Three teams are tied in first (Notre Dame, Syracuse and Villanova) with one spot remaining for the BIG EAST Championship. Georgetown and St. John s are still vying for that final spot. With a win against Rutgers on Saturday, the Hoyas would clinch, while a loss to the Scarlet Knights would give the Red Storm a chance to keep playing. Villanova will host Providence, while Notre Dame and Syracuse will battle to keep the top spot in East Rutherford, N.J. Syracuse s last five games have been decided by one goal. The 9-8 win against Georgetown on Saturday was SU s eighth one-goal game of the year, the most of any team in the nation. With its win against Georgetown, the Orange improved to 10-3. It s the 44th time in 94 varsity seasons Syracuse has won at least 10 games. SU s JoJo Marasco had three assists this week, making it 30 this season. Marasco is tied with Brad Kotz (1984) for second on SU s season list for most assists by a midfielder. Paul Gait holds the record with 34 in 1990. No. 19/19 Villanova dropped a close 13-9 contest against No. 2/3 Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., on Saturday. The Wildcats held a two-goal advantage in a game that featured four tied scores and four lead changes. It marked the seventh loss this season for the Wildcats against an opponent ranked in the top-20 of the national polls. The win against the Wildcats moved the Irish into a tie with Villanova and Syracuse atop the BIG EAST standings and it clinched a spot in the league tournament for Notre Dame. The Irish have scored 10 or more goals in five straight games for the first time since the 2009 season. ND junior attackman John Scioscia tallied four goals and one assist in the win over Villanova. Scioscia has 12 goals in the last four games Colin Keegan of St. John s had six goals and an assist in a 16-13 win against Providence. The six goals tied a season-best for St. John s, as Kieran McArdle posted a six-spot against Robert Morris on March 23. Rutgers dropped a 17-6 decision to No. 7/6 Duke, despite a career-high 20 saves from RU freshman goalie Kris Alleyne. 15 Park Row West Providence, Rhode Island 02903 (401) 272-9108 Fax (401) 274-5967 Communications: (401) 453-0660 Fax (401) 751-8540 www.bigeast.org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sara Naggar, 401-453-0660 snaggar@bigeast.org BIG EAST PLAYERS OF THE Offensive Player of the Week John Scioscia, Notre Dame, Jr., A Scioscia led the Irish to a come-from-behind win against a top-20 conference opponent to help put them atop the BIG EAST standings and clinch a spot in the conference tournament. He had a game-high five points on four goals and an assist in a 13-9 win over No. 19/19 Villanova on Saturday. All four goals occurred in the second half, sparking a 9-3 run, which overturned a 6-4 Villanova lead. His first goal cut the Wildcat lead to one (6-5) and his second tally put the Irish up 8-6. After VU climbed back to within one late in the fourth quarter, he scored to make it 11-9. He scored the final goal of the game and picked up two ground balls. Defensive Player of the Week Matt Harris, Syracuse, Jr., LSM Harris led the SU defense with four caused turnovers and also picked up six ground balls in a 1-1 week for the Orange. Harris anchored an Orange defense that held Georgetown to one goal over a 37-minute stretch, encompassing most of the second half, to help Syracuse earn a crucial conference victory. In a loss to Hobart, Harris played a critical role in holding the Hobart starting midfield of Zach Reed, Taylor Vanderbeek and Jake Silberlicht without a goal. For the season, Harris leads the Orange with 36 ground balls.
