Purpose, Target Audience This conference is designed for all health care professionals who participate in the care and management of sick children and neonates. A case based format will be used to review and discuss the etiology, diagnosis, and management of critically ill infants and children. Objectives Upon completion of this conference, participants should be able to: Discuss the current rationale for the component and rate of intravenous fluid given to pediatric inpatients. Describe the diagnosis and subsequent management of common neurologic issues in the pediatric inpatient population. Present the current evidence and rationale for vaccinating pediatric patients, and addressing those arguments against vaccination. Review evidence-based pediatric emergency medicine as it relates to subsequent inpatient care. Discuss pediatric inpatient care in a third world setting, including the unique challenges and barriers in this domain. Explain the value of diagnostic imaging in diagnosing and subsequently managing common and vexing conditions in the inpatient pediatric population. Discuss the various differential(s) when common presenting symptoms lead to diagnosis of uncommon conditions in the inpatient pediatric setting.
