2 We are pleased to announce that Augustana College, Scott Community College, St Ambrose University and Western Illinois University will be presenting matching scholarships during the program. This is a new initiative and the scholarship committee plans on expanding to other state colleges next year. On behalf of the council membership we would like to thank Matt Casillas, scholarship chairman and the scholarship committee members; Rita Vargas, Decker Truesdell, Lupe Hernandez and Ernie Rodriguez for all their work this year. As Decker has said many times before This is one of the most important things we do. On a personal note I would like to thank the families of Bob Segura ant Lucy Vargas for their generous donations to the LULAC scholarship fund this year. Monies will be deposited into our foundation fund allowing for perpetual funding to the scholarship program. Urban Plunge: The Urban Plunge is the biggest service for the St. Ambrose Community. Each year, in order to introduce freshman to the service culture of the university, as well as to help them understand various social justice issues within our own community, the students are split into groups of 20 and bussed to thirty agencies around the community to perform two hours of service. This year, one of the groups has a theme titled "Diversity Matters" and has requested LULAC as their agency of choice. The date for the Urban Plunge is Monday, August 19th this year. A group of St Ambrose student will be onsite at the LULAC Center. After a brief overview of the Councils history and mission the students will be painting the wrought iron railing and the block walls on the front lower level of the building. We d also like to invite our members to participate as well. We ll start at 9:00 am. Jefferson Edison Stepping Stones Program: The council funded mini-scholarships to 40 at risk Hispanic students to attend an 8 week summer reading program. Additionally LULAC volunteers will be providing program support to include reading, field trips, etc. If you would like to volunteer and make a difference in a young child s life please contact Tory Reyes at (563) 209-3753 for more details. Also we have been invited to a Stepping Stones school celebration with students, parents and teachers on Wed 24 Jul. If you are interested in attending please let us know (see attached). Davenport Firefighter Recruitment Task Force: Chief Washburn has told us that four firefighters are being hired off the certified list for this year. They have placed high on the list and represent the diversity that we worked so hard to achieve. The actual hiring date for these recruits will be the 12 August. Chief Washburn asked me, and I have agreed, to be on the task force again this year when we start the process all over again for next year. What I learned is that our young adults can t go into this cold. They need Firefighter Training Courses, EMT Training, etc. to compete. These courses are available through local area colleges. They also need to be involved with their local community, volunteer firefighters, Citizens Fire Academy, etc. The fire department is looking for disciplined individuals and look to the military as well. Being a veteran is a positive as they know the military has already instilled discipline. We will be planning another firefighter informational workshop at the LULAC Center later this fall. Chief Washburn is to be commended on her efforts to bring diversity to the Davenport Fire Dept. Her model will be used in other Davenport City Depts.
