The Stone Villager County Connection Shelia Warren Assistant Administrator Many times we come across spouses who are caregivers in the home. They take on the responsibility of caring for their loved ones, sacrificing other activities they enjoy such as babysitting their grandchildren, being active in their churches and different organizations, or just going out to lunch with a friend. This lifestyle change can weigh heavily on spousal caregivers, physically, mentally and emotionally. Here are some ways you can help friends or family members who have taken on the role as spousal caregivers: 1. Be positive. Encourage them and keep them motivated. Urge them to seek counseling or join a support group if they re feeling overwhelmed. 2. Help them deal with their feelings. Nothing will be the same after their spouse s chronic illness or death, but dwelling on it and blaming themselves are toxic behaviors that only hurt caregivers. Talk with and listen to them in their time of need or suggest professional counseling. 3. Help them to get help. Nursing facilities, doctors, nurses, therapists, counselors and religious leaders are always available to help spousal caregivers. Nursing homes often offer respite care, or short-term accommodations, for loved ones. This allows spousal caregivers time to regroup and maintain their physical, mental and emotional health. 4. Let them know they aren t alone. By listening, supporting and just being there for spousal caregivers, you make a positive, encouraging difference in their lives. For more information on spousal care giving, please visit www.wellspouse.org. Have a happy month of October! Shelia Warren Assistant Administrator a Letter from the assistant administrator supporting spousal Caregivers We are committed as a facility to understanding our patients experiences and identifying ways to continually improve. We have partnered with the National Research Corporation, a survey expert, to administer new patient surveys. Shortly after your visit here, you may receive a questionnaire asking about your patient experience. Please honestly answer the questions and return the completed form. We need to hear from you in order to improve our quality of care. This is just another way that we re listening to you, our valued patients. Page 4

October 2014 Lisa Gregore, RN, BSN If you re concerned about breast cancer, you may be wondering if there are steps you can take toward breast cancer prevention. Some risk factors such as family history can t be changed. However, there are lifestyle changes you can make to lower your risk. LIFESTyLE CHANGES Lifestyle changes have been shown in studies to decrease breast cancer risk even in high-risk women. The following are steps you can take to lower your risk: Limit alcohol use. The more alcohol you drink, the greater your risk of developing breast cancer. If you choose to drink alcohol including beer, wine or liquor limit yourself to no more than one drink per day. Don t smoke. Accumulating evidence suggests a link between smoking and breast cancer risk, particularly in premenopausal women. In addition, not smoking is one of the best things you can do for your overall health. Control your weight and stay physically active. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of breast cancer. This is From the Desk of the Director of nursing: Recognizing and Preventing Breast Cancer This month, Stone County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is going pink as a part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the CDC, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S. and leading cause of cancer death among women of all races. especially true if obesity occurs later in life, particularly after menopause. For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week, plus strength training at least twice a week. Breast-feed. Breast-feeding may play a role in breast cancer prevention. The longer you breast-feed, the greater the protective effect. Limit dose and duration of hormone therapy. Combination hormone therapy for more than three to five years increases the risk of breast cancer. Avoid exposure to radiation and environmental pollution. Medical imaging methods such as computerized tomography use high doses of radiation, which have been linked to breast cancer risk. Reduce your exposure by having tests done only when absolutely necessary. PREvENTION PLANS Women age 20 and up should have breast cancer prevention plans in place involving routine breast self-exams, clinical breast exams and mammograms. Beginning in their 20s, women should perform monthly breast self-exams and report any changes to their health care professional promptly. Women in their 20s and 30s should have a clinical breast exam performed by a health care professional every three years. Women age 40 and older should have annual mammograms and clinical breast exams. Women with a family history of breast cancer should consider starting mammography at a younger age and additional tests such as breast MRI or ultrasound. You should also consider having more frequent exams. So wear pink this month with Stone County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center as we spread the word about breast cancer. For more information on breast cancer symptoms and prevention, visit www.mayoclinic.org. Page 5
