Insurance PolyU has acquired Group Personal Accident Insurance Policy for students on annual basis. The said policy covers PolyU registered students against accidental death and permanent total disability as well as accidental medical expenses arising from the activities organized by the University or its student organizations. Insurance Please note that PolyU insurance does not cover personal hospital expenses, public liability and travel outside Hong Kong. Should you intend to travel outside Hong Kong during your study at PolyU, you are strongly recommended to purchase a travel insurance plan which covers any travel/flight delays, theft of personal belongings, local medical and health expenses for injuries or sudden illness, etc. Please check with your travel agent for options of the travel insurance plans. The information of optional Group Medical Insurance ( GM ) and Public Liability Insurance ( PL ) for non-local students in the coming academic year (i.e. 1 Sep, 2017 to 31 Aug, 2018) will be sent to you by email in end Aug. You may consider purchasing it if necessary.

Pre-departure check list Valid passport or travel documents Student Visa You have to present your student visa label to the Immigration Officer at the Airport upon arrival. 2-3 photocopies of your travel documents You must bring some photocopies as spare in case you lose the original one. 5-10 passport phots For your application of the PolyU Student ID card, Student Octopus Card, etc. FOR PROGRAMME REGISTRATION The Notice of Offer from PolyU Originals of academic award certificates, transcripts and professional certificates which have been claimed to support your applications. In case you have lost the original certificates, please request the issuing body to send an official transcript/testimomial direct to the Academic Secretariat, PolyU. Upon completion of the programme registration procedures, you will receive a PolyU Student Identity Card. Proof of Permanent Address of your hometown in English to open a bank account (1) Mainland Students: Official Identity Card issued by Mainland China (2) International Students: Utility bill, mobile phone bill, bank statement, tax demand note, driver s license with address or bank statement, etc. (The bill or bank statement should be dated within the last two months) Cash You may need to use HK dollars as soon as you arrive at the airport. You are highly recommended to bring some cash. RMB HK Credit cards You should check with your bank in advance to see if your credit card can be used in Hong Kong and if any additional charges apply to cash withdrawal at ATM machines, etc.

First-aid medicine and any medicine you need to take regularly Your medical and vaccination records Documents with details of your insurance policy issued in your home country, if applicable. Clothes You can expect around 30-35 degree Celsius during summer; sunny, bright and cool weather during winter. Electronic devices and chargers Travel Adaptor The standard electrical voltage is 220 volts and 3-pin plugs are used in Hong Kong. You are recommended to bring at least one travel adaptor before you come to HK as you may need to recharge your cell phone upon arrival. 220V

Necessities Pre-paid SIM card You can simply get a pre-paid SIM card at any convenience store such as 7-Eleven and Circle K. It will be better to buy pre-paid SIM card at the airport. Octopus Card It is really convenient to use Octopus card for transportation, transaction at supermarkets, convenience stores and vending machines in Hong Kong. You are highly recommended to buy one at the airport. If you are a full-time student at or under age 25, you may apply for a personalized Octopus card with students status. 2. Bank Account Opening The local banks may require you to provide the following documents* for opening a savings account in Hong Kong: 1. Passport/ Travel document(s), (e.g. Chinese Travel Permit for Mainland Students) 2. Proof of Permanent Address of your hometown in English for Mainland Students: Official Identity Card issued by Mainland China for Mainland Students for International Students: Utility bill, mobile phone, tax demand note, driver s license or bank statement, etc, with address in english (The bill or bank statement should be within the latest two months.) 3. Proof of PolyU students identity (e.g. student ID card or Notice of Offer) 4. Proof of Hong Kong residential address in English 5. Contact phone number in Hong Kong& e-mail address For those residing at Students Halls, items 4 will be prepared for you by the Hall Management Section(HMS) and be distributed to you when you check-in at the PolyU Students Halls of Residence. Note for Minors (under 18 years of age) ** A new policy on the arrangement of opening bank account at local banks for people under age of 18 (minors) has been imposed by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). Minors are required to be accompanied by parent/guardian when opening a bank account. The parent/guardian will be requested to sign a declaration and provide a copy of HKID card/passport/other documents if necessary.
