History Jack M. Goldman was born 31 Jul 1925 in Decataur, IL. He graduated from Decataur High School in 1943 and briefly attended James Millikin University before enlisting in the 173 rd Combat Engineer Batallion in Sept 1943. After returning from military duty, Goldman went on to graduate from the University of Illinois at Champaign in 1951. He came to Detroit in 1951, where he worked as a junior architect at Smith Hinchman Grylls on the GM Tech Center project. From 1955-1958, Goldman worked for Eero Saarinen and Associates, except for a six month period in 1957 when he received the Francis J. Plym Fellowship to travel abroad and study European architecture. Goldman later was a principal in Fields, Goldman and Magee Architects in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Significant projects on which Goldman worked include: GM Tech Center (Warren, MI), Concordia Senior College (Ft. Wayne, IN), Deere and Company Administrative Center (Moline, IL), Milwaukee County War Memorial (Milwaukee, WI), the Miller House (Columbus, IN), the Women s Dormitory at the University of Chicago, and the competition for the U.S. Embassy in London. Scope and Content of Collection The collection has been arranged alphabetically by name of project. Box 1 consists primarily of news articles about various projects, but also contains program information and correspondence on the London Embassy project. Box 2 (Oversize) contains concept sketches for Deere & Company and the London Embassy, as well as some presentation boards on other projects.
