AvantGuard bed Safety by design Information
Information As a healthcare professional, one of your primary concerns is safety As patients become older and more dependent, or more restless and distressed about their condition, they are more at risk of accidents whilst in hospital. This is why healthcare organisations face an increasing challenge to provide a safe and comfortable environment to nurses and patients not only for their protection and well-being, but also to minimise ongoing medical expenses and avoid potential litigation. At Hill-Rom, we make every effort to reduce such risks by providing our healthcare clients with innovative, yet well proven solutions. For many years we have been actively engaged in improving hospital bed safety, working closely with healthcare professionals, government representatives and other groups to seek ways of improving safety, particularly in and around the hospital bed. As a result, our AvantGuard bed range has been designed as an integral system that incorporates all the latest regulatory requirements and advanced technology in the areas of design, safety and reliability.
AvantGuard bed Designed and built for complete safety For over three-quarters of a century, Hill-Rom has been a leader in developing secure products designed to improve patient safety. In 1999 we were instrumental in establishing the Hospital Bed Safety Workgroup* (HBSW) under the guidance and sponsorship of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. As part of its drive to eliminate the risk of entrapment, the HBSW subsequently developed the guidelines that today govern maximum and minimum limits on gaps and openings in bed systems. Today every AvantGuard bed meets these current guidelines and regulatory requirements (EN60601-2-38 and amendment 1). To this end, in our design we are careful to address every risk associated with patient entrapment and the common causes of patient falls. For example, we take care to ensure maximum compatibility between bed, mattress, side rail and accessories. What s more, we continually perform rigorous tests using highly specialised tools to evaluate any entrapment risks. As a result, both the design and testing of every AvantGuard bed meets the requirements of the Hospital Bed System Dimensional and Assessment Guidance to Reduce Entrapment as developed by the HBSW*. *The Hospital Bed Safety Workgroup (HBSW) is a partnership amongst the Food and Drug Administration (FDA); the medical bed industry; national healthcare organisations; patient advocacy groups, and other federal agencies such as Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Veterans Administration. Its goal is to reduce the risk of side rail entrapment in hospital beds. The efforts of the FDA and the Hospital Bed Safety Workgroup have culminated in FDA s release of Hospital Bed System Dimensional and Assessment Guidance to Reduce Entrapment.
Information TotalGuard - maximising patient safety The exclusive TotalGuard side rails enhance patient safety by addressing those areas where risk of patient entrapment is known to be greatest. Provide maximum protection when the sleep deck is level Articulate with the bed for continuous full lateral protection in all positions This guidance provides recommendations for manufacturers of new hospital beds, and for facilities with existing beds (including hospitals, nursing homes and private residences). Automatically adjust to the width of the mattress to reduce the risk of patient entrapment between mattress and side rail Eliminate the risk of patient entrapment between head and foot rails Deny access by the patient to the side rail release mechanism. Healthcare facilities developing comprehensive bed safety programs should consider: following the Clinical Guidance for the Assessment and Implementation of Bed Rails, to assess an individual patient s needs when using a side rail consulting with the hospital bed manufacturer and their facilities risk managers
A wealth of safety features A significant breakthrough in hospital bed safety, the TotalGuard side rail system is complemented by a number of additional safety features that work together to provide patients and caregivers alike with a completely secure solution. With more than 75 years experience in serving the healthcare industry, Hill-Rom remains committed to the continued development of innovative and complementary safety features designed to provide maximum security for all concerned. Secure patient access AvantGuard s patented MobiBar TM feature provides added support to patients getting in and out of bed. Intelligent indicators The warning light on the control panel of the AvantGuard 1200 bed alerts the caregiver when the bed is no longer in its lowest position. Furthermore, a brake-off indicator quickly warns staff if the brake is not set when the bed is plugged into the wall. Both indicators help caregivers ensure the bed is in the safest position for the patient at its lowest position with the brake engaged. Caregiver specific functions With the exception of Emergency Trendelenburg and CPR, all caregiver functions require enabling before they can be activated. To enhance safety, the caregiver can also selectively lock-out the patient functions. All caregiver functions are automatically deactivated 60 seconds after use, avoiding any risk of accidental activation.
Information Winning combinations It is widely acknowledged among caregivers that the physiological complications resulting from prolonged immobility frequently impede patient recovery - where such lengthy inactivity, for example, results in pressure ulcers, in turn increasing the duration and cost of the patient s hospital stay. As well as encouraging regular patient repositioning, the ergonomicallydesigned features of the AvantGuard bed system help promote patient mobility. Combined with Hill-Rom s advanced therapy surfaces, AvantGuard beds greatly enhance the rehabilitation process by helping to treat pressure ulcers and reduce the risk of further tissue damage. Ergonomic platform The technology built into AvantGuard beds goes a long way towards lessening the risks associated with the handling and movement of patients. The design not only cuts down the number of times the caregiver needs to reposition a patient, but also reduces the effort required to manoeuvre or relocate the bed. The ergonomic design of the AvantGuard 1200 bed makes it easier to assist patients in and out of bed. In the long run this means fewer injuries to caregivers and patients, as well as an overall improvement in the efficiency of the caregiver.
Benefits of the ergonomic design: When resetting the position of the bed, a series of five movements enables the AvantGuard 1200 bed to achieve the most ergonomic and comfortable position for the patient Each section of the sleep deck accommodates the most common body shapes and sizes A hip position indicator in the TotalGuard side rail allows for quick, easy and correct patient positioning Transferring patients from bed to chair is a precarious procedure that can increase the risk of back injury to the nurse. Our EasyChair TM feature allows caregivers to seat dependent patients in bed effortlessly at the touch of a button An additional fifth wheel means less effort is required to move the bed around The controls located on the bed s flexible arm are continually within reach of both the caregiver and the patient Therapeutic mattress Total synergy between our R&D and production sites at Montpellier and Pluvigner, coupled with the wealth of skills and experience to be found within our research centres, ensures complete compatibility between the bed s frame and its mattresses. The perfect combination of frame articulation and the therapy surface is designed to help improve the patient rehabilitation process and contribute to the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers. The AvantGuard 1200 bed, combined with Hill-Rom s specialised mattress range, leads to a significant reduction of interface pressures, even in semi-recumbent or chair position. This is proven by measures in our test laboratories and by ongoing positive feedback from our customers. Head of Bed Elevation:...45 Subject:... Information Sound investment In the interests of the safety of both patients and caregivers, healthcare institutions are obliged to ensure that equipment is always in perfect working condition all the truer for the beds in which patients may spend the majority of their hospital stay. As beds become more complex in functionality and variety of movement, routine maintenance has become paramount. For this reason, the AvantGuard 1200 bed has been designed not only with the patients and caregivers in mind, but also with regard to the technicians for whom fast, safe and easy maintenance is essential. Rigorous testing - from design to operation Throughout the validation and verification phases of product development, a series of rigorous tests including 31 normative tests and 53 internal tests are carried out to confirm the overall functionality of the AvantGuard 1200 bed. The testing program involved: 480 tests 2828 man-days 81 beds Durable bed frame The durability of the AvantGuard bed is further ensured by incorporating mechanical keys in the construction of the base and upper frames the strength of the bed s joints is enhanced by interlocking chassis struts, which not only reduces the amount of welding required, but also secures assembly of the components.
Safe and simple maintenance The design of the AvantGuard bed allowed to greatly reduce the number of parts, while access to the main components has been optimised for easy maintenance. What s more, particular attention has been paid to providing safe and simple access to the column, the centralised cabling and the castors. Our patented system, for example, allows castors to be removed and replaced horizontally from the side of the bed for easier and quicker cleaning or changing. This operation, which is usually carried out vertically with other beds, requires the AvantGuard bed to be raised a mere 1 cm from the floor.
Information Going beyond requirements Whereas most hospital beds are marked CE Class 1 with a self-assessment by the manufacturers, the Hill-Rom manufacturing site in France (Pluvigner) has gone a step further by using an independent organization in France (Laboratoire National d Essais) which has performed tests and audits from development through to production in order to assess all quality and safety aspects of the AvantGuard 800 and 1200 beds. The following ISO certifications, delivered to the Pluvigner site, confirm Hill-Rom s quality mission: ISO14001 (1996) Environmental Management System - ECOPASS N F-563601 ISO 13485 (2003) Design, manufacturing and delivery of medical beds and arm-chairs - G.MED N 0851 ISO 9001 (2000) Design, manufacturing and delivery of medical furniture - LNE N 01391 Furthermore, by incorporating the Hospital Bed Safety Workgroup guidelines into the AvantGuard 800 and 1200 bed design, Hill-Rom has implemented the latest know-how in hospital bed safety.
