Program Summary AmeriCorps Members are placed at the Alaska SeaLife Center for a term of National Service to support our programs that improve environmental awareness, education and recruit volunteers to expand positive impact of volunteerism in the community. Members serve up to 11 months, earn a monthly living allowance, an Education Award upon completion of service and gain valuable leadership skills. Host Background: The Alaska SeaLife Center is Alaska s only public aquarium and ocean wildlife rescue center celebrating ten years on the shores of Resurrection Bay. Visitors to this window on the sea have close encounters with puffins, octopus, sea lions and other sealife while peeking over the shoulders of ocean scientists studying Alaska s rich seas and diverse sealife. Service Description: The Avian Corps Member serving with the Avian department will support the ASLC by serving alongside the Husbandry staff. The Avian Corps Member will make daily observations and notes of the health and condition of the exhibit and research animals. Other service projects may include participating in animal diet preparations, routine cleanings and water quality testing of both the exhibit and research birds housed at the ASLC. The Avian Corps Member will provide daily educational seminars and will create educational programs or props. They will create materials related to these presentations, including posters, PowerPoint presentations and pamphlets that foster environmental education and awareness. They will also organize and lead Avian Encounters, which are unique opportunities for the Avian Corps Member to educate others about the life history of the animals in a fun and exciting setting. They will use their knowledge of the animals to make a personal and positive connection with individuals from all walks of life. The Avian Corps Member s service will benefit research directly related to Alaska's threatened or endangered species. The Avian Corps Member will also assist the Avian staff in current research projects and data collection associated with those projects, while maintaining written and computer records. The Avian Corps Member will spend time with the animals learning their behaviors in order to develop a positive relationship throughout their service. As part of our team, the Avian Corps Member will also help with improvements to habitats and bird enrichment programs and will learn and assist in training and preparing birds for the Encounter programs. Participation with other ASLC conservation efforts, i.e. recycling team, will be highly encouraged. In addition, the Avian Corps Member will be required to choose an individual community service project within the town of Seward for weekly community service. Strong emphasis will be given to projects that are education based and/or serve a strong community need. All Members will also be required to participate in a group community service project once a month within the town of Seward or the surrounding area. The ASLC will help all Members fulfill these and other AmeriCorps requirements. This is a full time service position starting 10/14/2011 and ending 9/14/2012.

Service Description: The Conservation Corps Member will serve with our Conservation Department and gain firsthand experience organizing, developing and implementing diverse aspects of local conservation projects. The Member will serve with environmental organizations and universities, such as the Kenai Fjords National Park, the University of Alaska, Anchorage, Resurrection Bay Conservation Alliance and Qutekcak Native Tribe. They will learn about Alaskan's natural environment, its diverse cultural heritage and how to promote sustainable actions. The Member will participate in a variety of conservation projects, such as marine invasive species monitoring and outreach, and marine debris investigations and outreach at local and global levels. The Member will engage and educate ASLC staff, volunteers and the community about the importance of conservation and environmental stewardship. Members serving with the Conservation Department will also be heavily involved with the ASLC Green Team Recycling Program. The Member will monitor local Resurrection Bay for invasive species by checking tunicate plates and crab traps with our partner the KFNP. The Member will develop outreach and work with the local high school marine science class on invasive species content and monitoring. They will also provide educational seminars and will create materials related to these presentations, including posters, PowerPoint presentations and pamphlets that foster environmental education and awareness. As advocates for recycling, Members will educate Seward citizens about what, how and where to recycle as part of ASLC's "Green Team." In addition, the Member will be required to choose an individual community service project within the town of Seward for weekly community service. Strong emphasis will be given to projects that are education based and/or serve a strong community need. Members will also be required to participate in a group community service project once a month within the town of Seward or the surrounding area.
