FLIGHT CAPTAIN S CORNER Greetings fellow Daedalians. Summer is right around the corner and many of us are looking forward to vacations and spending time with friends and family. We had an excellent meeting in April at the Bayshore Club, where we recognized the outstanding JROTC cadets from our local high schools (see photos). It was a great group of young people, parents and friends. In addition to recognizing the Outstanding Cadets, our Scholarship Chairman, Bob Buhrow presented the Military Sponsors with a check for $600 which we provide to support the JROTC program. We (Cont. on page 2)
(Cont. from page 1) also were able to recognize one of our Daedalian Flight Scholarship (DFS) program students who successfully completed her solo flight in early January. Cadet Sierra Legendre talked about her training and expressed her thanks to our Flight for providing her the opportunity to learn to fly. It is very gratifying to see the enthusiasm exhibited by all these young people who are just beginning their pursuit of a career. It is also exciting to see how proud their parents are of their accomplishments. The evening was highlighted by the performance of Dwayne Langston, a Country/Western song writer and true patriot. Dwayne performed several songs he wrote and ended his performance by singing one of his latest songs The One, a very patriotic song that honors the one percent of Americans who volunteer to serve in the US Military (available on line at www. reverbnation.com/ dwaynelangston). We also enjoyed a wonderful meal at the Bayshore Club. It s good to have them back in business. Looking forward to our meeting in May, we have tentatively scheduled MSG Ted Arthurs, USA (Ret) to speak to us about his experiences in the 173rd Airborne Brigade during the early years of fighting in Vietnam. There are several local speakers we are trying to line up for this summer so keep the third Thursday of each month open on your schedules and plan to join us. On a sad note, we acknowledged the Last Flight of Byron Slip Spears who was over 100 years old and one of our WWII veterans. Ron Hamilton presented a special tribute to this great American. Thanks for your service.
