I hope this edition of the newsletter finds you enjoying your break. Summer sure is going fast. The 2018-2019 school year, which begins on Tuesday, September 4 th, is just around the corner and so too are our Eagle Days registration sessions. Registration packets should be arriving in your mailboxes soon if you haven t already received them. As each registration session is broken down alphabetically, please be sure to identify your scheduled time in the registration packet you receive in the mail. Eagle Days for registration will be: Sophomores Tuesday, August 21 st 8:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. Juniors Tuesday, August 21 st 12:00 p.m. 2:30 p.m. Seniors Wednesday, August 22 nd 8:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m. As a reminder, any student who is unable to attend Eagle Days, should bring with them their completed registration forms and report to the ECC (behind the Media Center) on the first day of school. Students will follow the Eagle Day process, which includes having pictures taken at that time. Once they have completed the process, they will receive their student ID and class schedule and report to their first hour class. I d like to send a special welcome to our incoming Sophomores, members of the Class of 2021. We had a great time meeting you all on our Freshman Fly-up days last June and you are now officially Eagles! As you transition to high school life I would encourage you, and all of our Ike students, to explore and take advantage of the many clubs, activities and opportunities available to you. Juniors, this is an important year for you. As in the past, Juniors will participate in the State of Michigan mandatory MME testing, which includes the SAT. Start the year off on the right foot! Seniors, you are now our school leaders. I encourage you to stay focused on your studies as you complete your last year of high school and make preparations for your post-secondary education. Mark your calendars! This year s Open House is scheduled to take place on September 18 th beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center (PAC). Our teachers, counselors and administrators are looking forward to meeting with you. You will have the opportunity to follow your student s schedule, meet teachers and receive an overview of each course curriculum. Additionally, fall parent teacher conferences are scheduled to take place on October 11 th. We ask that parents use the Parent Portal on PowerSchool to help monitor their student s progress and attendance. Last year, PowerSchool was enhanced to offer parents new resources available in PowerSchool Unified Classroom. If you have not created your new Unified Classroom account please visit http://www.uticak12.org/academics/ powerschool to access information, directions, and helpful videos to do so. The Unified Classroom is a great tool to monitor student progress and support communication between home and the school. If you have any difficulty creating your account or logging in, please contact the main office. The Eisenhower staff is excited for the school year to start. STUDENT AND STAFF RECOGNITION The Marching Band Student Leaders for the 2018-19 season have been selected! There were 21 students (the most ever) try out, so the competition was very difficult. After much debate the following students were selected: Marching Band Field Command Personnel 2018-19 Drum Majors Pamella Kraemer James Labon Jaclyn Swartz Field Commanders Emily Maciasz Emilia Serraiocco Kaleyna Zahuranic 19 Eisenhower students placed nationally this spring in the National Spanish Exam. The rigorous two-day testing is done each March across the country and taken by 150,000 young adult members of the National Spanish Honor Society. Teachers Monica Klesko, Kelly Warzin and Carol Dimovski could not be prouder of their students! Says Klesko, Working with these very talented young people in Spanish IV and AP these years has made me realize how very talented and hard working this group is, but to have so many of our kids place nationally we could not have dared dream of such a wonderful result! Receiving Gold Medals are Nicholas Koshy (11) and Michael Nikolovski (11), placing in the 99 th and 97 th percentiles respectively. Silver Medals were awarded to Giuliano Romano (12) and Allister Ho (12). Jessica Czapla (12), Paige Nicholson (10), and Nicholas Krstevski (12) each received Bronze Medals and Honorable Mentions were conferred upon Travis Barlog (10), Vikrant Desai (11), Christian George (11), Maria Gerges (11), Ethan Gurne (11), Blake Johanson (12), Hannah Kadets (12), Gabrielle Kitto (11), Carlo LoChirco (12), Devyn Music (11), Gretchen Stuben (12), and Mikella Vanlith (12). Felicidades a Todos! Congratulations to all! It is with immense honor and great excitement that we proudly announce the Eisenhower High School Wind Ensemble (our top audition band) has been selected to perform at the 2019 Michigan Music Conference!! In the field of instrumental music, playing at a State conference is the highest accolade an ensemble can earn and we are so happy our students will get to have this great experience. This will be the first concert ensemble in the history of Utica Community Schools to ever play at our State Conference, so we are especially ecstatic to represent our entire music community in this endeavor. Only five bands statewide were selected this year out of 41 applicants. Specifics for the trip to Grand Rapids will be made public as information becomes available! We currently know that the performance will take place Friday, January 25, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. in DeVos Hall, home of the Grand Rapids Symphony. STUDENT AND STAFF RECOGNITION, CONT D After only the second year participating in MIPA, our Eisenhower film students earned 1 st and 3 rd in the state for the onsite film competition. Eisenhower senior, Lauren Vermeulen was awarded one of the two scholarships given to UCS art students by the Darlene Duffy Scholarship Foundation. Students submit applications and a portfolio for judging. Competition was tough! The scholarship was well earned for her digital drawings. They are beautiful and complex. She will be attending CCS in the fall. 2018 art department seniors earned $285,200.00 in scholarships for higher education, pursuing art careers. They are: Mackenzie Brodzik, Maria Chodnicki, Jack Cooper, Stefanie Frontera, Jourdan lafeir, Jennifer Moya, Logan Poe, Marcela Sifuentes, Amber Sikora, Allison Soffa, and Lauren Vermeulen. DAFT scholarship winners: Abby Wittwer, Rachel Southwell and Emilyano Maya have been invited to a week long intensive film camp in Royal Oak, MI where their tuition will be covered for the camp. Marching season began on the last day of school in June with New Marcher Orientation/Home Camp, and each instrumental section has been getting together to practice at least once a week since then. All Marching Band members will come together for a week of Marching Band Camp, August 12 th 18 th, which will again be held at lovely Camp Walden in Cheboygan, MI. Please check www.ikebands.com for VERY IMPORTANT information regarding camp and check in times! The show this year is a Planetary theme and will feature music relative to the Solar System and Stars! You can catch the 2018 Marching Eagles debut performance at halftime during the first Eisenhower Football game of the year on Friday, September 7 th, at Swineheart Field. The Band will perform the show at all home games, as well as other musical selections pre-game. A Pep Band will also be featured at most away games, including Wayne State on August 23 rd. All home games start at 7:00 p.m. You will not want to miss these amazing performances! On Saturday, September 1 st, the award-winning Eisenhower Jazz Ensemble will be performing as part of the 2018 Detroit Jazz Festival! This event, held in Hart Plaza in Detroit, is the largest free Jazz Festival in the United States! This stellar group of musicians will be representing the entire Eisenhower community. It is an honor to play at this event, so come out and see this fine performance from 12:30 p.m. 1:00 p.m. on September 1 st! EISENHOWER HIGH SPORTING EVENT EXPECTATIONS Athletic events and after-school functions are an extension of the school day. All school rules apply and proper behavior is expected. Inappropriate behavior at ANY after-school event will NOT be tolerated. SENIOR CITIZEN ATHLETIC PASS Local senior citizens are invited to take advantage of Friday Night Lights and all other home athletic games with a Utica Community Schools lifetime pass. The pass gives residents 62 years and older free admission to UCS home athletic events at all junior high school and high schools. The pass is not valid at tournaments hosted by the Michigan High School Athletic Association that are held at UCS sites. Passes are available for free at athletic events, UCS secondary schools or by calling 586-797-1078. 9 TH GRADE / FRESHMAN SPORTS 9 th graders participate in sports through Eisenhower s sports program. INCLEMENT WEATHER SCHOOL CLOSING INCLEMENT WEATHER SCHOOL CLOSING INFORMATION Inclement weather or building problems sometimes bring unexpected school closings. At Utica Community Schools there are several ways parents can be informed about these unanticipated days. Utica Community Schools will implement the use of School Messenger, our mass parent communication system, to make telephone calls to parents/guardians informing them of school closing information. It is important that we have updated contact phone numbers. Please make sure that you notify the main office if there are any changes. School closing information is broadcasted on radio stations WJR 760 and WWJ 950. Television stations airing school closing information are: UCS TV, Channel 2 (WJBK), Channel 4 (WDIV), and Channel 7 (WXYZ). EMERGENCY CARDS Please be sure to keep your student s emergency card up to date. In the event of an emergency, we need your student s information to be accurate. It is important that any health issues are listed on the card. Any changes in address or phone number contacts need to be made through the front office staff. UCS SMOKING POLICY In accordance with local, state and Federal law, Utica Schools enforces tobacco and smoke-free environment on all district property and in all district facilities twenty-four hours per day and seven days per week.
