POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: DEPARTMENT/SERVICE: OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST ASSESSMENT TREATMENT & REHABILITATION WARD, ACUTE STROKE UNIT OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SERVICES REPORTS TO: PROFESSIONALLY REPORTS TO: CLINICAL MANAGER THERAPIES PROFESSIONAL ADVISOR OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY APPROVED: Manager Date ACCEPTED: Employee Date ROLE SUMMARY This position works principally within the department or service specified above, however all employees at Whanganui District Health Board may be required to undertake duties in other areas of the organisation which promote the efficient and effective operation of Whanganui District Health Board which reasonably fall within the general parameters of this position PURPOSE OF THE POSITION To provide Occupational Therapy to patients within Whanganui District Health Board as directed by the Occupational Therapy Clinical Coordinator To provide occupational therapy to all patient referred to the ATR ward and Acute Stroke unit To follow up all stroke clients requiring occupational therapy in the community. To participate in the stroke follow up clinic. To provide cover to other areas of occupational therapy as directed by the clinical coordinator. 1

DIRECT REPORTS Nil DELEGATED AUTHORITIES Allocating and monitoring work for rotational junior staff and therapy assistant. Responsible for day to day Clinical Occupational Therapy assessments and intervention in this area. Update on any quality initiatives for this area Providing support to therapists as appropriate. Includes therapy assistants, loan equipment service & technician, supervising students when on placement in the department. i Participates in meetings and works with other members of the multidisciplinary team to provide care. Support the Clinical Nurse Leader in developing and implementing any changes necessary for this are Educates and communicates with WDHB staff for the best interest of the patient and in providing a OT services Nature or purpose of contact: Educates and works with the patient and their family to ensure a comprehensive and agreed assessment and treatment plan is undertaken and adhered to Receives referrals for patients and trains and works with staff within the various agencies Community Organisations and Agencies Other Hospitals Patient transfers & referrals General Practitioners Keep GP informed. OT interventions & outcomes are reported in discharge reports as appropriate to service REGISTRATION/SCOPE OF PRACTICE You must be able to demonstrate that you are registered with the Occupational Therapy Board of New Zealand and that your scope of practice enables you to undertake the duties of this position. 2

Demonstrate regular attendance to Mutidisciplinary meeting and family meetings. Community Liaison Develop and maintain good working relationships with non government agencies and voluntary groups. IDEAL PERSON PROFILE QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Essential New Zealand registered Occupational Therapist with Current Annual Practicing Certificate Previous work experience in the area of Rehabilitation or Acute Occupational Therapy. Demonstrate Knowledge of Occupational Therapy Models of Practice that apply to this Area 2 years Occupational Therapy Practice post graduate experience Demonstrate experience in supervision of junior staff, assistants or students. Demonstrate ability to function positively in a MDT Current New Zealand full drivers licence Desirable Is working toward or has already gained credentialed or approved assessor status with Enable NZ in basic/ complex Housing, MOH list/ complex equipment and wheeled mobility postural management levels 1 & 2 Physically fit and able to lift (as per patient handling guidelines) Motivated to maintain high level of knowledge and skill 5

Ability to frequently stand, walk, stretch, sit, bend, twist, lift/move heavy weights no more that stated in the ACC guidelines female 16kgs, male 25kgs and using safe transfer techniques Manual dexterity is required to operate equipment and write. Visual ability sufficient to drive, write and use equipment. Hearing and speech sufficient to communicate with clients. Mental concentration and related abilities are required commensurate with professional standards. Skin should not be fissured, scaly, cracked on hands, forearms, face, head or neck. Ability to undertake frequent hand washing. Freedom from colonisation or infection with MRSA. Absence of a health condition which could increase appointee s susceptibility if exposed to infections a little more frequently than in normal daily living. Must be able to function under rapidly changing and demanding conditions. 6
