LEARN LIVE LOVE

Greetings from Oakland City University! I am excited that you want to learn more about OCU. This viewbook hopes to introduce you to our campus, programs and people. I hope you will take the time to investigate and discover the educational, spiritual, and social opportunities available at Oakland City University. As President of Oakland City University, I want to share with you three commitments we make to our students. Welcome to Oakland City University! Ever wonder why so many universities ask you to choose between scholarly knowledge and scriptural truth? At Oakland City University we know your world view is more complex. Here you will enter to learn. Here you will integrate truth and knowledge. And here you will discover opportunities to make a difference in the lives of those you love, in your community, and in the world. We invite you to imagine yourself at Oakland City. First, we are committed to providing academic excellence. As an institution of higher learning, the essence of who we are is in the quality of education we deliver. Oakland City University seeks the highest-qualified professors who are leaders in their fields to teach our courses. To further demonstrate the quality of our academic offerings, Oakland City University continuously assesses our course offerings and obtains the most outstanding accreditations available. Secondly, Oakland City University is committed to the spiritual formation of our students. Founded by the General Association of General Baptists in 1885, the University s roots are enriched and wellgrounded in Christianity. We provide students with an environment conducive to spiritual growth and a support system which encourages students to live a life of Christian service in their chosen careers. Oakland City graduates are serving the world in a great variety of missional vocations. Additionally, Oakland City University provides the practical experiences necessary for our graduates to be successful in the world of work. These practical experiences are provided through internships, mentoring programs, career counseling and onsite field experiences. Our students graduate with the knowledge, skills, and ethics to make a difference in the world. If there is any additional information you need or if you would like to speak with a campus representative about how Oakland City University can be a part of your future, please contact us at 800-737-5125. We want to help you achieve your educational goals. Ray G. Barber, President Oakland City University

Aim Higher at OCU Quick Facts Our mission statement: Oakland City University is a Christian faith-based learning community dedicated to the enhancement of intellectual, spiritual, physical and social development for positive leadership. Founded by the General Association of General Baptists in 1885, the University s roots are enriched and well-grounded in Christianity. OCU students live and learn in an environment conducive to spiritual growth. Since 1992, more than 200 student athletes have been named Academic All-Americans and more than 50 First and Second Team On Floor/ Field/Court All-Americans have been selected. Oakland City University continues to demonstrate leadership in the field of correctional education, as evidenced by our presence at the 71st Correctional Education Association (CEA) International Conference and Training Event held in Long Beach, California in 2016. Independent Colleges of Indiana: Oakland City University takes a different approach to higher education. At OCU, each student is treated as an individual, and bold, imaginative teaching and personal interaction between students and faculty remain fundamental objectives of the university. OCU considers the potential and personal goals of each student a top priority. Ours is a relational campus home to less than 1,000 FT undergraduates. U.S. News and World Report ranks OCU #33 among regional colleges in the Midwest. Academics Finding Your Purpose Through Foundational Faith & Relational Academics I am a Worship Arts major studying to become a worship pastor. Though it is really hard being almost four hours away from home, I absolutely love attending OCU. I am very involved on campus, not only with my school work, but in a number of different capacities including: Student Ambassadors, Student Government, Drama Club, Choir, my work study position, and the Music department. Being connected on campus is very important to me. I love knowing that I am helping make Oakland City University an amazing school. You shouldn t feel like just a number in a classroom. At OCU, we believe that true education happens through relationships and is built on a foundation of faith. No matter which degree option you pursue, you will find faculty members eager to invest in you to make your educational experience extraordinary. Planning to pursue your Master s or Doctorate Degree after you graduate? Oakland City University offers Master s, Doctorate and Professional Degrees in Business Administration, Christian Studies, and Education. JENNIFER BROWN, WORSHIP ARTS MAJOR

Music OCU has a heritage rich in music. For the past several decades, Earthlight has ministered through Southern Gospel music here on campus and in churches all over the US. In recent years, our music department formed a group called The Great Command, which ministers through contemporary Christian music. Both groups are made up of talented student singers and instrumentalists, and both offer music scholarships. If music ministry is your thing, these are opportunities you won t want to miss out on! Diversity Students from all over the world have chosen OCU as their home away from home. With over ten different countries represented on campus each year, OCU is proud of the diversity of our student body. We believe learning is greatly enhanced within a multi-cultural setting, and we celebrate the international students that are part of our campus.

Athletics Whether you are on the playing field, in the stands, or watching replays on YouTube, the Mighty Oaks are an important part of the OCU community. Oakland City University s Department of Athletics holds dual membership affiliation with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) at the Division I level. Chapel Need some encouragement in the middle of your week? Head over to Provance Memorial Chapel! Services are every Wednesday morning and they usually consist of student-led music and a message from either a Christian Studies professor on campus or the campus pastor. Our services occasionally feature The Good News Players (OCU Christian drama group), Earthlight, and The Great Command (two Christian music groups). We won t require you to attend chapel, but it s a great opportunity for worship and fellowship within the Christian community here on campus. Looking for more? The 812 is our Wednesday night student-led worship service, which also takes place in the chapel. With contemporary worship music and student testimonials, it s an ideal way to get spiritually refueled each week! Finding Your Purpose Through Service Oakland City University is all about service. You will discover it in our classrooms as our professors seek to educate through relationship. You will discover it in our campus community as we seek to impact the culture around us. You will discover it in our student body as we seek to transform the heartland, the nation, and the world. Our service extends to many OCU students are building homes as part of Gibson County s Habitat for Humanity Program. They are in Honduras caring for children at Faith Home orphanage. At Oakland City University, we all are actively seeking opportunities to make a difference in the lives of other. Why? As part of our mission, we believe it is vitally important that our institution bring the message of God s love to others. And it is not only our students who want to deliver that message. Our faculty model their commitment to service through their active engagement in the education of Indiana prisoners. Not just to provide a different way of living but to help people find the true meaning and purpose of life. To date, OCU faculty have educated more than 1,400 Indiana prisoners. We want to provide an avenue where students can develop in their walk with Jesus Christ. At OCU, we want to empower our students to worship together and serve together in order to build His kingdom. MARC GRIMES CAMPUS MINISTER
