STUDENT ACTIVITIES Providence Catholic High School sponsors a wide variety of engaging activities, clubs and organizations that allow students to meet new friends and become involved in the Providence community. Activities are designed to give each student opportunities to have fun, work with other students and their teachers, enjoy wholesome recreation and provide service to the larger community. All students are encouraged to become involved in activities and events outside their daily classroom schedule. There is so much to be learned outside of the classroom! Student Activities are open to Providence students regardless of their year in school. It is never too late to Have fun Celtic style and get involved at PCHS! STUDENT CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS Providence Catholic offers over thirty clubs and organizations that cater to different interests from the arts, to community service, to recreation. There is something for everyone. Since meeting days and times vary for each club and organization, please watch the Daily Announcements for specific dates, times and locations of each meeting. Art Club: No art experience is necessary! Art Club Is a hands on workshop that includes techniques including sculpture, painting, tie-dye, printmaking and drawing. One project will be completed at each meeting. Meetings: Every other Tuesday beginning the 2 nd week of school in the Art Room Moderator: Mrs. Denise Zlogar (Room 21) Augustinian Youth Ministry: AYM is one of the largest organizations at Providence Catholic with over 150 members promoting Christian service and Augustinian spirituality. AYM organizes two blood donor drives, two food drives, clothing drive and many other inside service activities that benefit Providence, as well as the outside communities. AYM members are also expected to attend mass with AYM as their intention and complete 10 outside services hours to their parish or community. AYM begins in September and ends with an induction Mass in April. Moderators: Mrs. Jennifer Williams (Dean s Office) & Mrs. Jan Maratea (Room 117) Band: Share your instrumental music talent at home athletic events, concerts and competitions. Meetings: Periods 5 and 6- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday in the Band Room (Room 229) Moderator: Mr. Lawrence Rogers (Room 229) Bass Fishing: Get to know the sport of bass fishing! This club meets for some classroom instruction and guest speakers as well as some on the water outings in preparation for various high school bass fishing tournaments. In the spring, students prepare for the IHSA sectional tournament with a chance to fish for a state title. We will meet during the fall and spring sport
seasons plus outings. Moderator: Mr. Scott Orban and Mr. Tony Fidanzo Book Club: Make new friends while reading and discussing a wide range of books from pulse-pounding thrillers to literary favorites. Refreshments are provided when we meet once a month to discuss them. Favorites from the past have been The Fault in our Stars, World War Z, Eleanor & Park, and Flowers for Algernon. Meetings: 1 st Wednesday of each month Moderator: Ms. Mary Colbert (Room 109) Celtic Piper Corps: The Celtic Piper Corps is comprised of students that are interested in learning to play an authentic Celtic instrument. The history and heritage of the bagpipes instrument is a rich one and any student is welcome to join! There is no former musical experience needed in order to join the Celtic Piper Corps, just desire to learn and perform. The bagpipes perform at a variety of events at PCHS and out in the community and are instructed by a professional piper. Students receive instruction and lessons at no charge to the student, and scholarship opportunities are available. Moderator: Mr. Lawrence Rogers (Room 229) Choir: Any student who likes to sing can join choir! We have three separate tracts: Beginning (for those who have never been in choir at PCHS); Concert and Honors. Concerts, competitions, masses and music department tours every other year help the Singing Celtics improve their choral skills. Students become eligible for Tri-M Music Honor Society after one year in choir and maintaining a 3.0 GPA. Many Singing Celtics graduates receive scholarships from colleges just to sing in choir. Meetings: Period 2- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday in the Music Room 229 Moderator: Dr. Stacy Eckert (Room 229) Class President: The Class President is chosen from the Student Council Representatives. The President and Class Representatives work directly with the Class Moderator on class specific events. Meetings: Periods 5 and 6- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday in the Band Room (Room 229) Moderator: Mr. Lawrence Rogers (Room 229) Computer and Technology Club: The Computer and Technology Club explores and experiments with new computer software and hardware. The club will create games using software tools such as Scratch and Gamemaker. Students will work together to program a Finch robot (http://www.finchrobot.com/). Club members are encouraged to bring their own technology ideas to meetings. The goal of the club is to have fun and learn about the constantly changing world of technology. Diversity and Inclusion Club: The Student Diversity and Inclusion Club will provide a forum promoting open, honest, and non-judgmental conversations and communication between students on the social challenges that young people face as they relate to all forms of diversity and inclusion. The SDIC will seek to promote involvement and/or sponsor different student, school, and community events in an effort to continue to raise cultural awareness and promote accountability. The SDIC will provide a safe environment for all students to voice their concerns, celebrate differences, and share ideas as they relate to all forms of diversity and inclusion. The SDIC will provide opportunities for students to further their leadership skills and to develop character while being active role models in our school community. Moderator: Mr. Luke Senffner (Counseling Office) Habitat For Humanity: Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, ecumenical, Christian-based organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Over the summer, and occasionally during the school year, Providence Catholic students travel to build homes near and far. Being a part of this group will open the door to travel and give you an opportunity to make a difference. Be a part of the planning and building of homes for families everywhere. Moderators: Mr. Ken Micks (Room 12) International Club: Hola! Bonjour! It s all Greek to me! Come develop an understanding and appreciation of different cultures through movies, food sharing, cultural exchanges and celebrations of various cultures holidays. Come join the fun! Moderator: Mrs. Jackie Poulos (Room 24) International Thespian Society: Students can gain admission into the International Thespian Society on the basis of their achievements in the school s theatre program. Students earn qualifying points for their work as a member of the cast, crew or pit orchestra. PCHS students are honored for their participation in the International Theatre Society at the end of the year theatre banquet. Its members are eligible for numerous national scholarships. Moderator: Dr. Stacy Eckert (Room 229) Law Club/Mock Trial Team: Do you like to debate? The Law Club/Mock Trial team competes at regional and state competitions sponsored by the Illinois State Bar Association. The team meets weekly during the first semester learning the fundamentals of trial techniques. Beginning on or about November 1st, the team continues to meet weekly and begins preparation on the actual case that is the subject of the state and regional competitions. Practices continue up until the state competition, which takes place every March in Springfield, IL. There will be discussions about law and current issues in addition to preparation for mock trial competitions. Moderator: Ms. Emma Barnes Comic Book/Manga Club: A specialized book club that discusses selected comics, trade paperbacks, manga and all the great pop culture associated with them. Besides reading and talking about what we re reading, we bring in games & gaming, movies & TV, cosplay, and theme-related activities & snacking. We meet twice a month in the BLC. Moderator: Mr. Vince DeVivo
Math Team: This is an academic competition team as well as a club that challenges student s math capability. The Math Team is part of the Chicago Catholic Math League while also competing in a number of invitationals. Moderators: Mrs. Jamie Walker (Room 203) and Mr. Anthony Odeh Movie Club: From the classics of the Golden era of film, to the modern day tour-de-forces, the Providence Catholic Movie Club strives to broaden students understanding of films, great directors and great performances through viewing and discussing seminal works of film. Whether it is a discussion of camera angles in a Hitchcock thriller, the use of multiple story lines in Citizen Kane, the use of animation in Waking Life or the use of lighting in A Touch of Evil. The Providence Catholic Movie Club is open to anyone, whether you are a seasoned critic or a teetotaler of cinematic excellence. Come on in and watch a great film, and don t forget the popcorn! Moderator: Mr. Sean Richards (Room 223) National Art Honor Society: The NAHS sponsors the annual art exhibit of student work and activities, which promote the appreciation and awareness of visual arts within our school and community. In order to become a member of NAHS, 3 or more art classes must be completed with a grade of A or B. Moderator: Mrs. Denise Zlogar (Room 21) National French Honor Society: The Société Honoraire de Français is for students who have demonstrated proficiency in the French language. To qualify, students must have earned A s for three consecutive semesters in French along with maintaining a B average in their other classes. Membership dues are $10, and students must attend the induction ceremony after school. Moderator: Brock Austrums (Room 20) National Honor Society: NHS is an honorary school service organization based on character, scholarship, leadership and service open to juniors and seniors. The members responsibilities include assisting at the Providence Catholic Open House and at several school events throughout the year. Moderators: Mr. Kevin Oliver (Room 114) and Mrs. Lisa Savage (Room 111) National Spanish Honor Society: The Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica is for students who have demonstrated proficiency in the Spanish language. To qualify, students must have earned A s for both semesters of Spanish 3 and first semester of Spanish 4. Membership dues are $10, and students must attend the induction ceremony after school. Moderator: Linda O Keefe (Room 103) Proviscope: Begin your journalism career at Providence Catholic. Write for the school newspaper and develop skills such as interviewing, writing, editing and reporting. Moderator: Mr. Ed Barrett (Advancement Office) Respect Life Club: The organization provides students the opportunity to participate in projects and events dealing with respect for life. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the March for Life in Washington D.C. each year. Moderator: Mrs. Amy Potempa (Room 115)
Scholastic Bowl: Join us for the only IHSA-sanctioned academic sport at Providence! Team up with your classmates for game show-style competition with other schools, as well as the faculty. Test your knowledge and challenge yourself; show that Providence has the best and brightest around! Practice is twice a week, there are tournaments and conference competitions as well. Moderators: Mr. Chris Tagler (Room 209) and Mrs. Diane Dau (Room 204) Science Club: The club builds model bridges, does environmental projects and many more interesting science projects. Members of this club can, at times, enter their projects in local competitions. Moderator: Mr. Sean Richards (Room 223) Strategic Games Club: The club meets bi-weekly allowing students to challenge themselves and peers with board games such as Risk, Chess, Checkers, Axis and Allies, Go and Sorry. Moderator: Mr. Dave Devine (Computer Room 2) Student Ambassadors: Student Ambassadors consist of students recruited annually by the Director of Student Enrollment. Selection is based on personal applications and teacher recommendations, as well as the applicant s personal reputation, academic good standing, character, citizenship and school spirit. Moderator: Mrs. Rachel Ellingson (Director of Enrollment) Student Council: Join the Student Council by running for office in any or all of your four years of school. Plan many student activities like Homecoming Week, Harvest Drive Olympics and Christmas Dance. Student Council members are also asked to help with various other school related activities. Be a part of the action and make a difference in the Providence Catholic community. Meetings are at least twice per month before or after school. Elections are in May for Sophomores-Seniors and in November for Freshman. Moderator: Mrs. Katelyn Cornfield (Room 107) Theatre: Join the theatre program by auditioning for our fall or spring productions. Past productions have included The Sound of Music, You re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, Wizard of Oz, Godspell, Little Women, Fiddler on the Roof, and Grease. If you prefer stage crew, our program helps provide training in set building, lighting, sound, costumes and makeup. If you play guitar, drums or other instruments, pit orchestra is the way to go! Students become eligible for the International Thespian Society by accruing points with each production. Moderator: Dr. Stacy Eckert (Room 229) Tri-M Music Society: Modern Music Masters (Tri-M) Honor Society is for music students who exhibit exceptional scholarship, leadership, service and character in the music field. Students must be enrolled in a Providence Catholic music ensemble to main active member status. Service projects include Jr. IMEA Choral Audition Clinic, charity drives at concerts and Music Step-Up Night. Tri-M Music Society meets quarterly. Moderator: Dr. Stacy Eckert (Room 229) Winterguard: This is a highly competitive ensemble that explores techniques in dance, flagwork, and other equipment such as rifles and sabres while performing to a prerecorded musical selection. This team competes in the MidWest ColorGuard Circuit, whom is affiliated with WGI (WinterGuard International). Moderator: Mr. Lawrence Ball and Mr. Lawrence Rogers (Room 229)
Yearbook: Help make memories that will last forever. The Kelt is published by students for students. Computer layout and photography are just some of the skills you will learn working on this important publication each year. This club meets weekly. STUDENT EVENTS An Evening with the Arts: Spend an evening with out Fine Arts Department touring the Providence Catholic student art show and enjoy the band and choir concerts. Career Day: Career Day is an event that takes place every other year at Providence Catholic sponsored by the Advancement Office. Alumni, current Providence Catholic parents, parents of Providence Catholic alumni, community leaders and other friends of the school are invited to share their professional insights and personal stories with the student body. Typically, 40 or more speakers participate in each Career Day. The students sign up in advance for the presentations they wish to attend and are scheduled accordingly. Clothes, Food & Toy Drives: The Providence Catholic community comes together at various times of the year to collect items for local organizations and families in need. These events are sponsored by the Augustinian Youth Ministry. Dances: Bring a date, come by yourself or with a group of friends, to our three major dances: Homecoming, Christmas and Sweetheart. Prom takes place in April/May for upperclassmen and is the only traditional couple dance at PCHS. Dress Down & Spirit Days: Dress down for charity once each quarter for $1.00. The Student Council chooses the charities. Also, celebrate your Celtic pride throughout the school year by wearing Celtic apparel on Spirit Days! Entertainers & Motivational Speakers: Throughout the year, outside entertainers and speakers come to Providence Catholic for a day or evening assembly. World Language Week: During this week we celebrate the many languages across the world! We have international lunches, prayers in different languages, along with many other fun activities to introduce different cultures! Harvest Drive Olympics: Compete with your classmates against other classes, and your teachers, to celebrate Providence Catholic s annual fundraising drive. Events include obstacle course, dodge ball, tug of war and more. Homecoming Week: Celebrate your Celtic Pride during Homecoming Week! This is a week set aside in October to celebrate the Providence Catholic spirit and returning alumni with a pep rally, dance and events during the week, including special dress down days and a flag football game versus the faculty! Intramurals: A series of events that can be a team, individual and/or co-ed throughout the school year. This may include softball, basketball, bags, volleyball, dodge ball and other possibilities. Open Mic Nights: Come share your musical talent for one of our open mic nights throughout the year.
Pep Rallies: Show your support and wish athletic teams your best at one of the pep rallies held throughout the year. Poetry Slam: An annual event sponsored by the Providence Catholic Book Club where students perform an original poem or a favorite poem written by another author. Come slam in the Learning Commons! Prizes awarded! Provi s Got Talent: An annual talent show for all Providence students. Come dance, sing, act or share any special talent you have with the Providence community. Quetico Wilderness Trip: Can you rough it? Every summer Providence Catholic offers a camping and canoeing trip to Canada after the 4 th of July holiday. Red Ribbon Week: Every October, the Providence Catholic community unites to take a stand against drug and alcohol abuse. The Counseling Department sponsors this week with educational displays in the cafeteria, Student Assistance Program presentations and a special Wear Red dress down day to show our community s visible commitment to being drug free. Senior Week: A week in May set aside to celebrate our graduating seniors. Events include special dress down days just for seniors, Baccalaureate Mass, Senior Dinner Dance and a special Alumni Association breakfast. Ski Trip: Hit the slopes with your friends on an all-day ski trip to Wisconsin. A Providence Catholic bus leaves early in the day, returning back at school that evening. Spring Spirit Week: A week during the spring to celebrate Celtic Pride! Activities for the week include lunchtime games and activities and a special Spirit Assembly with the famous senior vs. junior male dance competition. Students may come to school out of dress code during themed dress down days. Theatre: Audition for one of the fall or spring productions the Theatre Department has to offer. Do not like the spotlight? There are plenty of behind-the-scenes roles for students, as well as a seat waiting in the audience. Admission is free to any theatre production with a Providence Catholic school ID.
