Health Care Assistants assist teachers and nurses by helping in the training and education of disabled students by presenting educational material or exercises, and applying approved medical procedures. Typical duties include, but are not limited to: *Performing or assisting the School Nurse with basic nursing care and protocols. These protocols may include: catheterization, gastrostomy tube feeding, oral suctioning, ostomy care, tracheostomy, suctioning, and other procedures as assigned by the School Nurse. *Performing a variety of activities pertinent to training, disciplining, and tutoring in order to inculcate habits, knowledge, and skills in disabled students. *Presenting lessons to a student or group of students, and checking accuracy of students' work and presenting additional assignments as directed by the teacher. Candidates must also possess twelve (12) college semester units or 18 quarter units in courses such as child growth and development, sociology, psychology, health, education, or courses directly related to the physical care or psychology of the disabled. Experience: (A) One year of paid experience assisting teachers in providing classroom instruction and in caring for the physical and social needs of students with disabilities, OR (B) One year of paid experience in an education program for children with disabilities and current status as a permanent Special Education Assistant. Special: *A First-Aid Certificate issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross must be kept valid during the term of employment. *A CPR Certificate issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross must be kept valid during the term of employment. Special Physical Requirements: *Ability to speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard throughout the
classroom. *Ability to safely lift and carry or assist in lifting and carrying students of varying weights. *Manual dexterity sufficient to provide medical treatments. Desirable Qualifications The Division of Special Education is seeking qualified and passionate individuals to perform critical roles as Health Care Assistants. Ideal candidates will possess a comprehensive understanding of the technical knowledge required for this position, including common medical conditions affecting disabled students, as well as procedures related to disease control and prevention; first-aid concepts; procedures for administering medicine in a school setting; and special education concepts. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have a proven history of effective interpersonal relationships; the ability to make informed decisions under highly stressful conditions; the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a challenging workload; and high levels of dependability and reliability, as evidenced by a strong attendance record. Employment Selection Process The employment assessment for this position tentatively consists of two multiple-choice assessments (one given before training and one after training); a Health Care Assistant training course and performance assessment; and an interview. (1) Candidates who apply and meet the minimum job requirements for this position will be invited to participate in a computerized multiple-choice assessment. (2) Candidates who meet the minimum job requirements and are successful on this assessment will be invited to participate in a three-day (8 hours/day) Health Care Assistant training course. (3) At the conclusion of the course, candidates who attend ALL THREE days of training will participate in a performance assessment designed to evaluate their ability to effectively perform the medical procedures taught as part of the training course. (4) Candidates who are successful on the performance test will be invited to participate in a second computerized multiple-choice assessment. (5) Finally, candidates who pass this second multiple-choice assessment will be invited to participate in the interview. The TENTATIVE testing dates are provided below (may be subject to
