Editorial CLUB S PROGRAMME FOR RY2011/12 In his maiden speech on Monday 4th July 2011 as the 45th President of the Rotary Club of Pudu, President Steven outlined his proposed programme for the year and introduced his Board of Directors who would help him achieve the goals. What he proposed was noble and in line with the stated Rotary International President s goals. If he and his BOD strived successfully to achieve them it would certainly be one up for Pudu and we would have a great year. He had made Fellowship the corner stone of his year and he pledged to make Rotary enjoyable for all. Thus he had planned many trips overseas to visit our sister clubs and already in the bag was as many as 20 making the trip to the Installation Dinner of the RC of Songkhla. A big contingent was also expected for the trip to Singapore West. For these trips, friendship would be renewed all round including building of new friendship amongst Pudu Rotarians especially the newer ones. On the side, Steven had made ready a couple of cases of whisky available for fellowship dinners! Steven had been conscious of Membership Growth and he and his team were targeting an increase of nett 9 members for the year. For this important task he had given the mandate to none other than veteran Rotarian PP Chow Tain. This is a tall order and PP Sam who thanked the President for his speech did say it was so. Nevertheless a target has been set and members must help him achieve this magic figure. If he were successful PP Sam had pledged a dinner to celebrate the achievement! New members and thus new blood are essential to the survival and growth of any organization and a Rotary Club is no different. To carry out these proposed projects, Steven and his BOD had drawn out a budget which was still to be tabled to the members. In due course it would be as he had a lot of help from the PPs in particular the positive contribution of IPP Choy Ying and PDG Dr Paul Lee. From the proposed budget we know that the Club needed to raise at least RM120,000 and the onerous task was given to Rtn Aaron Ong who wanted to use a charity run to raise the stated amount. Members should rally around Aaron to ensure he meets the target! How do you do it? RUN lah! President s Message In the past three weeks, I have been travelling to attend reciprocal events of Sister Club s Installation Dinner both north and south of the border. These events are part of the international fellowship program in keeping with the tradition to enhance co-operation, create harmony and fellowship among sister clubs. Firstly, I drove by road to Rotary Club of Singapore West on 23rd June 2011 @ Nus Kent Ridge with my wife, Ann Boon Kee and my two daughters, Jane and Cindy. We were warmly welcomed by President Pek Tiong Boon, Board of Directors and members. IPP Bou Leong was there to make sure we were comfortable throughout the event. The dinner was a memorable event which was well planned and executed. I also had the opportunity to spend some quality time to bond with my family members during this trip which made the trip worthwhile. On 29th June 2011, AG K H Low, Ann Boon Kee and myself flew to Bangkok to attend the installation dinner of Rotary Club of Dhonburi at Narai Hotel Bangkok. In the true tradition of Thai hospitality and grace, we were warmly welcomed by President Warawat and members of his club. The occasion had an atmosphere of great fellowship and the highlight of the event was the projector presentation. We had a great time in this bustling city of Bangkok and took home with us lots of pleasant memories. Lastly, we had a convoy of cars with lots of participants travelling by road up north to attend the installation dinner of Rotary Club of Songkhla on 9th July 2011. Those who attended were PP Choo Jee Sam, PP Richard Liew, Ann Angeline, Kimberly (PP Richard s daughter,) PP Gary Lim, Rtn Robert Tan, PE CT Heng, Rtn Patrick Lee, Rtn Arvin, Rtn Laura Lee, Ann Shirley (wife of PP Albert Lim), my wife Ann Boon Kee and daughter, Jane and myself. On top of the warm welcome extended to all of us by our sister club, we also had a great time throught the journey. We made numerous stops along the way taking a slow drive to make sure we all had a safe journey, whilst sampling the various types of food which our country is famous for. Durians, mangosteen and mangoes were readily available....continue on page 8 Best Wishes! 2

It is the most populous city in East Africa with some 3 million inhabitants. The skyline is dotted with 8

skyscrapers and nice government buildings. And like any big city, there are slums too. But we were more interested with the promised reception. So immediately after the hotel breakfast we braved the chaotic traffic for another breakfast (brunch actually) at the Malaysian High Commission. The nasi lemak, sambal sotong, roti canai, teh tarik and Malay kueh were irresistible. However, we all had a story to tell. Many of us had upset stomachs. Over eating and mixing African and Malay food probably shocked the stomach quite a bit. Really bad road Breakfast at the rooftop of the Khweza hotel. A Pajero requiring new shocks Arriving at the High Commission for another breakfast We left Nairobi on Tuesday 31 May 2011 at 8:00 am, taking the A2 northward to Marsabit, some 600 km away. The road out was good since Nairobi seem to be on a road building spree. But it didn t quite last till Marsabit, for at Laisama we entered northern Kenya s desert and bad roads. In some places the road was sandy, in others corrugated. Progress was slow and the 45-50 C heat didn t help. It was tough on men and machines; in fact all the Pajeros broke down with multiple faults like exhaust, aircon gas bottle, batteries falling off and shock absorbers giving up. Fortunately we humans didn t breakdown in spite of the hardship; and bad stomachs. Ah well, that s what adventure is all about; surviving it to tell the tale. Anyway, we didn t make it to Marsabit and had to camp in the desert some 60km short of destination. Rocks, pebbles, sand as far as the eye can see. Yet we met people living in this harsh environment devoid of life sustaining water. Amazing survival instincts indeed. The next day, Friday 1 Jun 2011, we quickly broke camp to drive another 300 km or so to the border town of Moyale. It was again tough going with more breakdowns. The three mechanics were really busy making the cars drivable, never mind the lack of aircons, or exhaust pipes or absorbers. Finally we limped into 9

Moyale well past sundown around 8:00 pm. Actually we were not meant to overnight in Moyale; we were to stay the night in Marsabit yesterday instead of camping in the desert. However, in Moyale somehow Thomas did his magic and found us a hotel, and it was a nice one too. Never mind that it didn t have hot water; it had a good rule instead and that is male patrons should not share rooms with another male. After breakfast the next morning we drove the short distance to the Kenyan Immigration and Customs for crossing into Ethiopia. The crossing was smooth at both sides; and we were ever so pleased to see fresh looking tarmac roads northwards to Addis Ababa. After the last two days of bone shaking experience, who wouldn t. District Conference @ Subang 7-9 Dec 2012 Rotary Information THE CLUB LEADERSHIP PLAN Last week we looked at the administrative structure of a traditional Rotary club. Now let us look what RI has asked Rotary clubs around the world to adopt-the Club Leadership Plan. This brand new Hotel Al Yusra in Moyale didn t even have a sign board yet. The Club Leadership Plan is the recommended administrative structure for Rotary clubs. It is based on the best practices of effective Rotary clubs. As each Rotary club is unique, the Club Leadership Plan is flexible enough to support the individual needs of clubs around the world. It is not mandatory for any club to adopt the Club Leadership Plan. The Club Leadership Plan encourages and utilizes the following best practices of Rotary clubs worldwide: Develop long-range goals that address the elements of an effective club. Set annual goals that support long-range goals. Make sure that all club members feel involved and informed. Hj Abdi is the Manager (probably the owner. He was quite modest.) Keep the lines of communication open, both in the club and with the district. 10

Ensure continuity in leadership from year to year. Customize the bylaws to reflect club operations. Provide regular fellowship opportunities. Actively involve all club members. Offer regular and consistent training The goal of the Club Leadership Plan is to create an effective club that pursues the Object of Rotary, carrying out activities along each Avenue of Services. Effective clubs are able to achieve the Object of Rotary by: Sustaining or increasing their membership base Implementing successful projects that address the needs of its community and communities in other countries Supporting the Rotary Foundation through both financial contributions and program participation Developing leaders capable of serving in Rotary beyond the club level The five pillars of the Club Leadership Plan for organizational structure are: Membership Public Relations Administration Service Projects The Rotary Foundation R.I.
