ABOUT THE CAMPUS SAFETY SYMPOSIUM FEATURED SPEAKERS David L. Perry Chief of Police Florida State University Police Department Assistant Vice President for Safety Florida State University Florida State University s Chief of Police, David L. Perry, has worked in law enforcement since 1993. He began his career as a police officer for the Albany Police Department in Albany, Georgia where he quickly rose to the rank of investigator then transferred to the Albany Dougherty Drug Unit. At age 26, he was appointed Chief of Police at Albany State University. From 2003 to 2006 Perry served as the Deputy Chief of Police for Clemson University. In 2006, David accepted the position as Chief of Police for Florida State University (FSU). As FSU s Assistant Vice President for Safety and Chief of Police, his responsibilities include overseeing safety, police and security services on campuses in Panama City, Sarasota, and the Florida State University School (K-12) in addition to his main campus responsibilities. His responsibilities also include overseeing access control and CCTV systems, transportation parking enforcement, and emergency management for the university. Chief Perry shares his extensive knowledge of the campus law enforcement profession while teaching as an adjutant professor with FSU s College of Criminology and as a Certified Instructor for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Leadership Academy. He has provided instruction related to criminal justice to hundreds of students in a traditional instruction setting and online, as well as presenting in-service training courses to campus, city, and county law enforcement agencies. In addition to serving as the immediate Past President for the North Florida Chapter of the National
Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, David is a dedicated board member for the Florida Police Chiefs Association (2nd Vice President), a member of the Red Cross of the Big Bend and is the Immediate Past President for the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators representing all colleges and universities in the world. David is a graduate of Albany State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice. He holds a Master s in Public Administration from Albany State University (2002). He has also completed the basic police recruit training academies in Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. Rebecca Bolante, PhD, CRC, CTM Director of Threat Management Resources Chemeketa Community College Rebecca Bolante is the Director of Threat Management Resources, Chemeketa Community College located in Salem, Oregon. Bolante provides training and teaches online courses in threat assessment and trauma response. Bolante provides consultation for various institutions, agencies, and entities as we work together to mitigate targeted violence. She is a trainer and consultant for the college's threat assessment team and the trauma response team. Dr. Bolante has developed standardized processes for the psychological response after a disaster. Recently she provided her expertise and assistance after the Umpqua Community College incident. This included evaluating the various needs, setting up support rooms, and coordinating resources for both civilians and the EMS community. As a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, Bolante has gained insight from her more than 25 years of work within the field of disabilities. Dr. Bolante is a Certified Threat Manager through the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals. Rebecca Bolante is also active with the ASIS International as she is currently the 2 nd Vice Chair of the School Safety & Security Council. Rick Parfitt, MA, CTM Chief of Police/Director of Public Safety Florida SouthWestern State College Rick has been Chief of Police/Director of Public Safety of Florida SouthWestern State College, Fort Myers for the past ten years. Rick has 38 years in municipal and campus police agencies in Pennsylvania and Florida, having been one of the youngest police officers in Pennsylvania, starting his career at 19. Parfitt holds a Master of Arts degree from California University of Pennsylvania, a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, 195th Session. He became one of the first 24 nationally Certified Threat Managers (CTM) through the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals in 2015. At the college, he is a member of the Behavioral Intervention & Recommendation Team and the Criminal Justice Advisory Committee. Rick is a member of: International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, Association of Threat Assessment Professionals, recently became the president of the Florida ATAP Chapter, National Behavioral Intervention Team Association. Dave Benson Principal/Owner DJ Benson & Associates, LLC Dave Benson is an accomplished security professional with over 40 years of Public and Private Sector expertise in the areas of Security Management, Protective Operations, Contingency Planning and Vulnerability/Risk Assessment & Mitigation. Dave specializes in partnering with clients to develop Strategic Solutions to support individual, group or organizational goals. Dave founded DJ Benson & Associates (DJBA) after an acclaimed career with the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security (DS) as a Senior Special Agent. Prior to his government service, Dave served in various management positions for Walt Disney World Security, in Orlando, Florida. In his last position with the Department of State, Dave served as Director of the Diplomatic Security Training Center in Washington DC where he was responsible for the all Security, Engineering, and Law Enforcement training with the Bureau. Dave s other career highlights include: Protective Security for numerous Secretaries of State & Foreign Dignitaries: overseas assignments in Egypt, Sri Lanka, Finland, and Bangladesh; and oversight of the DS planning and coordination for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. In addition to developing and delivering various training solutions for DJBA & The Center for Personal Protection & Safety" (CPPS)--such as Workplace Violence Prevention, Self Defense, Executive Protection, Threat Assessment and Management Team training--dave spends an increasing amount of his time managing the DJBA Security Threat Assessment, Management & Mitigation program as well as the CPPS Threat Management Advisory Team (TMAT), Workplace Violence Prevention Program Review and other High Level Consulting Programs. In addition to several other professional organizations, Dave is a member in good standing of The Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP), currently serving as the Vice President of the Florida ATAP Chapter. Ryan Woods, MSA Captain, Santa Fe College Police Department Santa Fe College Captain Ryan Woods has been serving at Santa Fe College Police Department since 1998. Woods started as a Patrol officer, then worked in Human Resources as an Investigator (Sexual Harassment and Internal Affairs Complaints) then was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. In late 2016 Woods was promoted to the rank of Captain. Capt. Woods currently supervises three sergeants and the department s Office Supervisor. Ryan holds a Master of Science degree in Public Administration from the University of West Florida and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Leo University. Captain Woods is one of the founding members of the college s threat assessment team.
