I m convinced that, as Iowans, we have to have a very short memory, because every year we don t remember it being so cold! One of the great things about living in the Midwest is the change of seasons, the only down fall of that is it seems to me that the calendar moves way to quickly! This month marks my third year of service at Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging. It has been three years of amazing experience, great challenges, and building wonderful relationships. In the bigger picture, 2014 also marks my 20th year working in the human services field. Through all of the years and across all of the different services one thing has always remained consistent: The amazing employees and volunteers! Nowhere has the importance of volunteers been more pronounced for me than here at NEI3A. Whether it s helping to serve thousands of meals, assisting in driving folks to doctor s appointments, or visiting seniors that live far from family, the volunteers make up the true heart of this organization. The support that volunteers provide throughout the 18 counties of NEI3A goes far beyond the call of duty. The only way that NEI3A is able to provide the services and supports is through these amazing, caring, and committed volunteers. On behalf of NEI3A and all of the people that we serve, I would like to thank each and every person that volunteers on behalf of seniors and families in northeast Iowa. As Dr. Seuss said, Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It s not! At NEI3A, volunteers play a vital role in helping us to live out our mission to empower older individuals to remain independent and in their homes for as long as they desire. Volunteers help to deliver hot nutritious meals, present information about potential scams, or help out in the Healthy Lifestyles/Senior Centers. The time and talents donated by our dedicated volunteers is immeasurable. We truly appreciate everything our volunteers do each and every day to help their communities. During the month of April we are saying Thanks! To help celebrate and show our appreciation to our thousands of volunteers, recognition events have been planned in the 18 counties we serve. A complete listing of events and dates can be found on page 5. If you are a volunteer be sure to attend one of these fun events. If not new volunteers are always welcome and needed! You can volunteer once a week or once a month - whaterver works for you! For more information about volunteering call 1-800-779-8707. It is important to be prepared for a weather emergency. Be Aware of Approaching Weather: One important item to have in every household is a NOAA Weather Radio. The NOAA Weather Radio receives National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts, and other hazard information 24 hours a day. There is also a special-needs NOAA Weather Radio that is designed to adapt to the needs of the deaf and people who are hard-of-hearing by providing visual and vibrating alarms. Prepare a Home Tornado Plan: Pick a place where family members can go if a tornado is headed your way. If you are able to get to your basement, that is the best place. Otherwise, pick a center hallway, bathroom, or closet on the lowest floor for protection. Have Your Emergency Supplies Ready: Be ready for an emergency by putting together an emergency kit. Page 4 April 2014 NEIghborhood News Iowa Senior Medicare Patrol/Consumer Protection Division Deb Yankey, Iowa SMP Coordinator Iowa Financial Scam Attempts Iowa Senior Medicare Patrol has received reports of these scam attempts occurring in Iowa now. Recorded calls say they are from your credit card company, that your card has been blocked or deactivated and asks you to punch a number on your phone to connect to speak to someone. The person who received this call verified with their credit card bank that they did not call her. If you punch a number during a recorded call you might be directed to an international location and receive a big charge on your phone bill or your phone number may go on a list indicating you are likely to fall for a scam and that list will be bought and sold over and over again. Read on.. Caller tells you that your name and number were found in a database that scammers use to find victims. The caller didn t try to obtain personal information on the phone but suggested the person who received the call should check out a website to learn more. This is very suspicious; if you visit a website given to you under these circumstances, it might install a virus on your computer. An e-mail arrived that looks like it came from someone you know. The message states that they are stranded or in a crisis away from home and need you to wire money to help them. Some of these scams are new themes and some are old ones. Here are the tips For the first story about the credit card, you should hang up the call, find your records for the phone number of your credit card company and call them to ask if there s a problem with your account. For the second story about getting a warning call that advises you to go to your computer and look at a website, you should not go to websites that you don t know or that are given to you by a stranger. For the third story about the emergency e-mail, you should contact someone else who knows the person whose name is on the e-mail and ask if your acquaintance is out of town and in trouble. And you should never wire money when you can t confirm that the need is legitimate. There is almost no chance that you will ever get your money back. You should tell your local police or sheriff when these scam attempts happen so they can warn others in your community or file a report if you become a victim. You should also consider filing complaints with other authorities like the Iowa Attorney General, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Internet Crime Complaint Center. Contact Iowa Senior Medicare Patrol for a brochure that lists this contact information; call us at 1-800- 423-2449. Senior Expo May 14 Caring For Each Other Brenda Schmitt and Barb Wollan- Family Finance Specialists- Iowa State University Extension Rose turned to Harry with a wry smile. Remember a couple weeks ago when I was worried about Myrtle falling, and wondering if she should be living alone? Her husband nodded. Well I just tripped on the rug and nearly fell myself for the second day in a row! I need to replace that rug it s a hazard. I wonder what other hazards we have around here? It s funny how we sometimes worry about other people without even noticing things we should be concerned about for ourselves! Fortunately, Rose got a wakeup call without sustaining any injuries. Falls in and around the home are a top cause of injuries to older adults. Older adults also are at greater risk than others of dying in a house fire. Many of these and other injuries result from hazards that are easy to overlook, but also easy to fix. By spotting these hazards and taking simple steps to correct them, you can prevent injuries to yourself or visitors to your home. Here are a few considerations for a safe home: Floors. Make sure floors and carpets are flat and without obstructions, with no loose edges to trip you up. Avoid using throw rugs in traffic areas, and where you do use throw rugs, be sure they have excellent non-slip backing. Cords. Electrical cords should never extend across walkways. Instead, rearrange furniture and run cords for lamps and other items along the walls. Thresholds. Remove or replace any threshold higher than ½ inch. Lighting. Make sure walking areas are well-lit, including stairways. Install light switches next to the entrance of each room and at both the top and bottom of stairways, to prevent any need to walk in the dark. Kitchen. Have a fire extinguisher and know how to use it. Keep curtains, towels and other flammable items away from the range. Ensure good lighting and avoid high-glare surfaces. Use a sturdy stepstool with a handrail if you must climb for items stored above your reach. Bathrooms. Make sure floor is slip-resistant even when wet, and use a nonskid mat in the bathtub or shower. Keep electrical items (razor, blow dryer) unplugged when not in use, and away from water. To improve home safety and stay independent, get started with the suggestions above. More-detailed home safety checklists are available from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (http://www.cpsc.gov// PageFiles/122038/701.pdf) and from North Carolina State University Extension (http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/ depts/fcs/pdfs/fcs-461. pdf) Wednesday, May 14 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Best Western PLUS Hotel 3100 Dodge Street, Dubuque This is your opportunity to learn about senior housing options and support services available in Dubuque.
