International Scholar Exchange Fellowship International Scholar Exchange Fellowship 203-204 The International Scholar Exchange Fellowship(ISEF) program aims to enhance academic exchange and cooperation among international scholars by providing them with an opportunity to visit and stay in Korea for one year(or six months) to conduct research. This program was implemented in 999, and began supporting scholars in early 2000. The first to twelfth cohorts of the ISEF laureates, totaling 629 scholars from Asian countries such as China, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Philippines, Russia, Thailand, and Vietnam, have safely returned to their home countries after successfully completing their research in Korea. The thirteenth cohort, the ISEF laureates for 202-203, consisting of forty-seven scholars from Cambodia, China, India, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia and Vietnam safely arrived in Korea this past August. They have successfully embarked upon, and are currently conducting their proposed research in collaboration with their host scholars at nine major universities and research institutions in Korea. Recently, the West has shown a growing sense of awareness in traditional Asian culture and ideas through their reflection on Western civilization. As evidenced by such development, Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies believes that, in the 2 st century, Arrival of the 202-203 ISEF Laureates 6 International Scholar Exchange Fellowship 203-204

To this end, the Foundation is inviting qualified scholars from other countries and supporting them to conduct research at leading universities or research institutions in Korea. The fellowship brings a select number of scholars every year to Korea. The number of fellowship laureates vary from year to year. The fellowship provides comprehensive research expenses, which includes a research stipend, initial settlement support, publication support, round-trip airfare, and overseas travellers insurance. During the fellowship period in Korea, the laureates enjoy full access to the Foundation s facilities, such as seminar rooms and the library to help them conduct their research. Currently, this program focuses only on scholars from Asia, the Middle East, the Far East, and we are interested in inviting outstanding scholars in the fields of humanities, social sciences, petrochemical engineering, electrical engineering (electronic science), telecommunications, computer science and life science. Following the Foundation s tradition of honoring the freedom of scholarship, researchers are given the freedom of choosing research subjects within the given fields. The Foundation screening panel only considers the quality of stated research proposals in selecting the fellowship laureates, not their research subjects. In order to enhance understanding of Korean language, culture and society, the Foundation organizes Korean language classes and seminars, as well as trips to various cultural sites, industrial facilities, and academic/research institutions for the ISEF laureates.
