Translation & Interpretation Studies Add New Program Program Title: Medical Interpretation Language Neutral Degree Type: Advanced Technical Certificate (A.T.C.) Program Length: 15 Credits Program Code: C6035 Affected Campus (es): InterAmerican Carol Tulikangas/Juan Carlos Morales Ricardo Bardo-Portilla The Translation and Interpretation Studies (TI) program is requesting to add a language neutral Advanced Technical Certificate (ATC) in Medical Interpreting to its offerings. The proposed program will fulfill a local workforce need for properly credentialed medical interpreters and will create educational opportunities to: 1) speakers of other widely-spoken languages in South Florida and beyond and 2) to medical interpreters who are currently working without the required certification. This course will also focus on how a language is organized and functions, and will establish a connection between Linguistics and Translation Theory. It also addresses current trends in Traductology as a basis for understanding Interpretation as a process, and its implications in interpreters performance. (3 hr. lecture) Curriculum Action Rationale: New course being developed for proposed ATC in Medical Interpreting. 4

Interpreting modes such as sight, consecutive and simultaneous as they apply to the medical setting are revisited. Though this is a language neutral skills course, simulations will be conducted in the working languages of the participants whenever possible. (3 hr. lecture) Curriculum Action Rationale: New course being developed for proposed ATC in Medical Interpreting. Eff. Course No. Course Title Credits Campus Term FOTXXX3 Cross-Cultural Communication for Interpreters 3 6 2167 Course Description: This course provides the participants with the opportunity to identify cross-cultural issues and their impact on interpretation encounters. Students will analyze concepts such as communication, culture, cultural identity, non-verbal communication, and cultural context related to interpretation. Special consideration is given to privacy concerns and the ethical guidelines of interpreting in a medical setting.
