T O L E D O O R E G O N Department Report August 2016 A Party With A Purpose National Night Out 2016 By Jovita Ballentine, Dispatcher/Toledo Explorer Advisor Police Cars! Fire Trucks!...and a horse!?!!? Oh MY!!! The vehicles were polished, the equipment was tested and ready to be displayed. Friendships were formed over burgers and snow cones at Toledo s National Night Out, held on August 2nd, 2016 at Toledo Head Start. With education and community enrichment in mind, members of our Public Safety engaged with those they serve on a daily basis answering questions and much needed one on one facetime in an environment without crisis. This opportunity provided community members powerful insight on who? and what? is necessary to keep our community safe and healthy. Personnel from Toledo Police Department and Post 30 Explorers, Toledo Fire and Rescue, Public Works, PacWest Ambulance, Oregon Department of Transportation and multiple departments of the Lincoln County Sheriff s Office (Search and Rescue, Marine Patrol, Animal Services and the Mounted Posse) volunteered their time and expertise in the quest to foster and strengthen positive relationship with those they serve. The Yaquina Pacific Railroad Historical Train Society provided complimentary train rides several with McGruff the Crime Dog. Adding to the fun - several lucky participants won door prizes (bicycles, helmet and toys) donated by Santa s Workshop and the Merry Elves. Members of Toledo s Food Pantry provided information about the services it provides to the community. New to the event this year, representatives of local Cub and Boy Scout Troops hosted demonstrations and provided recruitment information. Complimentary BBQ, refreshments and snow cones were provided through donations from Dahl and Dahl Family, JC Market, Big Foot (continued page 2) 1 ADMINISTRATION The City Recorder s Office assisted with recruitment for the following positions: Assistant Library Director; Maintenance Worker IV; and City Manager Pro-Tem. Nancy Bryant provided orientation for one police officer, one Maintenance Worker III and one Lifeguard. Melodi McGee processed (3) Outdoor Event Permits. The Recorder s Office completed the recruitment for one vacant position on City Council. The Recorder s office completed the filing period for the November General Election. The following people have filed for candidacy: Mayor Billie Jo Smith (incumbent); City Council Jackie Kauffman (incumbent), Stephen Burdick, Joshua Smith, Deanne Dunlap and Ralph Grutzmacher. Melodi McGee completed thorough maintenance of the City of Toledo website, following the transfer to a new hosting server. Melodi McGee attended OSHA Safety Committee training and OSHA Safety Leadership training in Salem, OR.

Toledo Police and Public Safety wish to extend heartfelt appreciation for all those involved and who make this event possible - the volunteers, Toledo s Head Start (use of building and utilities) and contributors. Community engagement is an important part of creating a great city. Each year, the Toledo Police Department participates in National Night Out and provides the opportunity for residents to not only meet the members of local public safety entities and learn crime prevention and disaster preparedness techniques, but also meet their neighbors, strengthen community ties and promote a better Toledo. City Manager s Message By Craig Martin, City Manager Pro-Tem Greetings! I would like to thank everyone for their warm welcome and assistance during my first two weeks as City Manager Pro Tem for the community of Toledo. As you can imagine the first two weeks of time here have literally flown by as I have been scrambling to get up to speed on the many projects programs and excellent services the City has in full swing during this busy time of the year. I truly appreciate everyone s patience and support, especially all the City staff during my transition from my previous community to the vibrant community Toledo. In addition to my duties as City Manager Pro Tem, I am also currently filling some of the duties of the Public Works Director, which gives me the added benefit of and working directly with all the great Public Works staff until a replacement Public Works Director is secured. Something I hope to accomplish in the near future. Toledo Swimming Pool By Stephanie Frenock & Mereline Schneidecker, Pool Managers Summer Swimming Lessons The summer swim lesson program finished on August 25th. We had another fantastic summer program with all lesson sessions being full the entire summer. Leak at the Swimming Pool On Friday August 26th a person walking along the street noticed water bubbling up out of the ground where the pool s water meter is located. The passerby reported the leak. Pool staff, Facilities and Public works responded to resolve the issue. Lincoln plumbing was dispatched and the leak was repaired. The pool was able to continue regularly scheduled operations the following morning. Volunteers Needed The pool welcomes volunteers. Volunteers need to fill out an application and complete a background check. If you are interested in volunteer opportunities at the Toledo Swimming Pool please feel free to call 3 In the meantime I would like to extend an invitation to the community members, City Council and City Committee members as well as any staff I have not had the opportunity to meet, to feel free to contact me either in person or phone, especially if we have not yet had a chance to meet. I am working full time so usually available almost anytime during the week for you to call or stop by City Hall and converse about matters important to Toledo s success. I look forward to my time here as your Pro Tem Manager and helping the Community of Toledo progress towards its collective goals and aspirations. Swim Team Seeking Swim Coach Toledo High School has a large number of students that would like to have a swim team again this year. They are currently looking for a swim team coach. If you are interested or know someone that would like to coach the swim team, please call the Toledo High School and speak to the Assistant Principal/Athletic director, Adam Strachan at 541-336-5104. Annual Maintenance On Friday September 2nd the pool will begin it's annual maintenance shut down. The pool will be shut down for two weeks to do some minor repairs, cleaning and organizing etc. The pool will reopen on Monday September 19th on the Fall schedule. The updated fall schedule will be posted on the city's website.
Toledo Police Department By Dave Enyeart, Police Chief New Police Officer Michael Henderson Toledo Police and Public Safety welcome new patrol officer Michael Henderson. Before joining Toledo Police Michael was a corrections officer with Warm Springs and Jackson County. Henderson a 2006 graduate of Newport High School is excited to return to Lincoln County and continue his career in Law Enforcement. Officer Henderson began his Field Training on August 22, 2016 and is scheduled to attend the Police Academy in Salem Oregon in December 2016. Welcome Officer Henderson!!! Toledo Public Safety Memorial Garden With the assistance of the Public Works Department, the fish pond outside the Police Department was removed due to leaking that was causing damage to the building. The rocks were moved to the Toledo Fire Department for their water display and the plan is to install a memorial rock in this space. The Police Department plans to develop the corner to be a Toledo Public Safety Memorial Garden remembering ones that lost their lives in the line of duty. Toledo Fire Department By Tony Monroe, Division Chief During the month of August, the Toledo Fire Department responded to the following 64 calls for assistance: 30 Medical 10 Public Service 5 Burn Complaints 3 Canceled 1 Gas Leak 1 Animal Rescue 9 Motor Vehicle Crash 4 Fire 1 False Alarm Mutual aid fire City Center Hotel The most notable call for August was mutual aid fire to Newport for the City Center Hotel Fire on August 5, 2016. Toledo Fire was on scene for about 6 hours to assist in battling the blaze. Toledo sent one engine, one ladder truck, three support vehicles, and 12 personnel, while still having personnel left to cover the Toledo area.. Toledo Employee Safety and Wellness Committee By Melodi McGee, Safety Committee Co-Chair During the month of August, the Toledo Employee Safety and Wellness Committee completed the following tasks: Completed quarterly safety inspections at City Hall, Library and Shops. Completed the Wellness Policy for City Manager adoption. Attended OSHA training in Salem. Bid farewell to Library representative, Tonia Storm, who resigned in August. 8
