From the Principal s Desk Dear Readers, Welcome to the 11 th issue of. This issue has endeavoured to cover details of KMC Day which is a special day for all KMCians. I would like to thank all the dignitaries and our guests who shared their valuable time with us on this special day. We were honored and encouraged to contribute further in medical education. I would also like to thank the KMC Day Celebration Committee led by Prof. Sunil Kumar Joshi for successfully organising KMC Day in a grand manner. This issue has also highlighted other important activities taking place in the college besides the routine teaching learning activities. Continued medical education activities, training and other academic workshops, mortality-morbidity review meetings and publications of journal, newsletter, annual report, departmental protocols etc are some of the regular events of our faculties and departments. Teachers training for 14th group of faculty at KMC was also successfully accomplished. Faculties and departments deserve special thanks for this kind of devotion and dedication. It will be praiseworthy if maximum number of students, residents and faculties participate in such activities and get benefi tted. KMC always considers its students, patients and clients as its prime stakeholders. KMC has already produced about 1265 quality doctors, 167 quality nurses, 102 specialist doctors and 7 M.Sc. graduates. KMC has also produced about 209 MBBS doctors and 10 B.Sc. nurses under Nepal Government s Scholarship Scheme. KMC management is continuously trying hard to uplift the learning environment for our students and to improve the health care services to our patients and clients through its highly qualifi ed and dedicated faculties and staff. We have been interacting with different level of faculties, staff and other employees to improve our services. In the context of Nepal Governments decision, we have also been working on the strategies to sustain ourselves. KMC Board and its management committee are continuously guiding the management towards this end. KMC Day Celebrated Association, Dr. Santosh Man Rajbhandari, President of Nepal Dental Association, Dr. Tara Pokharel, President of Nursing Association of Nepal (also Ex officio Member, Nepal Nursing Council) were also present during the formal celebration of KMC Day. KMC Day which holds especial significance to faculty, staff, students and well wishers of KMC was held on 1st May 2017 (18th Baisakh 2074) at Nepal Academy Hall, Kamladi, Kathmandu. High level authorities from Kathmandu University, Nepal Medical Council, Nepal Nursing Council, Nepal Health Research Council, Nepal Medical Association, Nepal Dental Association, and Nursing Association of Nepal joined KMC staff and students in making the KMC Day a grand success. Likewise, Board of Directors and the Advisory Committee of the Kathmandu Medical College Public Limited along with senior faculty and staff members attended the KMC Day celebration programme with enthusiasm. The programme was chaired by Mr. Rabendra Raj Pandey, Chairman of the Kathmandu Medical College Public Limited. Prof. Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha, Vice Chancellor of Kathmandu University and Prof. Dr. Dharma Kant Banskota, Chairman of Nepal Medical Council were the Chief and Special Guests of the programme respectively. Other invited guests from Kathmandu University who attended our ceremony were Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa, Registrar; Prof. Dr. Panna Thapa, Controller of Examination; Dr. Narendra Bahadur Rana, Dean, School of Medical Sciences; and Prof. Dr. Rajendra Koju, Associate Dean, School of Medical Sciences. The programme was celebrated by rewarding faculties and staff members who made especial contribution to KMC and by rewarding top performing students in various disciplines. The KMC Day main event was preceeded by a series of programmes which included Blood Donation Programme, Tree Plantation, Sports Week, Health Camp as well as various other activities. The event was organized by a main organizing committee headed by Prof. Dr. Sunil Kumar Joshi with Mr. Prakash Kumar Bhattarai as the Deputy Coordinator, Mrs. Bandana Pandey and Mr. Bijay Sharma as the Member Secretaries.Various 3

Discussion was focused on activities of Medical Education Department, participation in the upcoming conference of AHPEN, CPD unit and organizing Teacher Training Workshop as the national level in the future. Training Committee 14 th Teachers Training (7 th -12 th May 2017) Signing of agreement between KMC and Tohuku University Japan Signing of agreement on behalf of Orthopaedic Department KMC, done by Prof. Dr. Shishir Lakhey and Prof. Kiran Rijal with counterpart of Tohuku Univeristy on 26 th May 2017 for faculty and student exchange and combined research programme. "Organophosphorus poisoning" on 5th by Department of Medicine. 2. "Fever under evaluation" on 22nd by Department of Medicine. Mortality Review committee is actively organising and participating to disseminate general awareness regarding medicolegal issues through MRC meetings and interactions amongst the healthcare professionals of KMC. Two cases which has been discussed are as follows: Continuing Medical Education (CME) 1. Nutrition in neurosurgical patients On the eve of the longest day of the year i.e. 21st June 2017, the Department of Neurological Surgery, KMCTH conducted a CME on Nutrition in neurosurgical patients. After the topic was introduced by Dr. Amit Thapa, Dr. Bidur KC and Dr Bikram Shakya spoke on how to calculate and how to deliver the nutritional requirements in neurosurgical scenario. The topics were well received by around 35 participants from various hospitals in Nepal. 2. How to enjoy becoming doctor? Rotaract Club of Kathmandu Medical College with Rotaract Club of Dillibazar Kathmandu successfully organized "Talk Program with Dr. Bharat Rawat" with the theme "How to enjoy becoming a Doctor" at Kathmandu Medical College on April 12, 2017. Dr. Bharat Rawat is senior interventional cardiologist, born in India and had been serving Nepal and Nepali patients since decades. Almost 250 attendees comprising of faculty members, doctors, staff and students were present. The programme was held as a part of CME programme by Medical Education Department of Kathmandu Medical College. 3. Lifestyle management through ancient eastern knowledge CME on Lifestyle management through ancient eastern knowledge by Guruji Sri Yogacharya Arun Kumar was held on 19th May 2017. The CME was participated by faculty members, staff and students. 4. Understanding fluids available for infusion Department of Surgery conducted a CME on Understanding fluids available for infusion on 23rd Friday. The topic was presented by Prof. S.N. Mishra, Department of Surgery, Principal, Nepalgunj Medical College. 5. 6 Breaking Bad News Lecturer Ms. Sumitra Sharma, from Department of B.Sc. Nursing, presented on Breaking Bad News as a part of CME program in 16th June, 2017. It was a much needed and good presentation with around fifty participants including faculties, clinical staff, interns as well as students. Ideas were exchanged on how bad news should actually be delivered and how it is done in our clinical settings. Different protocols like SPIKES, BREAKS, NURSE etc. were discussed that could help health care professionals in breaking bad news. It was discussed and recommended from the floor that provision could be made in the hospital to follow specific standard guidelines to deliver the bad news.

Global Health and Global Health Nursing A CME on Global Health and Global Health Nursing was conducted on 7th May, 2017 by guest lecturer, Ms. Barbara Waldorf from Boston University School of Public Health. With 25 years of domestic and international experiences in pediatric and psychiatric nursing and non-profit management, Barbara is a founding member and former executive director of Global Nursing Caucus, a collaborative agency to advance the role of nursing in global health policy, practice and education through advocacy and engagement. Lecturer Sumitra Sharma from department of B.Sc. Nursing, who was previously involved with Global Nursing Caucus in the process of publication of an article, invited Barbara for this talk program on global health. Global health nursing is an emerging subject area and was an exciting topic for most of the participants. The topic dealt with the importance of global health, sustainable development goals, global health issues, global health strategies, key global health organizations, global health initiatives, global health nursing as a new paradigm and elements of global health nursing. Sinamangal Hospital Update Refresher course on Mother and child. Adverse reactions The Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care organized a two day refresher course on Mother and child. Adverse reactions on May 26 and 27, 2017 based on the course designed by the Committee for European Education in Anaesthesiology (CEEA). The programme was officially inaugurated by Vice Principal Dr. Sabina Bhattarai along with Prof. BM Shrestha, HOD of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care. Participants and the resource persons of the refresher course There were a total of 32 participants from different hospitals with residents from Anaesthesia, Gynaecology and Obstetrics and Paediatrics. Several renowned anaesthesiologists from different hospitals participated as resource persons. The participants and the resource persons both were awarded with Nepal Medical Association Educational Credits for the two day course. This was granted 13 NMA credits by the Nepal Medical Association. Presenters will be given an extra credit for each hour of lecture. Participants during anaesthesia refresher course 7

Bar Code system introduced at Department of Pathology, KMC European Respiratory Society Workshop held at Department of Internal Medicine, KMC Bar code installation in Pathology Department Department of Internal Medicine, Unit of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine conducted an extensive workshop on pulmonary function test and spirometry. This course was conducted as a part of European Spirometry Driving License under European Respiratory Society. European Spirometry Driving License is conducted once in two years in Nepal. Candidates participating are usually subjected to rigorous theoretical examination in part I and practical examination is part II. This workshop, conducted on April 10th, was a part I pre-examination workshop. There were 20 participants from KMCTH, NGMC, IOM, TUTH and NMCTH. All KMC candidates passed Part I examination on designated date. Bar code system was introduced at Department of Pathology, KMCTH Sinamangal. The system was inaugurated by KMC Chairman, R.R Pandey on 30th April 2017. The introduction of bar code system would decrease the waiting time as well as reduce any potential errors while taking important samples of patients and processing of samples. Duwakot Update Tree plantation programme The faculties who were involved in the workshop were as follows: Tree plantation programme was held on the eve of 18th KMC Day with plantation of trees by Prof. Dr. Chanda Karki, Prof. Dr. Hemang Dixit, Prof. Dr. Kiran Rijal, Prof. Dr. Sunil Kumar Joshi, with Dr. B.K. Malla within the premises of KMC Duwakot on 28th April 2017. Foreign faculty a. Prof. Dr. Brendan Cooper b. Dr. Arne Drews c. Mrs. Julie Cooper d. Mrs. Silke Drews National Faculty a. Prof. Dr. Arpana Neopane b. Asst. Prof. Dr. Sanjeet Krishna Shrestha Nursing Update Community Service The students of B.Sc. Nursing 2nd year went to Bungmati, Lalitpur for 8 weeks from 1st Falgun to 30th Chaitra 2073. The major activities included community field works, school health program and posting in Bungamati health post. The students performed regular home visits, conducted survey focusing on maternal and child health, and provided multiple health teachings. One week of school health program was conducted in Triratna Secondary School and Divya Jyoti Secondary School. The students conducted classes on health related topics. At the end of the school health program, health awareness activities were conducted for the school children through drama, exhibition, puppet show and fannel graphs. 8

In the health post, students performed antenatal examinations, immunizations, distributed free supply of drugs through health post and gave counseling on nutritious diet. Students also participated in the elephantiasis campaign to distribute medicines to the locals along with the health post staff. Students presented the findings of their survey to the local authorities and inhabitants in the last week of the posting. In the end a grand exhibition was organized for the local people with health exhibition, drama, cultural program as alternative ways of conveying health awareness message to the community. In-service Education to Clinical Staff main presenters of the program. The program was graced by Nursing Director, Matron, Assistant Matron, Nursing faculty and Nursing in-charges along with the clinical staff from various wards of KMC. Regular in-service education like these will help to refresh the knowledge of the clinical staff to help them in their practice. The students of BSc Nursing 4th year, 9th batch, conducted an in-service education for the clinical staff on 13th June, 2017, as per the requirement of leadership and management practicum. The in-service education were given on the topic "Prevention of Hospital Acquired Infections" in the Medicine ward and "Tracheostomy care" in the Surgery ward. Ms. Nikita Aryal, Ms. Saina Maharjan and Ms. Susmita Bogati were the K.U Inspection The annual inspection of Kathmandu University was carried out in KMC on 22nd and 23rd of June, 2017. The inspection team consisted of Ms. Radha Acharya and Ms. Bhawana Shrestha. BDS Program Update VITALITY FEST DENTAL MELA KMC- Dental College and Hospital organized Vitality Fest, a Dental Education Fair on 11th Chaitra 2073. The Fair was inaugurated by the Principal, Prof Dr. Chanda Karki. BDS students from first to final years participated in dental educational skits and also presented with varieties of dental educational games, posters, and dental awareness models. The main objective of the fair was to create an awareness of Dental and Oral Health to the students and the people of the communities of Duwakot and Bhaktapur. Invitations were sent to different communities, schools and youth clubs in Duwakot and Bhaktapur, and the participation in the festival was quite substantial. All BDS students were divided into 4 groups and each of these groups participated in Skits, Games, Education and Awareness demonstrations. also enjoyed the highly entertaining educational program. Since the fair was very successful the Dental College has plans to conduct similar fairs every year as it benefits the community, school children and also the students and staff of KMC. The students also made varieties of delicious food which they sold from their food stalls. The best group was later awarded with a cash prize of Rs 25,000. The dental fair was very successful in creating oral health awareness especially for the children of Duwakot. The students, staff and faculty members Dental Conferences Dr. Dilesh Pradhan and Dr. Lajana Shrestha, Lecturer, Department of Prosthodontics and Maxillofacial Prosthetics, attended a three-day International Conference on Maxillofacial Prosthetics that was held at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi during March 23-25, 2017. This was an outreach programme and workshop held by the Foundation for Oral and Facial Rehabilitation (FFOFR) headed by the pioneer in maxillofacial prosthetics Dr. John Beumer and his team. Dr. Vivek Bikram Thapa, Dr. Amrita Shrestha and Dr. Prabesh Sherchan, Lecturer, Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, attended 2nd South Asia International Orthodontic Congress & 7th ODOAN Orthodontic Conference held at Kathmandu, Nepal on 16th - 17th May 2017. Dr. Vivek Bikram Thapa was coordinator for the scientific committee and Dr. Prabesh Sherchan was coordinator for event venue management. Students were throughly examined for oro-dental problems and were if necessary, advised for the needed dental procedure. Oral Health Day and Poster Presentation World Oral Health Day is celebrated every year on 20th March. The theme for this year was Live Mouth Smart. Faculties and students from Kathmandu Medical College Dental College and Hospital participated in awareness and cultural program organized by Nepal Dental Association at Army Officers Club, Kathmandu and also took part in Oral Health Awareness march with banners and posters. Posters presented by Dr. Priyanka Singh Rathor, Dr. Mohnisha Shahi and Dr. Mohit Sharma stood 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. KMC faculty and students during Oral Health Day 2017 Other News AHPEN Conference to be held in Kathmandu The Association of Health Professional Educationists of Nepal (AHPEN) was officially established on 28th April 2017. Prof. Dr. Shekhar Babu Rizyal from Nepal Medical College was elected as President. Prof. Dr. Mamta Lakhey and Dr. Abhinav Vaidya from KMC are in the executive committee. The first Conference on Medical Education is being held from 25th -27th November 2017 in Kathmandu. KMC dermatologists and students participation on World Skin Health Day On the occasion of the World Skin Health Day, the Society of Dermatologist, Venereologist and Leprologist of Nepal (SODVELON) organized a skin rally on the 1st of April, 2017 (Chaitra 19, 2074). The day also commemorated the completion of 25 glorious years of the society. With the theme Love your skin and be healthy, the rally displayed various slogans on skin and hair care along with public awareness messages. The Department of Dermatology of KMC along with students from KMC participated and made the programme a huge success. Visitors Dr. Sujan Heydon from the University of Otago, New Zealand visited KMC at Sinamangal and Duwakot on 16th May 2017. Library director Ms. Janet Wamby and Ms. Karin Lumelberg from the University of Skovde, Sweden visited KMC on 20th.
