Bowie Senior Center November 2016 All Around the Center News - Events - Activities - Classes - Schedules - Services Honoring Our Veterans Thursday, November 10, 1:00 p.m. Veterans Day is a time to celebrate and honor those who have served and are serving our country. We invite all veterans and members of the community to join us for a special celebration. The Bowie Senior Choraleers will perform several patriotic musical selections for your enjoyment. Light refreshments will be served. If you are a veteran and will be attending, RSVP at the front desk or call 301-809-2300. Thank you for your service! Senior Chorale Holiday Concerts Wednesday, December 7, 4:00 p.m. at the Bowie Senior Center Thursday, December 8, 1:00 p.m. at the Bowie Senior Center Friday, December 16, 7:30 p.m. at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts This year s concert theme is Simple Gifts - Giving our Hearts Through Song. This concert has been designed by chorale director Craig Sparks to convey all of the gifts - love, friendship, home, peace, freedom, and, of course, music - which make our lives rich and rewarding. The program includes music of all styles - traditional holiday favorites, Broadway tunes, popular songs, moving anthems, and stirring spirituals. Accompanist Paula Sparks skillfully creates the musical style of each. The 110 members rehearse every week and enjoy the comradery of the rehearsals, as well as the stage performances which never fail to delight the audiences. The chorale is open to all who like to sing and welcomes new members. For more information, contact the Center or visit the website at: http://bowieseniorcenter.org/bowieseniorchorale/. Tickets for the Senior Center concerts will be $2 or a canned food donation for the Bowie Food Pantry and $8 for the concert at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts. All tickets will be available at the Senior Center starting Monday, November 14. Transportation for Voting in the Presidential Election The Center s bus service will be available for seniors age 55 and older and for disabled citizens living within Bowie city limits. Early voting will be at the Bowie Gymnasium on October 27, 28, and 31 and November 1, 2, and 3. Call 301-809-2324 for a pickup appointment. Pickup runs are scheduled for 10:00, 10:30, 11:00, and 11:30 a.m. On General Election Day, November 8, shuttle services from Pin Oak, Evergreen, and Willows senior communities are scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Arrangements must be made for pickup from all other Bowie areas. To make arrangements, please call the Center at 301-809-2324 by Friday, November 4. Pickups are scheduled between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The Center will be closed Friday, November 11, for Veterans Day and Thursday and Friday, November 24 and 25, for Thanksgiving.

Bowie Senior Chorale Registration The Bowie Senior Chorale is a dynamic musical program. The 110-member group rehearses every Thursday from 2:30-4:30 p.m. during the fall and spring. They perform several community concerts during the year. The chorale is open to any senior age 55 or older and is especially seeking bases and tenors. Registration for the spring 2017 semester will start on Monday, November 28, and run through December 19. Space is limited and new members will be put on a wait list until notification of acceptance. Dues are $25 for Bowie residents and $30 for nonresidents. Senior Tech Tips - IRS Tax Scam In a press release issued on August 2, 2016, the Internal Revenue Service warned taxpayers about a recent increase in telephone scams that involve callers and robocallers impersonating the IRS. According to the statement, the real IRS WILL NEVER: Call to demand immediate payment or call about taxes owed without first sending a bill in the mail. Demand tax payment without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed. Require that taxes be paid in a certain way, such as a prepaid debit card, gift card, or wire transfer. Ask for your credit or debit card number over the phone. Threaten to bring in the local police or other agencies to arrest you for nonpayment. If you receive a suspicious call about your taxes and do not owe taxes or do not have reason to think that you do, hang up immediately. Do not provide any personal information. Contact the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. Visit their website at www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml to report the incident or call 1 800 366 4484. You should also report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission by calling 1 877 FTC HELP (1 877 382 4357) or go to www.ccomplaintassistant.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your report. If you think you may owe taxes, call the IRS at 1 800 829 1040. IRS employees can help you. Intergenerational Breakfast with Santa Save the date: Saturday, December 17, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Plan to bring your grandchildren to the Center for a very special morning event. Pancakes, sausage, fruit, and juice will be served. Enjoy a visit and photo opportunities with Santa, a magic performance by Brandon the Magician, and create holiday crafts with the kids. Admission per person is $5 (children two and under are free). Preregistration at the Center is required by December 9. This community event is sponsored by the City of Bowie and the Bowie Lions Club. 2 City of Bowie Senior Center

Armchair Tour - India Monday, November 7, 12:30 p.m. This tour illustrates the 36 years host Barbara Parthasarathy has spent traveling in India. We will visit five states in India (Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu). Our journey begins at the Taj Mahal and continues with visits to several cities, a hunt for geographical confluence, and the canals of Kerala, known as the Venice of India. Finally, we will attend a wedding in the largest city in south India, Chennai (Madras). Armchair Tour - Iceland Wednesday, November 16, 12:30 p.m. Only six hours from Baltimore via WOW Airlines, Iceland is a unique and exciting travel destination. Its summers are surprisingly warm, though it lies just below the Arctic Circle. Add geysers, glaciers, volcanoes, a rugged coastline, and hundreds of waterfalls to this remarkable mix, and that s what Iceland offers. There is a slight problem, though. The place names and surnames are all but unpronounceable and equally hard to remember. Join host Bill Cramer for this rare treat. Zumba Gold Mondays, 2:30-3:30 p.m., or Tuesdays, 6:00-7:00 p.m. Zumba Gold takes fitness to the next level by moving to Latin dance music. You don t have to know how to dance. Just follow certified instructor Sharon McCarroll and have fun. There are two classes from which to choose. Classes start the week of November 14 and continue for eight weeks. The cost is $33 for residents and $39 for nonresidents. BioFitness Aerobics Class Tuesdays and/or Thursdays, 9:00-10:00 a.m. This fun, low-impact exercise program is choreographed to music. Join certified instructor Jill Snellings for a 60-minute cardio class that is designed specifically for seniors. Classes will begin the week of November 8 and continue for six weeks. The two-day-a-week class cost for residents is $30 and $34 for nonresidents. A one-day-a-week class is also available for $15 for residents and $18 for nonresidents. Holiday Craft Fair Signup Signup starts: Thursday, November 3, for the December 2 craft fair A favorite annual event at the Center is our holiday craft fair. If you are a creative and crafty member of the Center and would like to sell your new handcrafted items, please sign up to rent a table for $10 beginning on Thursday, November 3. Space is limited and tables rent quickly, so don t hesitate (one table per vendor). Holiday Craft Fair Friday, December 2, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. This favorite annual event offers a dazzling display of holiday crafts created by members of the Bowie Senior Center. This is an excellent opportunity for the community to stop by and purchase items from a unique selection of gifts for the holiday season. Bring a friend. Wellness Helping Caregivers Plan for the Holidays The holidays can be a challenging time for caregivers and their families. Advanced planning and deciding where to celebrate the holidays are two key factors in having an enjoyable holiday season. The cognitive level of your loved one is an important consideration when making holiday plans. If the person is alert, oriented, and physically independent, you will have more flexibility. However, if the person has been diagnosed with a form of dementia, the following information may be helpful. During the early stages of most dementias, memory is intact. They are able to recognize relatives, family members, homes, and enjoy the celebrations. Due to familiarity with past holiday visiting routines, participating in the planning can be beneficial. In the moderate stages, memory and level of independence decline. This can present challenges and require more planning. The decline in memory and function requires a caregiver to take an honest look at the person s status. Asking for input and cooperation from family members and friends is important when planning for the holidays. Try to maintain a normal routine and remember the three S s: Simple plan, Small gathering, and Short duration. If you are going to include your loved one in the holiday celebrations, remember: Talk to their physician about medication adjustments and traveling concerns. Understand that behavioral and personality changes can worsen in unfamiliar surroundings. Wandering is a very real concern. Take into account the person s mobility when determining travel plans. Returning home can be very disorienting, even after a brief absence. A brief celebration at your loved one's home or facility with a few familiar family and friends, plus a separate larger family celebration, may make more sense. Be sure to take care of yourself and your own needs. In the later stages, the three S's are very important. Your loved one may not be able to participate in a meaningful way. Any celebration should be in a familiar environment. Finally, do not let guilt or pressure from others get in the way of making appropriate plans. Trust your instincts because you know your loved one best. Rosemary Allender, LCSW-C, LICSW Owner, Family Eldercare Management If you are a caregiver who is looking for more help and support, be sure to check out our monthly Caregiver Support group led by Rosemary on the second Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. Opioid Pain Medications and You Thursday, November 3, 10:30-11:30 a.m. According to WebMD, in 2007 there were about 1.7 million people abusing or addicted to prescription painkillers. While these medications can be highly beneficial, they also come with risks and side effects. In some parts of our state, the use of heroin can be as high as 1 in 10. What may not be as commonly known is that, at times, heroin use can begin after people become addicted to their pain meds. Join us as Priority Partners gives this important talk so you can be on the lookout for signs and symptoms of abuse, as well as learning how to determine if one is becoming addicted. Learn how to save a life. It could be yours. November 2016 9

Information Services Information & Referral Services Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. The Center offers assistance to seniors in the community by providing information and referrals in areas such as health care, finance, family issues, housing options, and many others. Come to the Center or call 301-809-2377 for an appointment. Printed resources are also available. This year-round outreach service is available to help equip seniors and their families with vital information that they need to live the life they choose. Each month a different informative presentation is given at the Center through the Fireside Chat program. An additional information-packed evening program is also offered each month through the Hot Topics program. Fireside Chat: Your Vote Matters Tuesday, November 8, 11:00 a.m. As the 2016 campaign heats up, one story that is being largely ignored is how voter turnout will affect policy. Although many people - particularly senior citizens - believe that their vote does not matter, new research suggests that nothing could be further from the truth. Come out on Election Day and hear the statistics of the voter turnout and how your vote matters. Hot Topics: Pearls, Pumps, and Jeans Tea Talk Tuesday, November 15, 5:45-6:45 p.m. What great fun we will have when we come dressed in our pearls, pumps, and jeans to hear poetry, both original and famous. If you wish to dress in the attire, it will be fun or come as you are and join in this hour of relaxing and learning. You may even recite your own poetry. Let s listen to poetry together while the tea warms our hearts. Open to the public and another opportunity to socialize. Recipe Exchange Monday, November 14, 10:00 a.m. Are you looking for something new to cook this holiday season or do you have a favorite recipe you would like to share? Join members Cecelia Reddy and JoAnn Schinner at the recipe exchange. Here s how it works. Bring ten copies of your recipe and, if you want, describe cooking tips or stories connected to your recipe. Come by and pick up a copy of a delicious Sweet Potato Supreme recipe. Community Holiday Project: Secret Santa This holiday season the Center will once again partner with the VFW Post 8065 Ladies Auxiliary of Bowie to sponsor the children of troops from the Maryland Army National Guard 110 th. If you are interested in purchasing a gift for a child, please stop at the front desk to select a name. The child s age will accompany the name. Purchase the gift, wrap it, and return it to the Center by Thursday, December 1. Thank you for your holiday spirit.
