Computer Education Program Computer classes starting February 1 include Computers 2 and Word. The next Mobile Devices classes will not be offered again until April. Schedules are available at the front desk. A free computer lab is held every Wednesday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Volunteers and instructors may be able to help you with your PC laptop and answer questions or you may just practice. They may also be able to help you decide which type of computer you may want to consider purchasing. Assessment interviews are also available at this time to determine the appropriate class for your skill level. Bowie Seniors Computer Clubs The Bowie Seniors Computer Club and the Apple Computer Club hosted by the Center are two excellent resources for information regarding computers and other electronic equipment. The Apple Club discusses Apple products, such as ipods, iphones, and ipads. The club meets on the second and fourth Fridays of each month from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The Bowie Seniors Computer Club meets on the first and third Thursdays of each month from 12:30 to 2:15 p.m. Computer club meetings are open to all seniors Center members and nonmembers alike. Let Your Voice Be Heard Thursday, February 8, 10 a.m. noon Join the City of Bowie s Office of Grant Development and Administration for a community outreach meeting at the Center as we seek your input in the development of a five-year planning document called the Consolidated Plan for Community Development. As an entitlement community, the City of Bowie is eligible to participate in the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The city is responsible for creating the consolidated plan to ensure consideration for CDBG grant funding. We embrace the premise that residents affected by programs and activities funded through the CDBG program have opinions and expertise that enhance the planning process. To this end, the city encourages and solicits input in defining housing, community development, and public service needs for the benefit of low- and moderate-income families who reside in Bowie. Feel free to view the draft of the Citizen Participation Plan at www.cityofbowie.org/ fiveyearplan that will provide guidance for public input and participation in the development and implementation process. For questions, call Charnette Holland, City of Bowie grant writer, at 301-809-3009. Looking for a Job? Starting in February, the Center will be able to help seniors search for jobs. In partnership with the Prince George s County American Job Center Community Network, seniors 55 and older who are interested in finding employment will be able to register on the Maryland Workforce Exchange (https://mwejobs.maryland.gov/vosnet/default.aspx) and search for employment opportunities. Center staff and volunteers who have been trained to support this service will be available for help on Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the computer classroom. 2 City of Bowie Senior Center

SAGE Spring 2018 Trimester The new year offers a great opportunity to expand your knowledge, skills, and interests. SAGE (Seasoned Adults Growing Educationally) classes are designed to keep both mind and body active and engaged. The Center is fortunate to partner with the Prince George s Community College SAGE Program to offer over 70 SAGE classes each week at the Center. With this extensive range of classes, there is something for everyone. Class topics include art, finance, health and fitness, history, languages, literature, music, self-awareness, writing, and more. Stop by the front desk for a complete list of course topics and descriptions. Classes begin the week of February 12. Classes run through May 26. Love Your Heart Month Wellness Wellness Coordinator, Mark Shields February is National Heart Health month. To keep your New Year s resolution of improving your health, here are some quick tips to keep your heart healthy. Decrease trans-fats, also known as partially hydrogenated oils, in your diet. These are typically found in highly processed prepackaged foods to help increase shelf life. Walk more. It s one of the simplest and lowest cost ways to be healthier. See the next tip and combine them to really boost your heart health. Spend time outside. There s just something about being outdoors in nature that reinvigorates us and reduces stress. Floss regularly. Our oral health is a good marker for overall heart health status, both directly and indirectly. Include nuts in your diet if you re not allergic. These contain some protein, as well as heart-healthy fats. Know your numbers. Two key ones to focus on are blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Spend time with animals. Studies have shown that simply petting a dog can help lower blood pressure, as well as release feel good chemicals in the brain. Not only that, it s been shown to be beneficial for the dog. Ongoing Exercise Activities at the Center Aquatic Exercise at Sport Fit Bowie Aquatic exercise provides a low-impact setting in shallow water which builds strength and endurance. Your body s natural buoyancy minimizes pressure or strain on working muscles and joints. The Bowie Senior Center is partnered with Sport Fit Bowie to offer our members a low-cost, aquatic-based exercise class. See the front desk to sign up. Chair Fitness If you re a beginner exerciser or have movement limitations, try our chair fitness class. The entire class is done seated to be joint friendly while providing a low-level challenge to your muscles and mind. Walk Aerobics This low-impact aerobics class is for varying levels of fitness and can be tailored to your abilities. Whether you want a faster pace or if you need to slow it down and modify, then you will enjoy this 45-minute aerobics exercise class which includes stretching and some light strengthening exercises. See pages 6 and 7 for schedules. Colon Health and You + Educational Bingo Thursday, February 22, 10:30 11:30 a.m. Join us for a short presentation by Doctor s Community Hospital on all things related to colon health. Getting fit for life as we age in place includes consistency in how we eat, as well as our activities. Health and wellness are the most important subjects we should discuss. When we feel good, we look good; however, it will take some resources and information in order to stay well. Mark your calendar for this date and time.
