Danny Pettry s Independent Education Program Page 3 of 5 Course Information The estimated time for completing this course is five hours. This includes: reading the full book, contemplation of the book, and completing the quiz. This course is designed to help you (the independent learner) to have a better understanding of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), which is an evidenced based practice for people who struggle with the ability to regulate their emotions. DBT has been shown to be helpful for people with bipolar disorder, anger management problems, depression, and anxiety. A recreational therapist (practitioner) should work closely with the treatment team (including mental health therapist, psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker, and other professionals) before using DBT techniques. The course developer (Danny Pettry) recommends that recreational therapists in psychiatric, behavioral health, and mental health settings to co-facilitate DBT skills trainings with a mental health counselor who is skilled in DBT to learn more. There are many aspects of DBT skills that can be applied to rec. therapy practice. Some RT interventions could be designed to help a person/ client to: Improve relationships/ social interaction skills Manage crisis Become more mindful Find activities as a healthy distraction to daily problems Balance emotions Many of these skills are applicable to the practice of recreational therapy. Quiz questions will prompt the independent learner to think of ways they can use this information in recreational therapy practice.
