Wildcat Traditions Keepers are alumni of the university who have fully embraced the Wildcat Way through immersion in their education, experiences, and lifestyle. These tradition keepers have demonstrated commitment, passion, and respect for the history of the University and have taken the first step towards becoming a successful alumnus. Following convocation all students will receive a copy of the Traditions Keeper book. This book will introduce students to 91 traditions that embody the CWU experience. By experiencing and recording your involvement in the 1891 Traditions Challenge, you will become part of the history of Central Washington University and in turn you will leave your mark for future generations. This card serves as your general school identification card. It also contains your meal plan and will grant you access to CWU sporting events, the library, computer labs, and the Recreation Center. You also have an option to choose the Maxx card, which is a combination of your CWU Connection Card and U.S. Bank debit card. The Maxx card is a great option for CWU students, as U.S. Bank is the only full-service bank on campus. This session is designed for students and parents who are uncertain how to accept and activate their aid. William O. Douglas Honors College (DHC) Academic Advising This session is for students who have been admitted to the Douglas Honors College. We ll explain the program, general education requirements, and we will help you plan for fall. Students in Transition (Students only) College is a time of significant change. This session will discuss roommates, alcohol and other drugs, romantic relationships, communication with family, faculty connections, campus safety, diversity on campus and other such topics. This session is to aid in your transition helping you manage your freedom while avoiding the bigger obstacles you might encounter during your first year at Central. Parents & Families in Transition (Parents/Guests only) We recognize that parents and families will also go through a transitional period. This session will provide information that will help parents and families adjust as well as assist with their student s adjustment to college. Housing and Dining University Housing and Dining Services are committed to providing you with a premier residential experience. Join us for this all-important session to learn about the various residence halls and how to select the right meal plan for you. Tips to Thrive at Central 50% of Central s incoming class are First Generation students. First Generation students are defined as the first in their family to attend college. Navigating Central can be challenging for new students and families, especially when college experience is new to the entire family. This session will provide students and family members with tools and resources to thrive on campus. Topics will include: academic work load; time management; balancing academics, social and family demands; utilizing faculty support and managing new freedom. Student Medical & Counseling Services Please join a representative of the medical and counseling staff to review the services provided including prescriptions, immunizations, scheduling, supplemental student insurance, ancillary fees, and availability of medical and mental health services offered on campus. Veterans Services Students that will be using GI Bill Education Benefits please attend this session. Session will cover specific requirements for students while utilizing the GI Bill and will give a detailed explanation of how the benefits are processed. Feel free to bring your parents/guests. B2B is primarily comprised of male students who strive for academic excellence and make a commitment to plan and implement programs that benefit their community at large. We encourage our participants to embrace leadership by being positive examples for each other through a strong commitment to academic achievement, brotherhood, and community service. We provide weekly study sessions, weekly developmental seminars for students of all ages, business meetings, social and religious activities, and work with various non-profit service agencies. Your First Quarter Schedule Meet with an advisor to receive tips for creating a schedule that will aid you in moving towards your academic goals. Upon leaving this session you should have the basic skills to put together several schedule options to review the next morning 1:1 with an advisor or faculty member. CAMP Information Session (CAMP Students/Parents/Guests only) The College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) is a federally funded program that provides intensive support to students from migrant and seasonal farm working families during their first year at CWU. At this session, CAMP eligible participants will have an opportunity to meet CAMP staff and learn more about the program. Parents are welcome, and light refreshments will be served. Residence Hall Tour Want to see what a typical decorated residence hall looks like? Orientation leaders will be giving guided tours to show you a common space and a sample room. Please note that because we respect the privacy of the students and conference guests who live on campus during the summer, we are limited in what we are able to display. Sunrise Yoga moves through yoga poses and sequences that will wake you right up. Use your breath to challenge your strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance, and begin this class saluting the sun. This class is suitable for all fitness levels and is being offered from 6:15-7:00 a.m. The entire Recreation Center is open for you to explore from 6:00-8:00 a.m. Signed waivers are required for anyone using the facility. Residence Hall Key Check-In Be sure to remove all personal belongings from your room prior to breakfast. If you need to store items we have a luggage room that is available until 1:00 p.m. Failure to return your key could result in a $35 re-core charge. Class Registration (Students only) By now students should have developed a list of class options and two possible schedules for Fall quarter. Academic advisors and many program advisors will be available to look over course selections and help students finalize Fall quarter schedules. Securing Your Federal Student Loan This is a drop-in opportunity that will allow parents and students to complete their online Parent/PLUS Loan Application (parents only), Entrance Counseling (students only), and/or Master Promissory Note (both parents and students). Parents and students can also ask questions about the Federal Direct Loan programs and about how to be a responsible borrower. Stop in our computer lab for assistance and more information about your Federal Direct Loans. CWU Services Fair This is an opportunity to walk through a number of booths from multiple departments that provide a great number of services on campus. From Understanding All Things Tech at CWU (IS) to Leadership and Community Engagement opportunities, and from Student Employment to the University Police, please come and meet, greet and get your questions answered at the CWU Services Fair. Campus Q&A Panel (Parents/Guests only) Representatives from across campus will be available to talk with you on any topic that is on your mind. It is a great opportunity to get those last questions answered as Discover Orientation comes to a close. The session will also discuss some of the responsibilities and expectations that are placed on you as a member of the campus community that help to promote overall safety and student success. Life in the Residence Halls So what is it REALLY like to live in the residence halls? What is an R.A.? Here is your chance for a candid discussion with residence hall professionals and student staff. Get an inside perspective on residence living with a roommate, sharing a bathroom, forming a community, getting involved in hall council, and events, etc. If you ask it, we will answer it! 15

CWU N E IMPORTANT ABBREVIATIONS AND TERMS S FERPA Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. This will be discussed in more detail during Discover Orientation. Students must sign a Release of Information form (included in your student packet) in the presence of a CWU employee in order for students records to be released to parents or others that they designate. MyCWU MyCWU is the on-line portal and primary system-of-record for student information at Central Washington University. MyCWU includes admissions, financial aid, student records, academic progress, and student financial functions. Other auxiliary systems pass transactions to MyCWU to maintain accurate student records. MyCWU is the primary source of information for students and faculty, including class schedules, registration, grades, and financial need. CWU EMAIL In order to comply with FERPA guidelines your @cwu.edu email address is the only account that we can verify your identification and is the only address to which official university correspondence will be sent.
