Personal Support Worker Program Thank you for your interest in our Personal Support Program! Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board has offered this program for the past three years. This document will provide you with an overview of the role of a personal support worker (PSW), the eligibility and requirements to be accepted into the program and the academic expectation. Take your time to read the information provided. We will be happy to answer your questions once you have read through this document.
Personal Support Worker (PSW) What is it? A PSW is a front line healthcare worker who assists clients with Activities of Daily Living The PSW supports clients with their personal hygiene, mobility, dietary and elimination needs. The PSW also supports the psychosocial and emotional needs of the client. As well: Be part of a health care team; provides compassionate and professional care to vulnerable individuals; positively influences individual and community growth. Home care and group home clients may also need assistance with household management including laundry, cleaning and meal preparation.
Specifically to provide: a. educational training that follows MOHLTC/OCSA standards; b. ethical and fair training for the adult learner; c. educational training programs that reflect individual workplaces; d. innovative programs that will contribute to local, regional and global collaboration;
Specifically to provide (continued) e. quality skills development programs that reflect the changing needs of the community; f. exceptional customer service that respects the dignity and individual needs and aspirations of the client; g. professional development opportunities for communities and organizations; h. career and transition assistance to assist individuals in meeting.
1. 21 years of age or older; Are you Eligible? 2. TB screening; two step Mantoux test (within 6 months) and X-Ray clearance within 3 months 3. Doctor s note indicating you are in good, record of your immunizations and Flu shot. 4. Clear Vulnerable Sector Police Clearance, prior to clinical placement. (within 6 months) 5. Mature and responsible attitude; and can follow direction 6. Show a sincere interest in working with the elderly/ disabled; 7. Have a professional attitude including a good work ethic understands the importance of reliability, teamwork and accountability

Attendance attending class every day is critical to the success and mandatory to complete the hours; Classes are 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday to Friday St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Learning Cente 3566 South Common Court, Mississauga, ON L5L 2B1 (By South Common Mall) 9. Literacy level adequate to complete all tests and assignments with at least 70% grade in all modules 10. Attend a mandatory Information Session. Eligibility (continued) 11. Proficiency in English (verbal /written/listening) 12. If English is not your first language you must have completed level 7 in ESL 13. Be physically able to meet the demands of this program and participate fully in practicums. 14. Proficient computer skills; word, PowerPoint presentations, and excel.
Literacy Component Learners must obtain 70% in all modules and 80% in safety, mobility and hygiene labs. Learners who obtain between 50% and 70% will receive the OSSD credit, but not for the PSW certification. Learners must be mature, dedicated, respectful and excellent attendance.
Schedule Theory Program Component Monday Friday, 9:30 a.m. 2:30 p.m. St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Learning Centre 3566 South Common Court, Mississauga, ON L5L 2B1 (By South Common Mall) -Theory on Site and some labs may be off site -Written tests, homework, study habits Co-op Placements Proof of Immunization, Criminal Check/Vulnerable Sector #1 Long Term Care 6:30 am start time. 8 hours at the placement. Monday- Friday #2 - Community Start time varies. 8 hours, Monday - Friday
Fees $1620.00 (Includes Textbook) Payment installments of $620.00, $500.00 and $500.00 Not included in this fee: 1. CPR/First Aid Standard Level HCP (Health Care Provider) Certificate. Student must arrange and complete before the program commences. i.e. St. John Ambulance, Red Cross, Heart and Stroke 2. Three original copies of a Vulnerable Sector Police Check In Peel Region: January 2018 $33.00 for adults over 25 years of age and $25.00 for seniors and ages 21-24 years of age continued on next page
Fees (continued) 3. Food Handling Course 4. A uniform (scrubs) 5. Shoes (no black soles and no mesh) 6. Immunizations; TB test, vaccines 7. Immunization record (cost to obtain from doctor) 8. Note from doctor; x-ray clearance
PSW Before you register for the mandatory information session do you meet the requirements? PSW Checklist: I am over the age of 21 I am mature, have a responsible attitude and show a sincere interest in working with the elderly / disabled; I meet the medical/health requirements; I meet the criminal/vulnerable check requirement; I have proficiency skills in computers; I am proficient in English (verbal /written/listening); If English is not your first language I meet the level 7 in ESL; I can meet the scheduled times for the classroom and co-op placements. I am able to pay the fees and costs of the program.
