(8 a.m. 2 p.m.) We always have lots of good bargains. We will also be selling hotdogs, root beer floats, and baked goods (please bring your baked goods in on Wednesday, May 16th or Thursday morning, May 17th to be priced. Donations from your spring cleaning will be gladly accepted beginning May 14th. These items should be in good condition. DO NOT PRICE WE WILL BE ASKING FOR CASH DONATION FOR ITEMS AT THIS SALE. We need volunteers to run the yard sale, to set up and put away. Please let us know how you can help. Fountain Festival: Please set aside Friday, June 15th and Saturday, June 16th for the annual Fountain Festival activities. We are having our usual homemade pie and homemade ice cream sale both days. We will need your help because this is one of our biggest fundraisers. Your help is needed in two-hour shifts from 1:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the 15th and 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the 16th. Please let us know if you can help either day by calling 717-776-4478. The only way this is successful is because of your generosity of homemade pies (which are legendary and we sell up to 75 pies during the sale) and your time. Zumba Gold every Monday and Thursday at 9:00 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church. The cost is $2.00-a-class for those 60+/$5.00-a-class for those 50 to 59. Zumba Gold is a low-intensity version of the Latin dance-inspired fitness class aimed at a more mature audience. Research at Minot State University in North Dakota has indicated that Zumba not only has an effect on physical fitness, but also on cognitive (mental) function. Just walk in. Stretching We stretch, using a video, at the Big Spring Senior Center. It is free for those who are members/$5.00 for non-members or those 50 to 59. Please check the activity calendar for dates and times; although it is usually on a Friday at 12:00 p.m. Just walk in. T ai Chi for Arthritis Held on Tuesdays May 1, 8, and 15 at 9 a.m. and May 22, 29, June 5, 12, 19 and 26 at 11 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church. Cost is $5 donation per class. To register, call 717-776-4478. Yoga Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The class is held at Big Spring Presbyterian Church, 25 South Corporation Street, Newville. Yoga is a mind-body practice that combines stretching exercises, controlled breathing and relaxation. Yoga can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve heart function (from the Mayo Clinic website). The cost is $65/$55 if you are a member of the Senior Center. Registration and payment are due before the classes start. This 10-week session begins Wednesday, May 16th but can be pro-rated if you start mid-session. It s Picnic Season!!!!! Memorial Day & Independence Day Picnics: On Friday, May 25th @ 12:00 noon we will be having our Memorial Day Celebration Picnic and on Thursday, July 5th @ 12 noon we will be having our Independence Day Celebration Picnic. Both the Senior Center members and Mountain View Apartments residents are invited.. A sign-up sheet will be on the receptionist s desk at the Senior Center. Call Cathy at 717-776-4478 for details. AARP Refresher Course Friday, June 22nd from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. AARP will hold their Safe Driver s Refresher Course at the Senior Center. This is for those who have taken the original 8-hour course and it is time for renewal. The fee is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-aarp members, payable to the instructor that day. Call the Senior Center at 717-776- 4478 to register or for more information. Annual Spelling Bee Challenge! Cumberland County Aging & Community Services will be hosting the 14th Annual Spelling Bee Challenge on May 30, 2018 at 1 p.m. at the County Public Safety Building, 1 Public Safety Drive, Carlisle (behind Aging & Community Services). The Spelling Bee is open to all Cumberland County residents aged 50 and better and/ or Cumberland County Senior Center participants. Van and Carpool Trips BIG SPRING NEWS Monday, May 14th Lunch at Road House Restaurant, 909 Walnut Bottom Road, Carlisle. Join other Senior Centers for lunch at 12:00 noon. This is a car pool event. Please sign up no later than Friday, May 11th, if you are interested in joining us. We will be leaving the Senior Center at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 23rd Indoor/Outdoor Beach Party @ Branch Creek Place Senior Center. Get out your beach gear, dust it off, and join us for a Day at the Beach from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. To get everyone in the mood for warm beachy weather, the Senior Center will have outdoor games as well as indoor beach volleyball. A prize will be given to the individual with the most creative beach look (no bikinis please!). For lunch you can purchase a Coney dog, oven French fries, and Rhoda s famous coleslaw with drink for $5 and a funnel cake for $3. As a bonus, for those who enjoy the island drinks, we are making virgin Pina Coladas and Strawberry Daiquiris for $2 each. Let s ALL get into summer and attend this day of fun at the BCP Beach! Sign up no later than May 18th. We will be leaving the Big Spring Senior Center at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 7th Wii Bowling Tournament. Members of our Wii Bowling Team will be participating at the Carlisle Senior Action Center (Salvation Army) beginning at 9:00 a.m. If you have been Wii Bowling, please join our team. Each Center is limited to 6 participants. We will be leaving the Big Spring Senior Center at 8:30 a.m. and we should be returning around 2 3 p.m. Lunch will be your choice of PCN lunch at the Senior Center at 11:30 a.m. or lunch at the Gingerbread Man in Carlisle at 1 p.m. after the Tournament. Sign up for this event NO LATER than June 4th. Monday, June 18th Meet and Eat Lunch at Fiddlers at May Apple Golf Club, 1 May Apple Drive, Carlisle. Join other Senior Centers for lunch at 12:00 noon. This is a car pool event. Please sign up no later than Friday, June 15th, if you are interested in joining us. We will be leaving the Senior Center at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, June 19th Combined Senior Center Picnic. For an activity that is a little different, we have planned a picnic at Caledonia State Park beginning at 9:00 a.m. A pavilion has been reserved for this event, so we can be surrounded by nature in all its glory. This will be a POT LUCK picnic (hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided). We will be car-pooling, so sign up no later than Friday, June 15th. The cost is $2.00 to help pay for the pavilion. We will have lots of activities and games including a scavenger hunt! So bring your lawn chair, a dish to share, your drink of choice (no alcohol, please!) and join us for a great time outdoors. A cooler will be provided to keep your cold food cold until we eat lunch. For those that enjoy swimming, bring your suit and for $5.00 more you can swim in the community pool from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Don t forget your towel!!! Sunday, July 1st Come join us for a delightful evening of fine music and twinkling fireflies on the Rush Campus of Dickinson College. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the music of the Harrisburg Symphony. The van leaves the Senior Center at 6 p.m. in plenty of time for the music which begins at 7:30 p.m. Sign up and pay $5 for transportation by Friday, June 29th. Special Programs Watercolor Painting Opportunity: Mondays at 2 p.m. at the Center. Do you have an interest in water coloring? It takes space, inspiration and motivation, and we can help. Join our friendly group of painters. The cost is $1/week to the Senior Center. Please call 717-776-4478 to get more information. Crafts: Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m. at the Center. We could use your help, hands and ideas. Come and make beaded jewelry, seasonal and everyday crafts, as well as new friends. This program is open to the public. Call 717-776-4478 to let us know you are coming. Bible Study: Every Wednesday in May and June at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Amy Walker of Zion Lutheran Church will be leading our Bible Study. Pastor Walker will be using the Daily Discipleship Series which will follow the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) as her study guide. Games at the Center: Lots of opportunities to play cards and games can be found at the Center. On Thursday mornings, at 9:30 a.m., we play 500 with a dedicated group of card players and we are always looking for new players. Come play Corn Hole, Shuffleboard, Ladder Ball and board games. On Thursday afternoons, at 12:30 p.m., Bob Ballard or Bill & Linda Sweigart lead us in a variety of games. Don t ever consider playing games as frivolous; studies show that it stimulates your brain which helps counter the aging process. Game Night is Tuesday, May 29th and Tuesday, June 26th beginning at 6 p.m. Wii Bowling: Check out Wii Bowling on Mondays at 9 a.m. and Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. This game is limited to 4 players, so signups are necessary; it s on a first-come first-serve basis. Blood Pressure Check: Anna Failor, a retired nurse, is volunteering her time on Wednesday, May 30th and Wednesday, June 27th from 12:15 1 p.m., to help you keep track of this important health indicator. Breakfast Groups: On Friday, May 11th at 8:30 am., we will be holding the Men s Breakfast and on Friday, June 1st at 8:30 a.m. we will be holding the Ladies Breakfast. Come and enjoy a hot, homemade breakfast made by staff and volunteers of the Senior Center. $5.00 Restaurant Outings: On Thursday, May 10th, our Lunch Bunch will going to Kimberly s Café, 530 West High Street, Carlisle. On Thursday, June 14th the Lunch Bunch will be going to Spoon s Café, 57 West Pomfret Street, Carlisle. We leave the Senior Center at 11 a.m. January-June Birthday Party: Birthday Greetings to those whose birthdays are January through June. You are invited to a special birthday celebration at the Senior Center on Tuesday, June 5th at 2:00 p.m. is being planned. Please contact the Center by Friday, June 1st. to sign up. Cinco de Mayo Luncheon: On Thursday, May 3rd at 11:30 a.m. come celebrate this Mexican holiday with lunch at 11:30 a.m. There will be a taco & baked potato bar & a Mexican desert. Call in your reservation by noon, Tuesday, May 1st. The cost of the meal is $5. Mother s Day Tea & Master Gardners: On Friday, May 11th at 2 p.m. we will be enjoying a social time of light refreshments and a Culinary Tea Presentation & Potting with the Gardner s. Sign up by noon, Wednesday, May 9th. Mothers Day Pot Luck w/entrusted 365: On Saturday, May 12th the Big Spring Senior Center invites everyone to a Mother s Day Pot Luck at 6:00 p.m. at First United Presbyterian Church, 111 W. Big Spring Ave., Newville. Bring your favorite dish to share. Place settings & drinks will be provided. Sign up no later than Friday, May 11th. Entertainment provided by Entrusted 365. Cinema Friday-Movie, Root Beer Float & Popcorn: Come out and join your friends at the Big Spring Senior Center and watch a blockbuster movie on May 18th and June 8th from 1 p.m. 3 p.m. We are asking for a $2 donation to cover the cost of the floats and popcorn.

On Thursday, June 14th, at 6:30 p.m., the Walking Together topic will be Effective Communication Strategies, also provided by the Alzheimer s Association. 2018 Senior Games: The 2018 Cumberland County Senior Games will return for an annual day of goodnatured athletic competition on Thursday, July 19th at Mechanicsburg High School. The games are open to all Cumberland County residents aged 50 and better and/or Cumberland County Senior Center participants. Four vouchers of $5.00 each are given to seniors who are 60+ years during the program year and meet the income requirements. These vouchers may only be used to purchase produce grown or growable in Pennsylvania at participating farmers markets. The Big Spring Senior Center will distribute vouchers on Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon until they are gone.
