SELF CARE AND RESILIENCE FOR NURSES DELIVERED BY EILEEN HOPKINS, RGN, RCN. PROFESSIONAL LIFE COACH & TRAINER 19/02/18 ST. ITA S PORTRANE

MY NURSING JOURNEY

MY LIFE TODAY

COMPASSION FATIGUE 4 AREAS WE WILL LOOK AT 1. Self-care & it s importance 2. Compassion Fatigue & Burnout 3. Developing Resilience 4. Self care plan 4

WORDS TO LIVE BY YOU CANNOT KEEP GIVING TO OTHERS IF YOU DO NOT GIVE TO YOURSELF, FIRST. IT IS LIKE POURING WATER FROM A VESSEL; YOU CANNOT POUR AND POUR WITHOUT EVER REFILLING IT- EVENTUALLY IT WILL RUN DRY. (Leslie K. Lobell) 5

DEFINITION OF SELF-CARE SELF CARE is a broad concept that involves engaging in activities that can reduce stress and improve our mental and physical health. 6

GROUP SELF-CARE CHECK-IN

THE SELF-CARE CHALLENGE As nurses we are busy helping others. We are fixers - creating awareness, changing perspectives and designing actions. We can neglect to do the same for ourselves

OUR BASIC NEEDS

STRESSORS FOR NURSES Protecting patients rights; Staffing patterns; Advanced care planning; surrogate decision-making (Ulrich et al., 2010); Unpredictable and challenging workspaces; violence; increased paperwork; reduced managerial support (Ward, 2011); Role-based factors such as lack of power, role ambiguity, and role conflict (Moustaka&Constantinidis, 2010). Threats to career development and achievement, including threat of redundancy, being undervalued, and unclear promotion prospects were also reported as stressful (Moustaka&Constantinidis, 2010). Ulrich et al. (2010) found that younger nurses and those with less experience were more prone to experience job related stress.

SELF-CARE, LOBSTER STYLE!

LIFE BALANCE EXERCISE

MY SELF-CARE HANG OUT!

COMPASSION FATIGUE This is an emotional & physical burden created by the trauma of caring for others in distress This can result in a reduced capacity for empathy toward suffering in the future Compassion fatigue/satisfaction self-test, (CFS) - Figley & Stamm

COMPASSION FATIGUE THE COST OF CARING FOR OTHERS (Charles Figley ) It can be easy to forget to take care of ourselves Neglecting self care can lead to compassion fatigue. Not only does compassion fatigue negatively impact the sufferer, but it also impacts our ability to care effectively for others

BURNOUT This results from the stresses of work There are 3 primary characteristics 1. Emotional exhaustion 2. Alienation from job-related activities 3. Reduced performance

VICARIOUS TRAUMA This refers to changes in the inner experience of the Healthcare Professional resulting from empathetic engagement with a traumatised client.

WHAT S THE DIFFERENCE THEN? Compassion fatigue is associated with the work you do. Burnout is the extreme end of compassion fatigue. Both compassion fatigue & vicarious trauma can lead to burn out. In turn, burn out can lead to serious physical & medical illness.

19

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE! Prevention is possible Recognise warning signs in self and others Seek help early Practice self care and compassion Keep life at work separate from life at home Practice relaxation, meditation and or journaling Early detection of a problem, e.g. EAP Programme / Counselling

21

RESILIENCE MEANS... The ability to handle... Adversity Change Loss Poor behaviour of others... And...sometimes of yourself!!

23

RESILIENCE WHAT IS IT? https://youtu.be/1fdyiuen8vw 24

HOW TO DEVELOP RESILIENCE? Practice beginners mind Maintain an open optimistic and flexible mind Believe in yourself and your ability Be aware of your emotions and your impact Take person responsility and avoid the victim mentality Be kind and compassionate Practice mindfulness and gratitude Challenge your self limiting beliefs Stay committed Stay authentic Be willing to learn for the experience, good and bad

IN EVERYDAY LIFE...

27

BENEFITS OF MINDFULNESS? Reduces stress and anxiety Reduces fight/flight reaction Reduces depression Reduces insomnia Increases sense of wellbeing Helps manage pain

BENEFITS CONTINUED Sharpens memory Improves emotional and social intelligence Develops your empathy and compassion Improves relationships Improves health and wellbeing Improves confidence and emotional wellbeing

ONE MINUTE MINDFULNESS PRACTICE Stop Take a breath Take note of where you feel it most easily in the body Observe Acknowledge what is happening in this moment Put Aside (pause, proceed, plan)

TIME TO PLAN

YOUR EMERGENCY SELF-CARE TOOL-KIT

SOME COPING SKILLS- WHAT WORKS??

RECAP The 4 areas I talked about today: Self care and why it is important for everyone Compassion fatigue & Burnout Developing Resilience Your self-care plan

AT WHAT STAGE DO YOU REFILL YOUR TANK? Do you wait until the red warning light is flashing? We can apply this analogy to our body and our minds Do we wait until we become very stressed? The time we take to refuel is an investment in our long time self-care and resilience

GROUP PERSPECTIVE What do you see differently in your rear view mirror as you leave today? 39

You are seen, your heart is known. Who you are at a soul level is valued and appreciated by more people that you can imagine. If you knew how many people have been touched in wonderful ways by you, you would be astonished. If you knew how many people feel so much for you, you would be shocked. You are far more wonderful than you think you are. Rest with that, sit with that, breathe. You are doing fine, more than fine In fact you are doing great. So relax and just love yourself a little more today. (Source unknown). 40
