Concurrent Workshops Workshop I: Monday, October 7, 10:15 a.m. 11:30 a.m. #1 Reaching Common Language About At-Risk Student-Athletes: Tier Structure Christi Turner, North Carolina State University and Ted White, University of Georgia The presenters will share how they use the Graduation Risk Overview (GRO) tool developed by the NCAA to help identify student-athletes potential barriers to graduation with several factors taken into consideration. The presentation will include the risk factors that have the greatest impact on a student-athlete s likelihood of graduating. The tier structure can help institutions categorize their student-athlete population by risk so staff can design the most effective support plan for each individual. #2 Leveraging Student-Athletes Strengths of Competition for Success Outside of Sport Joanna Smith, Virginia Tech After conducting the Strengths Finder assessment with a group of first year student athletes, it was discovered that each student had competition as one of their top strengths. This same group of student athletes credited competition as the secret to their success. This discovery begs the question, in what ways can competition bring about success outside of sport, as the concept of strengths speak to the ability to be successful in all areas of life. #3 Mobile Advising: Partnering with Campus Advisors Justin Johnson and J.R. Pulido, University of Arkansas This session will take an in depth look at an advising program currently used at the University of Arkansas. It involves collaborating efforts with various college advisors to make the advising process more efficient for student-athletes, academic advisors, and athletic department staff. The background and process of the program will be explored, along with ways to incorporate on your campus. #4 Academic Integrity Collaboration and Education is the Key Joe Rehder, University of Virginia and Megan Albidrez, North Carolina State University This presentation will take a look at the programming that has been put in place at the University of Virginia and NC State to educate student-athletes on academic integrity. There will be a specific focus on the relationship with the Honor Committee at UVa and the Office of Student Conduct at NC State. Workshop II: Monday, October 7, 3:00 p.m. 4:15 p.m. #5 Developing Self-Regulated Learners: Helping Student-Athletes Choose Appropriate Learning Techniques Bradley Bethel, Latasha Woods, Tara Anderson, Jessica Keroack and Megan McVea, University of North Carolina Choosing appropriate learning strategies and techniques is a critical aspect of successful learning. Underprepared studentathletes most likely do not know many learning techniques or when to use those techniques. Fortunately, recent research provides practical insight into the effectiveness of several learning techniques. This presentation will suggest researchinformed methods of teaching student-athletes how to choose appropriate learning techniques for successful learning. #6 Leadership Development and Service-Learning Danny White and Reyna Gilbert-Lowry, Virginia Tech For the second consecutive year, Virginia Tech student-athletes enrolled in a Summer I Global Citizenship course. This course, with a pedagogical focus on service-learning, bridged leadership theory with thoughtful service to the youth in

Veron, Dominican Republic. The course was designed to allow student-athletes the opportunity to experience crosscultural immersion through study abroad and to enhance the study abroad experience through experiential learning with a specific focus in service-learning. This presentation will provide an overview and background of the development of this course along with information for other universities considering study abroad courses for their student athlete population. #7 How to Build Your Own Summit on Student-Athlete Success Jermaine Holmes and Dr. Kimberly Smith, Virginia Tech Recent decades have brought much discussion about academics and intercollegiate athletics. The dialogue on this topic is complex and often infringes on the ability of institutions to assist student athletes in achieving both their academic and athletic goals. Hence, it is important that institutions of higher education advance approaches that explicate the magnitude of issues related to student athlete success. The goals of developing a Summit include but not limited to the following: meet one another; to engage interested University constituents in a discussion of academic success for student athletes; to create an understanding of the relationships between various University academic policies and NCAA policies and procedures; and to identify strategies for effective communication throughout the University community. #8 US Marine Corps: Leadership and Character Building for Your Team Major Seth MacCutcheon, United States Marine Corps and Danita Townsend, Savannah State University The Marine Corps is the premier leadership development organization in the world, and we have time and battle tested methods of teaching and developing leaders within any team and for any mission. Our goal is to provide our experience and a unique training environment for your team, Captains, and student-athletes, to develop them as people, competitors, students, and leaders. This program is designed to give all audience members an understanding of what the Marine Corps can offer their University, College, or team, with respect to leadership development. Our program will lay-out typical end states that have been sought by teams, target audiences, teaching techniques, a menu of what we can do and have done, and finally the logistics requirements for each event/package (which are minimal and free of cost to the institution). We will also provide a list of contact information for the Marine Officers in their area that will be the coordinators of their school s training. Workshop III: Tuesday, October 8, 9:30 a.m. 10:45 a.m. #9 Agents, Academic Support, and African American Studies: Perspectives During an NCAA Investigation Beth Bridger and Chancel Miller, University of South Carolina In the world of college athletics, the news of an impending NCAA investigation can have a tremendous impact on your life, professionally and personally. Have you ever wondered what actually happens during an NCAA investigation? Professionals associated with the NCAA and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill share insight and lessons learned from this high profile case. Is there light at the end of the NCAA Investigation tunnel? #10 Return Objectives Nick Jones and Ted White, University of Georgia Objective-based support is often based entirely upon a student s willingness and ability to complete specific tasks within limited blocks of time. What happens when time runs out before task completion? Return Objectives were developed to help students who need additional time and/or encouragement to complete tasks and stay on track, while facilitating self-directed, independent learning and accountability. #11 Pennies, Nickels and Dimes: A Thriving Student-Athlete Development Program on a Budget Morgaine Godwin, Matt Anthony and Courtney Huffman, Liberty University Student-Athlete Development Programs are commonly viewed as costly, ineffective or unnecessary. Setting up events, connecting with campus resources and getting community involvement can seem daunting. Through this seminar, helpful tools, resources, and suggestions will be given to make reaching your ultimate goals effective, rewarding, and fun for all involved.
