THE 2015/2016 NOVO FUNDED SEMDSATRAVEL GRANT South African Citizens Only I. OBJECTIVES 1. To stimulate interest in the management of diabetic patients in South Africa. 2. Through exposure to European Diabetes Training Centers, increase the competence of specialists active in the field of diabetes treatment. 3. To improve the quality of diabetes treatment in South Africa with emphasis, if possible, on centers where such treatment is currently limited. 4. The award will preferably be made to a candidate who would not otherwise be able to travel to a diabetes unit overseas. II CANDIDATES The following are the criteria applicable to candidates for this grant: 1. The candidate should preferably be less than 40 years of age. 2. The candidate should preferably be registered for a higher degree. 3. The candidate should preferably be in full-time employment of a recognized Endocrine unit at an academic institution.
4. The candidate should agree to return to South Africa for a minimum period of two years after completion of the overseas trip. 5. The candidate must be committed to a career in endocrinology with special emphasis on diabetes. 6. The candidate must receive the approval from his/her medical school/ principals to undergo such training and to be absent from his/her place of employment for a period of approximately six weeks. 7. The candidate must be a registered member of SEMDSA. 8. Within two months of his/her return to this country, the successful candidate must submit a written report regarding his/her experiences to SEMDSA. 9. A letter of recommendation from the head of the unit to be submitted together with the application. 10. A plan of what the candidate envisages doing for the six weeks away on the travel grant should be submitted together with the application. 11. The candidate should preferably spend the six weeks of the travel grant at a single overseas center but not more than two centers. 12. If no candidate is deemed worthy of the grant, the grant will be deferred until the next regular SEMDSA meeting. III VALUE OF THE GRANT The value of the grant to SEMDSA shall be R60000.00. This amount shall be allocated to the successful candidate to cover all airfares and expenses while training. The candidate shall keep an accurate record of all expenses incurred against this grant, and on his/her return to South Africa, report on the subject to SEMDSA. Should the candidate s expenses be less than the value of the grant, the balance of the grant shall be a donation from Novo Nordisk (Pty) Ltd., to SEMDSA with the purpose of covering expenses such as air fares and accommodation of committee members when attending committee meetings, congresses or symposia. Should the candidate s expenses exceed the value of the grant, the candidate shall be personally responsible for such additional expenditure. IV TIMING 1. All applications to be received by the Secretariat of SEMDSA by No later than 20 March 2015. 2. The Selection Committee will evaluate all applications and applicants will be interviewed telephonically or by other means if necessary. The name of the successful applicant will be announced by the SEMDSA Committee. 3. The candidate must take up the grant by no later than 31 May 2016.
