HELPING BABIES BREATHE The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in conjunction with the University of New Mexico s Amazing Newborns Conference is offering a Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) Master Trainer course November 4-5, 2017. HBB is an evidence-based educational program to teach neonatal resuscitation techniques in resource-limited countries. It is an initiative of the AAP in collaboration with the World Health Organization, USAID, and a number of other global health partners. HBB teaches the initial steps of neonatal resuscitation to give a much better start to many babies who struggle to breathe at birth. HBB has been shown to reduce neonatal mortality by up to 47% and fresh stillbirths by 24%. This 1.5 day course will equip participants with the skills necessary to teach this lifesaving curriculum to birth attendants in resource-limited countries. For more information and to register visit hbs.aap.org/courses.

CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION The 26th Annual Amazing Newborns Conference titled Critical Curiosities Today and Tomorrow presents the opportunity for neonatal caregivers to learn about conditions ranging from neonatal infection risk to identifying and responding to surgical emergencies. This year s conference will also host the first Annual New Mexico Neonatal Consortium, a collaborative project that brings the ideas and resources of Neonatologists, critical care nurses, respiratory therapy, and all members of the care team together to help improve the healthcare of all babies born in New Mexico. CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this conference, the participant should be able to: 1. Apply concepts of infection recognition and treatment in the neonatal period. 2. Summarize what the medical community can do to help protect neonates from harm through parent education and proper reporting of suspected abuse. 3. Identify what represents a surgical emergency and the common treatment for stabilizing a neonate prior to surgical intervention.
