International Student Orientation Fall 2015 Exchange Students Monday, August 24 8:30am 9:00pm Marquette Place, AMU 9:00 am 10:00 am Introductory Session Marquette Place, AMU Check-in for International Student Orientation 10:00 am 11:30 am Welcome and Schedule Overview Marquette Hall Welcome by the Office of International Education (OIE) staff Room 100 The Marquette Mission Identification Cards Dining Options Marquette Central & CheckMarq System Representatives from Marquette Central and the Office of the Registrar will discuss their services, demonstrate the CheckMarq system and how to navigate your account, monitor your academic progress and pay tuition and fees. 11:30 am 12:45 pm Lunch Join current students for lunch in Marquette Place or local restaurants. Please bring $8 to $10 for lunch purchase. ID Cards You may have time before or after lunch to stop at Union Station for your student ID card. You will need to provide identification (your passport) in order to receive your ID card. Visit Off-Campus Housing To receive help searching for an apartment, go to the Office of University Apartments and Off-Campus Student Services located in the Campus Town Apartments at 1500 W. Learn tips about how to study, make friends, and how to get involved in organizations or clubs. 4:00 pm 6:00 pm Free Time Meet in You can use this time to look for an apartment, open a bank account, buy Lobby your textbooks, obtain technical assistance from IT services, explore campus, or accomplish other related tasks. Student volunteers will be available to help. 5:00 pm 5:45 pm Campus Tour Meet at AMU Get to know Marquette on a campus tour with current students who know the Info Desk, 2 nd Floor university. Students can answer any questions you may have about the campus. 6:00 pm 8:00 pm Welcome Picnic and Games West Town Square Join OIE Staff, returning students, and new students for an evening of fun! (If raining, AMU West Town Square is located outside on the west side of the Alumni Marquette Place) Memorial Union (AMU), between the Union and McCormick Hall. Tuesday, August 25 9:00 am 10:30 am J-1 Regulations - MANDATORY for Exchange Students David Straz Hall Learn about federal regulations and how they apply to you as a student with a Room 105 J-1 visa. Ms. Susan Whipple will explain the federal regulations that you need to know. This session is mandatory for all J-1 visa students. Please bring your DS-2019, your passport, and any other document you received when you entered the U.S. We will also collect the green permanent record sheet that is included in your Orientation Booklet. On-Campus Employment and Social Security Numbers Thinking about working on campus? Learn about the process to get a job and apply for a Social Security Number (SSN). 11:00 am 12:30 pm Library Tour Raynor Library Meet the library reference staff and learn how to use the various database Room 245 systems that are available for research and coursework. Bring your MU ID card to enter the library. 1:00 pm 2:30 pm Sexuality and Safety in American Culture - MANDATORY for Undergraduate Men: Cudahy 114 & 137 and Exchange Students Women: Learn about important issues related to urban and campus living in the United Cudahy 118 & 120 States. This session will discuss issues related to personal safety to help you have a successful experience in the U.S. 3:00 pm 4:00 pm Apartment Living in the United States David Straz Hall Learn about your rights and responsibilities if you are renting an apartment in Room 105 Milwaukee. This session will provide: helpful information about apartment leases; tips for being a good tenant; ways to ensure your apartment is secure; and, overall suggestions about living in the Marquette neighborhood. Presented by Zack Wallace and Dr. Dan Bergen of Marquette s Office of Off-Campus Student Services. 5:00 pm 7:30 pm Shopping Meet at AMU Bus trip to a local discount store. Current students will join the trip to help 1 st Floor you shop for items such as cell phones, groceries, linens, electronics, and clothing. Wednesday, August 26 8:00 am Move in to Assigned Residence Hall All students who have been assigned on-campus housing in a residence hall can check in, receive keys, and move into their room. 10:00 am Temporary Housing Ends Students staying in Schroeder Hall s temporary housing must vacate the room and remove all belongings by 10:00am. 10:30 am 12:00 pm Exchange Student Orientation & Class Scheduling - MANDATORY All J-1 students who are part of the exchange program will have the opportunity to discuss academic matters and class scheduling. David Straz Hall Room 265 Business exchange students will meet with Dr. Jamshid Hosseini. OIE Program Center All other exchange students will meet with Ms. Karli Webster. Holthusen Hall, 4th Floor 12:00 noon Exchange Student Luncheon David Straz Hall Enjoy lunch with current students and faculty. Bring your MU ID card to enter the library. 3:00 pm 4:30 pm Wellness Staying Healthy & Health Insurance - MANDATORY Representatives from the Marquette Medical Clinic and Counseling Center will Room 111 explain how their services can keep you feeling healthy. You may bring any health forms to this session if you have not already given them to the Medical Clinic staff. Thursday, August 27 8:30 am 10:00 am Visit Marquette Medical Clinic Medical Clinic If you need to submit immunization records or have questions about completing Schroeder Health your health information in Next Steps, bring these items to the Medical Clinic. Complex The Medical Clinic is located in the lower level of Schroeder Health Complex 11:00 am 12:00 pm Tour the Rec Plex Rec Plex Learn how you can keep healthy by using the equipment and services provided Straz Tower by the Rec Plex, one of two recreation facilities open to all Marquette 915 W. Wisconsin Ave students. This facility offers separate training areas for men and women. Take the tour and receive the inside scoop on making the most of what this facility has to offer. Bring your MU ID card to enter the Rec Plex. 1:00 pm 2:00 pm Tour the Recreation Center Recreation Center The Recreation Center is the second of two recreation facilities. Tour the facility 525 N. 16 th Street to learn about intramural and club sports, special classes and other services. Bring your MU ID card to enter the Rec Center. 2:00 pm 4:00 pm Questions about your Academic Schedule - Exchange students David Straz Hall If you have final questions about your class schedule or other needs, you Room 101 may meet individually with an MU faculty or staff member during this time. This is also an opportunity for you to talk to us about any concerns you might have. 4:00 pm 6:00 pm OIE Welcome Back Event OIE Program Center Join OIE staff and students for this fun, annual event. Sample traditional Holthusen Hall, 4 th Floor Wisconsin foods while making new friends and reconnecting with students met during orientation. Roommates, Peer Mentors, friends and family members are all welcome to attend! 6:00 pm Restaurant Discovery Night Meet at Join a student host for dinner at a Milwaukee restaurant. Discover a Milwaukee OIE Program Center neighborhood while making new friends. Be sure to bring your UPass and MUID Holthusen Hall, 4 th Floor card or money for bus fare as well as money for your dinner. A list of restaurants will be available at the Welcome Back Event to help you choose which group to join. Groups will leave promptly at 6 pm.
