A science driven approach - Biotechnology, Agriculture... Biomedicine BIOMED2 : The 4th FP * Pharmaceutical research, human genome * Research on biomedical technology & engineering * Occupational & environmental health, public health * Brain, ageing, rare diseases, cancer * Demonstration projects Previous programmes mainly supported co-ordination of research - now participation in cost sharing research
The 5th FP Now addressing explicitly formulated economic and social objectives of a European nature with a problem-solving approach. How? Through selected issues & anticipated deliverables ==>> Key Actions, complemented by Generic Activities & Infrastructures
FP5 Public Health In Key Action 6 (Ageing): socio-economic and health & social care research but also under Generic Activities: Chronic and degenerative diseases, Cancer, diabetes, CVD, and rare diseases; Research into genomes & diseases of genetic origin; Neurosciences; Public health research (including drugs); Research relating to disabled people; Bioethics; Socio-economic evaluation of life sciences
Ageing Key Action Achievements Increased co-operation, networking and knowledge sharing leading to greater prioritisation, more collaborative research ventures between different disciplines leading to a more effective translation of European research outputs into practice Improved public awareness of ageing research and its importance (many projects included older people or their organisations and held conferences or workshops) The holistic approach to research, emphasising cooperation and knowledge transfer, including the involvement of all stakeholders has lead to both improvements in the quality of life of older people and in the quality and efficiency of the services they use
SOME FP5 PROJECTS NEXT Sustaining working ability in the nursing profession - investigation of premature departure from work EUROFAMCARE Services for supporting family carers of elderly people in Europe: characteristics, coverage & usage CARMEN The care and management of services for older people in Europe network COSIP Mental health prevention in a target group at risk: children of somatically ill parents OSCAR Occupational stress with mental health clients in acute response Impact of two alternative staff training programmes on the implementation and effectiveness of a psycho-educational intervention for families of patients with schizophrenia Future elderly living conditions in Europe

Objectives: HEALTH THEME COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH Improving the health of European citizens Increasing the competitiveness of European health-related industries and businesses Addressing global health issues including emerging epidemics Strategic issues of child health and the ageing population to be addressed across activities
HEALTH THEME COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH Activities 3 Pillars & International Co-operation Biotechnology, generic tools & technologies for human health Translating research for human health Optimising the delivery of health care to European citizens International Co-operation
NEED FOR HEALTH SERVICES & OUTCOME RESEARCH Such research - important for delivery Europe with its different health care systems serves as an excellent platform to allow comparison Data that reflect real world clinical practices and outcomes (as opposed to clinical trial conditions) - the final mile to the patient Impact of interventions on "final" endpoints - stakeholders - that matter to decision makers: patients, providers, professionals, government agencies, society at large Importance for EU: diversity of health systems, cultural and professional environments influences outcome
HEALTH THEME COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH Third Pillar: Optimising the delivery of health care to European citizens Enhanced health promotion and disease prevention Translating clinical research into clinical practice Quality, solidarity and sustainability of health systems
Enhanced Health Promotion & Disease Prevention Evidence for best public health measures in terms of life style interventions Focus on the wider determinants of health and how they interact at the individual and community level Diet, stress, tobacco, physical activity, nutrition, inequalities Mental health to be addressed in life-course perspective
Translating Clinical Research into Clinical Practice Better use of medicines, behavioural and organisational interventions, health technologies; focus on patient safety: to identify the best clinical practice to understand decision making in clinical setting in primary and specialised care to foster evidence-based medicine and patient empowerment
Quality, Solidarity and Sustainability of Health Systems Basis for countries to adapt their health systems taking into account national contexts and population characteristics Organizational, financial and regulatory aspects Implementation best practice Outcomes - effectiveness, efficiency and equity Special attention on investment issues and human resources
SOME INDICATIVE CALL TOPICS Effect of public health interventions on different population segments of the population; policy options to address health inequalities Improving the coverage of recommended vaccinations in the target population Implementation of clinical guidelines in different health care settings Impact of self-medication on patient safety in the primary care setting Factors influencing prescription of medicines and compliance of their use
SOME INDICATIVE CALL TOPICS Clinical care at the primary care/hospital interface and its effect on quality Sustainable impact of tools and education for selfmanagement of chronic diseases Effect of population-based disease management programmes on cost, quality, outcomes Health care human resource planning for nursing Mobility of health professionals to, from, and within the European Union Patient Safety: Research network & impact of working time Directive
Scoping studies are likely to include topics on: Disease networks of centres of reference Effectiveness of health investments Patient mobility and access to information Brokering research into policy European classification of health services Challenges to the delivery of health care A road map for ageing research SOME INDICATIVE CALL TOPICS Conferences may be supported in areas such as: Health services research Mental health research Public health intervention research
HEALTH THEME COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH International Cooperation & Health Systems Research Indicative call topics Epidemiological investigations into long-term trends of population health as a consequence of socio-economic transitions, including lifestyle induced problems Target Regions: Mediterranean Partner Countries, Russia, Eastern Europe & Central Asia Universal and equitable access to health care and health financing Target Regions: Asia & Latin America Health care intervention research optimising hospital care Target Region: Western Balkans Health care intervention research improving pre-natal & maternal care Target Regions: ACP & Mediterranean Partner Countries
