Do you remember sending valentines when you were a child? Can you recall the construction paper-covered shoe box decorated with hearts and filled with all of your precious valentines? Or perhaps the first serious Valentine's Day gift you received, or your first delivery of one dozen red roses? Receiving a Valentine's Day gift is a magical experience. After all, this holiday is not about obligatory gifts so when you receive a Valentine's Day gift, you know the giver cares about you. Be Your Own Valentine Valentine's Day, while traditionally for sweethearts, is really just a day to show the ones you love how much you care. Friends and family routinely send Valentine's Day cards; parents even exchange valentines mementos with their children. This Valentine's Day, why not take the time to appreciate someone who rarely gets your attention; someone who deserves a thoughtful gift and a few kind words? Someone like you! Whether you are single or attached, Valentine's Day is the perfect day to send yourself a gift of thanks and appreciation. This year, why not be your own valentine? Start thinking of Valentine's Day as a time to celebrate you. Prepare to treat yourself in the same way you prepare to send a gift to your partner or friend. Be as thoughtful for yourself as you would be for the important people in your life. Take the time to consider what you would love to receive and write a thoughtful note to yourself, listing what you love about yourself, and why you are special. However you decide to care for yourself this Valentine's Day, February 14th, remember that it's okay to take time to care for you. It's the perfect time of year to pay extra special attention to your own needs and to celebrate in a way that is meaningful and special to you. Health Corner It's hard to believe that what was once considered to be an indulgence has been proven to be good for your heart, your lungs and your brain. There's even more good news: The flavonoids liberally found in dark chocolate appear to produce the greatest health benefits, but researchers now say milk chocolate is also a rich source. It contains about 75 milligrams per 100 grams, or more than found in red wine. Of course, all flavonoid levels vary by brand of chocolate. A study of 21,000 participants was conducted during the EPIC-Norfolk research project. It showed that after 11 years, those who ate the most chocolate every day (3.5 ounces or about one chocolate bar) had an 11 percent lower risk for heart disease. These participants were also 25 percent less likely to die of any cardiovascular causes than those eating the least (.5 ounces per day on average). It was also associated with a nine percent lower risk of hospital admission or death as a result of coronary heart disease, after taking account of dietary factors. But these results are not a prescription for eating candy. This was an observational study so no definitive conclusions can be drawn. In spite of this disadvantage, doctors at Tufts University say the results are supported by other studies. If you love chocolate, remember that it contains calories. So choose chocolate instead of indulgences like donuts and other treats. It's still best to choose dark chocolate that's higher in flavonoids, say researchers at Tufts University. Note that the Food and Drug Administration doesn't require producers to list flavonoid content on their products. To maximize flavonoids, Jeffrey Blumberg, PhD, of Tufts, recommends dark, bittersweet or baking chocolate. Milk chocolate is processed to make it smoother and less bitter, which also decreases natural flavonoid content.

Exercise for Heart Health American Heart Month is sponsored annually by the American Heart Association to raise awareness of heart disease across the nation during the month of February. Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer of women and it accounts for more deaths in women than all cancers combined? Family history and age are factors that affect the likelihood of the disease, but the good news is that there are ways to reduce your heart disease risk. Manageable risk factors that contribute to heart disease include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and smoking. You can reduce your risk by managing your health and making healthy lifestyle choices like eating right, exercising and by not smoking. You may be surprised to learn that lack of exercise is one of the highest risk factors for developing heart disease. Exercise programs like Live 2 B Healthy are known to reduce these risks; it improves your weight, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. Exercise helps your heart by: Strengthening the heart muscle and cardiovascular system Making the heart more efficient Improving the flow of blood to the heart Improving the heart s ability to handle stress Improving heart failure symptoms The American Heart Association recommends at least two and a half hours of moderate intensity aerobic exercise a week. In addition to aerobic activities, your exercise regimen should include stretching and strengthening activities. Exercises should be personalized and tailored to your abilities as well as progression of your frequency, duration and intensity. Get involved in raising awareness of the heart disease epidemic by educating yourself on the disease. Learn how to exercise safely and correctly and, if possible, seek help from a certified exercise instructor who can develop a customized wellness program to meet your health needs and fitness goals. u www.live2bhealthy.com u
