Math Consortia February 17, 2015 10 am 1:30 pm Central Georgia Technical College, Macon The meeting began with a welcome from Dr. Benita Moore, Curriculum Program Specialist at TCSG. Chair Emily Phillips was unable to attend because of a death in her family. Dr. Bee Hart (Southeastern) and Mr. David Brown (Oconee Fall Line) agreed to preside in her absence. Alysen Heil (Athens Tech) was unable to attend because of weather, so Dr. Hicks, Wilhelmina (Central GA) agreed to take minutes for the meeting. The list of attendees is included at the end of the minutes. Dr. Hart followed with an additional welcome. Attendees were asked to review and approve the minutes from 2014 Consortium Meeting. Lynne Groover offered a motion to approve the minutes from 2014 Consortium Meeting. Motion was seconded and the minutes were approved as written and distributed. Dr. Hart divided the 45 attendees into sections based on class courses. The objective was to review the courses, share successes and concerns, and recommend any changes that need to be made to the courses. The group reassembled and discussed the recommended changes and concerns (see list below). Further announcements Dr. Hart asked to consider local consortium meetings or to use the list serve as an avenue to review and discuss curriculum changes. The consensus of the group was that the list serve is an effective means of communicating with other math instructors. It was noted that instructors should use the math list serve, but should use it with tact and good judgment. It is not appropriate to use the

math list serve when you want to send an email to an individual person but when you have a question or comment for the entire group or a large portion of the group. Prior to lunch, the four vendors present provided a brief introduction of their organization. During the working lunch, the following vendors were present and available for instructors to talk with during lunch. The vendors reported that they were very pleased with the visits and contacts during lunch. Cengage Learning Glenda Blake Cengage Learning Zina Craft Cengage Learning Shaun Thomas Cengage Learning Andrea Kesterke Educo International, Inc Elton Hugee XanEdu Barbara Robinson After lunch, Dr. Benita Moore Highlighted how to access the Academic Affairs Web Page Explained the importance of the workload unit (WLU) in KMS for adjuncts Prerequisite Change Approved A change in prerequisite for the following MATH courses was made: MATH 1011/1012/1100/1101/1111. There was a motion and second and it was approved to change the prerequisite as follows: The current prerequisite for each course is listed as MATH 0097, MATH 0098, and/or have no mention of LS exit point. The proposed and approved prerequisite will be Appropriate Placement Test Score or Appropriate Learning Support Exit Point. There was discussion but the group believed the new wording would reflect current practice and still give colleges the flexibility needed.

Additional Comments and Questions from Attendees Question about increasing tuition Tuition changes are made by the State Board. Colleges have the ability to add lab fees to address the issue of access codes being included in the tuition. Question about scheduling and how to schedule low enrollment courses Dr. Moore stated that each college determines course load and how to handle low enrollment courses; participants shared how they are handling low enrollment courses. Some colleges are combining courses while others are allowing fulltime instructors to teach an additional course. Suggestion about Career Applications instructors stated that including relevant/career application made concepts easier for students to understand. Math software it was noted that the software used at the college was determine by the college/instructor. Having the vendors available during lunch allowed instructors to find out what is available. Next Meeting Our next MATH meeting will probably be during Spring semester next year. Any changes to courses will be discussed via email unless it is deemed that a meeting is needed prior to Spring 2016. Dr. Moore stated that spring breaks begin at TCSG colleges during the first week in March and continue until the second week in April, so it would be hard to have a statewide meeting much later than February to include all colleges. Dr. Moore asked for feedback regarding vendors. The meeting adjourned around 1:30 pm. Though election of officers was on the agenda, the election was postponed until next spring because much of the north part of the state was unable to attend the meeting due to weather/ice-snow storms. The current officers will continue to serve until next year. If one of the

officers is unable to continue serving, he/she will notify Dr. Moore and she will work on a replacement. Below is a summary of the changes to the MATH courses. The following courses have no recommended changes. Learning Support No Changes MATH 1013 No Changes MATH 1015 No Changes MATH 1017 No Changes MATH 1112 No Changes MATH 1131 No Changes MATH 1132 No Changes The following courses have recommended changes as indicated. Math 1011 Prerequisite Change - The current prerequisite for each course is listed as MATH 0097, MATH 0098, and/or have no mention of LS exit point. The approved prerequisite will be MATH 1012 Enhance the course by Adding integers and basic linear equations (one or two steps) this can be either be embedded under the technical applications or by adding a separate competency. Also, prerequisite change. The current prerequisite for each course is listed as MATH 0097, MATH 0098, and/or have no mention of LS exit point. The approved prerequisite will be MATH 1100 - Prerequisite change. The current prerequisite for each course is listed as MATH 0097, MATH 0098, and/or have no mention of LS exit point. The approved prerequisite will be MATH 1101 - Prerequisite change. The current prerequisite for each course is listed as MATH 0097, MATH 0098, and/or have no mention of LS exit point. The approved prerequisite will be MATH 1111 Make two topics optional and add two topics. Make these two topics optional topics o Solve quadratic inequalities o Solve rational inequalities Add these two topics to required topics o Solve rational equations

o Solve radical equations Prerequisite change. The current prerequisite for each course is listed as MATH 0097, MATH 0098, and/or have no mention of LS exit point. The approved prerequisite will be MATH 1113 - Omit standards 2, 3, and 5 under complex numbers. These are not necessary for pre-calculus. MATH 1127 no changes but suggestions for resources: khanacademy.org (excellent for all ages and not only math!)... it is best if instructor starts a class in khan and then asks his students to register in the class. This enables strong accountability not only for the professor (because the prof will see progress with videos watched and problems completed) but also with emails being sent to the students if there is not sufficient progress, khanacademy.org is always free. MS Excel. Early in the 1127 entire class is spent on MS Excel basics. Specific homework and some take home problems to be done on Excel (statistics, graphs, regression, etc. are provided. Youtube: A series of videos "2013 Statistical Analysis" are excellent. Can be used in class and students are encouraged to watch outside of class also. These videos start with the very basics of Excel 2013 and moves forward showing the functionality and capabilities of the software. Bureau of Labor and Statistics is a great resource for databases and analyses. NOTE: the group only voted on was the prerequisite change to the following courses (MATH 1011, 1012, 1100, 1101, 1111). The other changes will be reviewed and colleges/instructors will be notified on the process. Below is a list of attendees.
