Gauteng Site Visit (2) It was indicated that setting meetings with CPD champions is a challenge because of their conflicting schedules and off duties. The log sheet does not have enough space for a stamp if a provider chooses to use one Excellence in professionalism and advocacy for health care users 4
Mpumalanga Site Visit Institutions participating in the SANC CPD pilot were visited on scheduled dates except the Department of Correctional Service and SANBS. With lessons learned from the Gauteng initial visits, more time was allocated per institution in order to address in detail any concerns and issues that may arise. Staff was found to be keen to undertake activities and some exceeded the required number of points. Excellence in professionalism and advocacy for health care users 5
Mpumalanga Site Visit (2) Productive meetings were held with hospital nursing management, Operation Managers including CPD champions Brief interviews were conducted with a Professional Nurse, an Enrolled Nurse and an Enrolled Nursing Auxiliary in selected units. The following were raised and discussed: CPD system has helped to formalize in-service education The institutions decided to develop a program where individuals choose a topic to present per theme. Excellence in professionalism and advocacy for health care users 6
Mpumalanga Site Visit (3) Enquired if 2 points for actioning can be allocated even if the participants are three in number They did not have a problem with thematic abbreviations Enquired about how many points are to be allocated if auditing a patient s file They enquired if patients can be allowed to sign the attendance register when given a health talk. They needed clarity on which topics can be relevant for each theme. Excellence in professionalism and advocacy for health care users 7
BEST PRACTICES Institutions that were already part of the Gauteng CPD program had a better understanding of the process. An individual and unit spreadsheet has been developed to assist in tracking accrual of CPD points per theme. A CPD Master file has been developed per unit in order to store presentations and spreadsheets CPD has been added as a standing agenda item for weekly management meetings Excellence in professionalism and advocacy for health care users 8
BEST PRACTICES (2) Night staff catered for in CPD activities. One institution ordered arch files for all their staff members and another one coloured-coded the files per category Some institutions have linked CPD to PMDS. Others have divided nurses in groups of 4-5, they do presentations for an hour on topics which have been scheduled per theme. Excellence in professionalism and advocacy for health care users 9
BEST PRACTICES (3) In some institutions presentations on CPD Pilot were conducted to those that did not attend the SANC briefing sessions. CPD Champions have been nominated to drive the process in each unit in some institutions. One institution share journal articles amongst themselves once a month Excellence in professionalism and advocacy for health care users 10
CHALLENGES Some institutions are unable to make copies of attendance registers due to financial constrains and also due to large number of staff that attend CPD activities. Most institutions did not know what are the CPD thematic abbreviations which are to be used on the log-sheet. Some nurses indicated that they arrive late for learning activities due to shortage of staff. Excellence in professionalism and advocacy for health care users 11
CHALLENGES (2) Setting meetings with CPD champions is sometimes a challenge because of their conflicting schedules and off duties. The Log-sheet does not have enough space for a stamp if a provider would like to use one, or to include any other information about the provider. It was found that Managers do not cascade information to their constituencies. SANC team was compelled to conduct briefing sessions again. Excellence in professionalism and advocacy for health care users 12
CHALLENGES (3) Lower category nurses indicated that the information during the briefings was new to them and they could not assimilate it It was found that some left the Handbook at home, and others did not know where their Handbooks are. Those that have logged activities, needed little help in some areas. Some clinic staff were not told by their Managers that SANC team will be conducting monitoring and support visits Excellence in professionalism and advocacy for health care users 13
WAY FORWARD Will continue to conduct monthly monitoring visits Will continue to compile feedback to make recommendations at the end of the pilot period Excellence in professionalism and advocacy for health care users 14
