on Friday following the absence with justification explaining why you were late or missed the class. It is at the instructor s discretion to deem the absence/tardy excused. ii) Failure to submit the memorandum by the appointed time mentioned above will result in an unexcused absence/tardy. c. Whether your absence is excused or not, you are still required to make up the objectives. d. Attending less than 80% of scheduled classes will result in a failing grade for the course regardless of your total number of points. For LLAB, if you attend at least 80% of LLAB courses, but less than 80% of PT sessions, you will fail LLAB. Likewise, if you attend at least 80% of PT sessions, but less than 80% of LLAB classes, you will also fail LLAB. You must attend a minimum of 80% of both LLAB and PT in order to pass LLAB. e. Certain events are required for all cadets to attend and may be held outside the times published for LLAB. These events are approved by the Detachment Commander and are reasonable and justifiable. The following events are MANDATORY for all cadets: Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA): All cadets must attempt the PFA once per semester. The Cadet Wing Commander determines date and time. Physical Training (PT): Cadets must attend PT a minimum of twice per week (three times per week for those with low mock/official PFA scores, as determined by the Cadet Physical Fitness Officer.) Professional Officer Course (POC) Call (The 6 th Hour): Mandatory for POC cadets to discuss leadership topics immediately following LLAB (as needed). Drill Meet: Det 847 hosts this major JROTC competition for schools throughout Texas. Date and time to be determined. Dining Out Award Banquet (DOAB): Det 847 s formal dining event which includes the annual award ceremony. Date and time to be determined.
Holiday Party: Det 847 s culminating esprit de corps event during the fall semester. Date and time to be determined. Veteran s Day Parade: Parade in the month of November sponsored by the city of San Angelo honoring past, present, and future veterans. Date and time to be determined. Homecoming Parade: Det 847 leads this parade during the fall semester which is organized by the head of student organizations at Angelo State University. Date and time to be determined. f. LLAB will meet during Dead Week but not during Finals Week or Spring Break. 2. PHYSICAL FITNESS: PT is part of your LLAB grade. Good physical fitness in the Air Force equates to readiness. To ensure you meet the demands for active duty, you must meet AFROTC physical fitness standards. NOTE: Every cadet must have a current sports physical on file before he/she is able to participate in PT. Mandatory requirements: - Complete a physical fitness questionnaire 7-30 days prior to taking the PFA, and have height, weight, and abdominal measurement completed by cadre within 72 hours of the PFA. - Cadets who do not accomplish these requirements are not allowed to test. - Contracted cadets must meet AFROTC PFA standards each semester. Contracted cadets who fail to meet AFROTC PFA standards will be issued a conditional event. (CEs will not be awarded to 4 year HSSP cadets in the fall semester unless still failing as of 31 Dec). - Non-contract cadets selected for Leadership Evaluation And Development (LEAD) must meet AFROTC standards on the PFA prior to LEAD selection. All other non-contract cadets must attempt the PFA each semester. - If non-contract cadets do not attempt the PFA during the scheduled time without prior approval from the Operations Officer, they receive a failing grade for LLAB. 3. CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR a. You will be professional, courteous, and respectful at all times to include your behavior in the classroom. b. Classroom opening and closing procedures exist to instill discipline and serve as a reminder that this is a military training environment; they are described below: i) When the military instructor enters the classroom at the beginning of class, the senior ranking/designated cadet will call the room to attention. Remain at attention until told otherwise by the instructor. ii) At the end of class, when the instructor has indicated the lesson has concluded, the senior ranking/designated cadet will ask, Will that be all, sir/ma am? Once the instructor answers in the affirmative, the senior ranking/designated cadet calls the room to attention. When the instructor declares Dismissed, the cadets are free to leave or ask questions. If the instructor exits the classroom while cadets are still in the room, do not call the room back to attention. c. Water is allowed in the classroom or at the track. Ensure you discard your garbage and leave the area as you found it. d. Cadets will wear the proper uniform of the day to their AS class, Physical training and all day on Wednesdays. For academic-only students, wear appropriate attire for the specific class. See your instructor for further guidance. Cadets who fail to wear the proper uniform, wear the
uniform incorrectly, or fail to be in grooming standards IAW AFI 36-2903 will be issued a Form 16 Conditional Event for Indifference to Training. 4. ACADEMIC FREEDOM and NON-ATTRIBUTION: Students are encouraged to write freely and to voice their concerns and opinions in the classroom; however, the military training environment requires limits on some types of expression. The UCMJ dictates that officer trainees and cadets may not use contemptuous words toward the President, Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of the Air Force, and others. The classroom is also a nonattribution environment statements, disagreements, and other comments made by individuals or groups in an educational forum are safeguarded through non-attribution. A speaker s identity may not be divulged for the purpose of attributing specific remarks or statements to that speaker, without first obtaining the speaker s permission. If this is not clear in any way, please ask your AS instructor to clarify. 5. UNIVERSITY POLICY ON ACADEMIC HONESTY: Angelo State University expects all students to engage in all academic pursuits in a manner that is above reproach and to maintain complete honesty and integrity in the academic experiences both in and out of the classroom. Additional information can be found the Student Handbook. 6. ACCOMMODATION FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: The University is committed to the principle that in no aspect of its programs shall there be difference in the treatment of persons because of race, creed, national origin, age, sex, disability and the equal opportunity and access to facilities shall be available to all. Additional information can be found the Student Handbook. 7. OBSERVANCE OF A RELIGIOUS HOLY DAY: A student who intends to observe a religious holy day should make that intention known in writing to the instructor prior to the absence. A student who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence. A student who is excused under this policy may not be penalized for the absence; however, the instructor may respond appropriately if the student fails to complete the assignment satisfactorily. 8. INDIFFERENCE TO MILITARY TRAINING: Cadets must demonstrate the ability to meet military retention standards, in accordance with AFROTCI 36-2011 (para 11.4.2.5 and para 11.1.3 are two such examples within this Operating Instruction). Cadets having problems with attitude or adjustment to military standards will receive a Form 16 counseling by the Operations Officer. The severity of the infraction(s) and frequency of Form 16 counselling s may be grounds for dismissal from ROTC (as determined by Det/CC). Military training includes, but is not limited to: 1. GMC: Open Ranks Inspection results, marching, Leadership Emulation and Development preparation, leadership, followership and participation. 2. POC: communication skills, meeting objectives, meeting suspenses, effective delegation, leadership effort and job continuity. 3. All Cadets: warrior knowledge, dress and personal appearance, i.e. meeting uniform and grooming standards, and performance of assigned corps duties.
9. GRADING AND EVALUATION PROCEDURES a. Cadets must attend at least 80% of all mandatory LLAB activities and attempt the PFA in order to receive an A in the course. Cadets attending less than 80% of activities (to include PT sessions) and failing to attempt the PFA will receive an F. Objective Title Page - Preface
