SITE PROFILE CORNER BROOK Western Memorial Regional Hospital 1 Brookfield Avenue P.O. Box 2005 Corner Brook, NL A2H 6J7 709-637-5000 Site Information: Western Memorial Regional Hospital (WMRH), located in Corner Brook, is a one hundred and ninety two bed facility providing secondary services to the people of the Western region, approximately 82,000 people. The Health Services provided include: Medical Services Nursing Services Emergency Services Surgical Services Renal Care Pharmacy Services Laboratory Services Medical Imaging Emergency Services at WMRH are operational 24 hours a day and 7 days/week. All emergency patients are triaged upon arrival using Canadian Triage Acuity Scale (CTAS) guidelines that determine the level of urgency at which they are seen by the attending physician. The most critical patients are given the priority of care while less urgent patient may require longer waits.

At Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook, there is a Non-Emergency Outpatient clinic adjacent to the Emergency Department during evenings and weekends. This clinic is staffed by family practice physicians from the Corner Brook area. The hours of operation are: Monday to Friday from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM All staff that work in the Emergency Department are required to complete an in house orientation program as well as certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC). Surgical Services at Western Health are offered on a continuum care that commences in the surgeon s office. A wide range of specialty services are provided to the citizens of the Western region of Newfoundland which are available 24 hours per day and include: Anesthesia Dental Surgery Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery Gynecology Ophthalmology Orthopedic Surgery Urology Vascular Surgery The provision of quality surgical care is supported by a number of specialty programs and departments including: Pre-Admission Clinic Same Day Admission Surgery Operating Theatre and Recovery Room Day Surgery Unit Outpatient Procedure Rooms and Clinics The Renal Care Unit at Western Memorial Regional Hospital provides the following services: A Progressive Renal Insufficiency Program that is a comprehensive education and supportive care for clients with chronic kidney disease. A 15 station Hemodialysis Unit which provides hemodialysis for both stable and unstable clients. Transient Hemodialysis based on approval by the Nephrologist & availability of space. The hours of operation are 0800 to 2100 hrs Monday through Saturday with emergency standby services when the Hemodialysis Unit is closed. A Peritoneal Dialysis that provides comprehensive education and supportive care for clients with stage five kidney disease who have chosen peritoneal dialysis as their replacement therapy. A Kidney Transplant Program that provides ambulatory clinic follow-up care of clients who have received transplanted kidneys. This program also performs and monitors necessary testing for clients with stage five kidney disease who request cadaver or living related kidney transplantation and performs and monitors necessary testing for related /non related donors for live donor kidney transplantation.

The Pharmacy Department of WMRH states the following objectives for their department: Procure and store an adequate inventory of drugs, as approved by the Regional Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, for use by physicians and other hospitals, nursing homes, and medical clinics in the Western Health Care Region. Dispense, distribute and control all drugs issued to patients, nursing units and other hospital departments as per Federal, Provincial and Accreditation regulations. Represent pharmacy on all hospital committees concerned with drug therapy, patient education, patient care planning, medical and drug standards and safety. Confer with all the professional, paramedical groups and others who have an interest in patient care. Maintain an adequate drug information library and provide information to the physicians, nurses, other paramedical staff, and patients in the region. Provide sound fiscal management of the resources available. Direct the functions of the Western Memorial Regional Poison Control Center. To improve patient quality of life through the implementation of pharmaceutical care, when an individual pharmacist takes responsibility for an individual patient s drug therapy. Specifically, this involves identifying potential or actual drug related problems, resolving actual drug related problems, and preventing potential drug-related problems. The Laboratory, EKG and EEG personnel at Western Health are dedicated to our clients, patients and medical staff. We strive to give healthcare providers pertinent medical data in a timely, accurate, and meaningful manner, to ensure the best possible care for all patients. Western Health provides laboratory services in specific divisions such as Procurement (Blood Collection), Pathology, Cytology/Histology, Hematology, Coagulation, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Immunochemistry, Microbiology, EKG, and EEG. No appointment is necessary for Procurement (Blood Collection) services. Appointments are required for EKG and EEG services and are booked through a physician s office. A requisition from a physician is required. MCP or other provincial healthcare cards must be presented upon registration. All specimens submitted to the laboratory must have a requisition and the specimen must be labeled with the patients name, MCP # or Healthcare #, as well as date and time of collection. Medical Imaging encompasses a broad variety of procedures and specialized tests that help physicians to diagnose disease. Services provided by Medical Imaging include: General Radiography (X-ray) Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) Computerized Tomography (CAT Scan) Interventional Radiography (includes Angiography) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Mammography (Diagnostic/Routine) Nuclear Medicine Ultrasound (Including: Echocardiography, Vascular Studies and Small Parts Ultrasound) The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at WMRH serves as the referral unit for critically ill patients throughout the Western Region. Comprehensive care is provided to adult medical and surgical patients, pediatrics and other patients that require a higher level of support. The 8 bed unit has private rooms that have the capability of a full range of cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring. The unit is also responsible for the cardiac monitoring of 12 telemetry patients located in other inpatient units in the hospital.

Nursing staff who work in ICU must complete an in house training program or must possess equivalent training and experience from another facility. ICU nurses also receive advanced training in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). All accommodations have a shared living room, bathroom and kitchen. They are clean, well-kept units that are within a less than 5 minute walking distance of WMRH 2. Delta House (located in the parking lot of the Hospital) 5 bedrooms in total with a shared living room, 2 ½ bathrooms and kitchen. This unit has recently been refurnished and is a convenient living space as it is located less than a minute walk from the hospital. 3. 75 West Valley Road 5 bedrooms in total with a shared living room, 2 full bathrooms and kitchen. This unit is located less than a 5 minute walk from WMRH with convenient living arrangements. 2 of the 5 are reserved for students with the CSAT program.

Upon your arrival please pick up your keys at Switchboard at WMRH. At that time you will be provided a Registration Form that must be signed and given back to the Switchboard Operator. Attached to this form is an envelope which contains room and house keys as well as important documentation. It is recommended that while you are at Switchboard that you also take the time to pick up your beeper for your rotation. Meals are available in the cafeteria at WMRH at regular cafeteria prices.
