Thomas Hancock, P 330-499-3660 thancock@neo.rr.com FROM THE COMMANDER Well, another month has gone by and that means just 5 more until launch time. (Cant Wait!) The SCPS Holiday dinner at Primaveras was a complete success. Once again the fellowship and conversation was very warming. A thanks to all who arranged and attended this special event. Please plan to attend the January meeting at the North Canton Acme. We will have chili and baked potato soup. Ken and Lynda Leque will give a presentation on their trip to Norway. (Origins of the Vikings, not the football team) From Peter s Humorous Sailing and Boa ng Defini ons (The following is used for article filler only, due to writers block) Buoy: Opposite of girlie or flying gull. Chart: 1) Large piece of paper that is useful in protecting cabin and cockpit surfaces from food and beverage stains. 2) Type of nautical map which tells you exactly where you are aground or what you just hit. Crew: Heavy, stationary objects used on shipboard to hold down charts, anchor cushions Cdr James J. Kosmos, AP in place and dampen sudden movements of the boom Dangerous Waters: Lying to your spouse. Dead Reckoning: 1) Course leading directly to a reef. 2) What a Southern Doctor pronounces after a sailor goes to Davy Jone's Locker. 3) Using a map instead of a chart. Dock: Where you take a sick boat. Dockline: Direct telephone access to a physician. Port: Fine red wine, always stowed on the left side of the boat. Give Way Vessel: The boat which, in a collision situation, did not have the right of way. Stand On Vessel: Vessel that in a collision was "in the right". If there were witnesses, the owner could bring an admiralty court case - known as a "wet suit" or a "leisure suit" - against the owner of the other boat, and if he proves "shiplash", he could collect a tidy sum. Skeg: What sea-going beer comes in. For more goto: http:// www.bluewatersailing.com/documents/ humorous-sail-definitions.pdf Have a Very Happy, Healthy, Safe and Prosperous New Year.

Long, P 1304 Washington Blvd. Louisville, OH 44641 Cell: 330-284-4991 email: clifflong@neo.rr.com FROM THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER Lt/C Kathy A Russell Wow, we are having crazy weather and I like crazy! Almost reaching the end of December and no accumulation of that white stuff! Best of all, I have hardly had to scrap my windows. This is really good, as I am not a morning person and don t have a minute to spare. Therefore, I am eternally grateful when I don t have to scrap the irritating thin layer of ice. There have been times when I scrapped the windows, start the drive to work and suddenly they are frosted up again! Four more days until Christmas and many people are wishing for a White Christmas. I can be jolly and enjoy Christmas without snow. Attending the Stark County Power Squadron Christmas party really got my Christmas spirit flowing. Primavera served us awesome food at the Stark County Power Squadron Christmas party. Tradition is everyone brings cookies to the party. I had strategically placed mine individually in pretty Christmas wrappers on trays and was pleased how they looked. Walked out the door and suddenly the trays slipped out of my hands and cookies flew everywhere! I can t even use ice or snow as an excuse, because we are having the crazy weather. The cookies are always good, but this year they were spectacular. Thanks to everyone for keeping the Christmas cookie tradition in place. I want to thank Linda Leque for making the arrangement with Primavera. We will soon be leaving 2015 and welcoming in 2016. I look forward to all the upcoming activities and especially the District 7 Spring Conference, TV s Greatest Hits of the 60s. Our squadron will make sure the Conference is the greatest of conferences! I apologize as my article is not one of my best. I woke-up and my eyes were plastered shut! A trip to Stat Care and waiting two hours led to a diagnosis of Pink Eye. The Pink Eye took a liking to me and did not want to leave me anytime soon! Better I get it now, then the conference weekend! JANUARY 2016 SCPS WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS! It is with pleasure that we welcome Matt Komara to our Squadron! Matt attended our December meeting, took our membership pledge, and received his member pin. Matt comes to us with a wealth of boating experience! He has earned his 100 ton license and is often called upon to Captain the Good Time II in Cleveland. He has also spent many summers operating TowBoat US in Cleveland. He is certified to teach safe boating through the ODNR and belongs to the Naval Militia out of Toledo. Matt is interested in taking our USPS Boating classes to learn more about our education program. We hope that Matt s experience with USPS and SCPS is a positive one! Next time you meet Matt be sure to welcome him and share some interesting boat talk with him! We are also pleased to welcome Dorothy Harris, who requested a transfer to SCPS from Palm Beach Power Squadron. She has been a USPS member since 2009 and has completed Seamanship and Piloting. She has decided to stay in Ohio this winter & plans to continue her boating education. Be sure to introduce yourself to Dorothy at one of our next events! AN EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME-NORWAY presented by Lynda & Ken Leque Attend our 7 January meeting and experience the magnificence of Norway! The Leques recently flew to England to board a Holland America cruise ship to sail across the North Sea and visit 4 southern ports in Norway. Their experience included meeting Norwegian family members and spending the day with them at 3 of the 4 ports. The Leque (Lekve) farm is still owned by family members in Ulvik on the Hardanger fjord, which was their final and most breathtaking destination. Lynda & Ken will narrate and present photos of their amazing trip. Join SCPS for a chili & soup dinner, brief meeting, and presentation on Norway! Tusen takk (thank you).
