August 21, 2018 Dear Ventura High School Music Families: Welcome to the Ventura High School and the 2018/19 school year! The Boosters group is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that serves to support Ventura High School s vibrant, award-winning music program. You become a member by virtue of your child s enrollment as a student in a VHS music class. Each year, the Boosters request a donation from each family to provide music students with the basic needs of repair, maintenance and replacement of instruments, classroom equipment and printing expenses. The VHS Music Department receives very limited funding to maintain, repair and replace instruments. The cost to replace an old or damaged instrument can be as much as $12,000, and the department budget does not come close to covering expenses at that level. In addition to basics, the Music Department offers challenging sheet music, clinics and master classes with professionals to provide a high-quality, enriching program. The Boosters assist with fundraising to help cover incurred costs. However, these fundraisers are simply not enough to cover music expenses without additional help from our music families and the Ventura community. The total annual operating budget for department expenses is more than $50,000, a cost that equates to $250 per student. We ask each family to contribute $200 to sustain the quality and level of the VHS music program for our students. The Music Department strives for excellence. We are very proud of the award-winning program that Mr. Hunt and his students have worked hard to achieve. During the 2017-2018 school year, students participated and earned distinction in local, state, regional and nationally-adjudicated competitions. Ventura High School has the only west coast Grand National Invitational participant in 22 years. Both Wind Ensembles and the Honors String Quartet have earned unanimous superior ratings for 8 consecutive years while performing some of the most challenging repertoire composed. The String Orchestra and Concert Band has earned unanimous superior ratings at the state and national level for the past 6 years. Students also participated in the musical productions, all state/all county, master clinics and concert exchanges with other schools. We look forward to even greater achievements this year. Think of your contribution as an investment in your music student s future and academic success: From The College Board, Profile of College-Bound Seniors National Report for 2001: SAT scores of students who took part in music instruction, surpassed students with no music training. Data collected from students taking the SAT indicated that students taking music and arts averaged scores that were higher than non- music students by 60 points on verbal and 43 points on math. Your $200 contribution will help continue to provide fresh, stimulating and challenging opportunities for music students and is tax-deductible. Ventura High School is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization, Tax ID #77-0409948. Contributions are voluntary. Please fill out the Donation and Sponsor Form contained in this packet and write your donation check to VHS. Use the enclosed envelope and deliver to the music room by Friday, August 31 st or bring to the Parent Meeting on Tuesday, September 4 at 7 p.m. Alternatively, you may make your donation by PayPal at. Thank you in advance for your support, we look forward to a great year!

2018/2019 FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES Music Booster fundraising monies are divided between the General Fund (GF) which is used to pay for basic operating expenses of running the music program and the Student Travel Fund (STF), which is used to help students earn money toward their travelling performance costs. Fundraising Opportunities for Aggregate Student Travel Fund (STF) In order to help defray the costs of travelling, students and their families have the opportunity to participate in Booster fundraisers that offer a percentage that goes to the aggregate Student Travel Fund.
