05 About Safety Career Growing number of accidents at the work place especially in industrial sector led the Govt. to enact and implement various Acts and Rules for the safety of workers. As per the Safety Act, it is compulsory for every industrial establishment to recruit Safety Officers. This has made safety management a leading career option both in India and abroad. Safety Officers perform a variety of activities on site to save invaluable human life; therefore they are respected as well as paid handsomely. Safety management / Industrial safety is a branch of management which deals with the study of prevention of any accident or hazard, related to the health of the employees or equipments, chemicals or machinery used in an industry. The aim of Industrial Safety Management is to minimize the possibility of risks, accidents and injuries by the implementation of varied techniques of risk and safety management. Safety management professionals develop and implement various preventive measures to maintain a safe work environment. They are solely responsible for the implementation, and ensuring that all safety regulations are followed. The primary duty of a safety manager is to safeguard workers and the company against common workplace hazards. This may include protection from injury caused from biological and chemical agents, and from accidents caused by heavy metals and electricity hazards, by ensuring that the workers wear facemasks, goggles and protective clothing. The responsibilities of safety supervisors include; training and development of employees in safety practices, assessment of need of safety procedures, regular testing and monitoring of working environment, safety inspections, arrangement of special training in case of new equipments and procedures, improvement of safety Programs. Safety managers have to make workers aware about the do's and don'ts in the workplace. All organizations arrange work safety programs from time to time which give a better understanding of the value of safe work processes to their employees. This is a humanitarian career as it caters to humanity at large. Educational Eligibility : On completing a B Tech / BE / Graduation / Diploma in any stream, a student need to learn safety management aspects as per international standards through internationally accredited short term certi cations. These short term but highly subject intensive and quality oriented programs are available only through very few selected institutions. These programs provide an insight in to the safety management as well as engineering aspects and convert a rookie Engineer / Graduate to a Safety Engineer / Manager. 08 Safety Professionals Roles & Responsibilities Wherever people run the risk of personal injury or illness, they are likely to nd safety professionals at work. Safety professionals are people who use a wide variety of management, engineering and scienti c skills to prevent human suffering and related losses. Their speci c roles and activities vary widely, depending on their education, experience and the types of organizations for whom they work. Today Safety profession is a managerial function and does not involve ghting a Fire, for which specialized Fire Fighters are available. Safety professionals precise roles and responsibilities depend on the companies or organizations for whom they work. Different industries have different hazards and require unique safety expertise. However, most safety professionals do at least several of the following: l Hazard Recognition: identifying conditions or actions that may cause injury, illness or property damage. l Inspections/Audits: assessing safety and health risks associated with equipment, materials, processes, facilities or abilities. l Fire Protection: reducing re hazards by inspection, layout of facilities and processes, and design of re detection and suppression systems. l Regulatory Compliance: ensuring that mandatory safety and health standards are satis ed. l Health Hazard Control: controlling hazards such as noise, chemical exposures, radiation, or biological hazards that can create harm. l Ergonomics: improving the workplace based on an understanding of human physiological and psychological characteristics, abilities and limitations. l Hazardous Materials Management: ensuring that dangerous chemicals and other products are procured, stored, and disposed of in ways that prevent res, exposure to or harm from these substances. l Environmental Protection: controlling hazards that can lead to undesirable releases of harmful materials into the air, water or soil. l Training: providing employees and managers with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize hazards and perform their jobs safely and effectively. l Accident and Incident Investigations: determining the facts related to an accident or incident based on witness interviews, site inspections and collection of other evidence. l Advising Management: helping managers establish safety objectives, plan programs to achieve those objectives and integrate safety into the culture of an organization. l Record Keeping: maintaining safety and health information to meet government requirements, as well as to provide data for problem solving and decision making. l Evaluating: judging the effectiveness of existing safety and health related programs and activities. l Emergency Response: organizing, training and coordinating skilled employees with regard to auditory and visual communications pertaining to emergencies such as res, accidents or other disasters. l Managing Safety Programs: planning, organizing, budgeting, and tracking completion and effectiveness of activities intended to achieve safety objectives in an organization or to implement administrative or technical controls that will eliminate or reduce hazards. lproduct Safety: assessing the probability that exposure to a product during any stage of its lifecycle will lead to an unacceptable impact on human health or the environment and determining the appropriate auditory and visual hazard warnings. lsecurity: identifying and implementing design features and procedures to protect facilities and businesses from threats that introduce hazards.
