FLIGHT CAPTAIN S CORNER Fellow Daedalians. It looks like spring is just around the corner as the freeze warnings are now only a faint memory. I want to thank Tim McCool and his able assistant (and our Provost Marshall) George Ross for an excellent presentation on Low Observable Technology during our February Dinner Meeting. We had a good turnout with two additional guests attending. We also had our first Friend of Flight application from Don Schofield, former pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force and a high time pilot of the Avro Lancaster Bomber (Owned by the Canadian Warplane Heritage (Cont. on page 2)

(Cont. from page 1) Museum). Some of you may recall Don was a guest speaker at our meeting in January 2016. I look forward to welcoming him as a Friend of Flight. Several announcements made at the February meeting that I would like to highlight here: - There will be a Dedication Ceremony of the WWI Monument to recognize Airmen who served in WWI at the National Museum of the US Air Force, Memorial Park, Wright Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio, on Friday, 21 September 2018. Anyone interested in contributing to the Memorial, please contact me. - Jim Wolff presented our Flight a print of two F-100 aircraft taking off from Bien Hoa Air Base after the Viet Cong had attacked the field in 1968. It was during this attack that Col George Bud Day was flying the F-100 in combat support during the Tet Offensive. The picture will be proudly displayed with our other memorabilia in the Daedalian Room. - Paul Guzowski presented new members of the Flight with autographed copies of the book American Patriot: The Life and Wars of Col Bud Day written by Robert Coram. - LtCol Chris Foltz announced the Collings Foundation s warbirds will be visiting both Panama City (28 Feb-2 Mar) and Destin (2-4 Mar). Various WWII vintage aircraft will be available for interested members of the public to purchase flight time or passenger seats. As I hope you noticed above, this month s meeting will be held at the Fort Walton Yacht Club, due to a delay in re-opening the Bayview Club under new management. The Yacht Club is at 180 Ferry Road NE in Fort Walton Beach. (Directions: From wherever you are, head to Cinco Bayou on Eglin Parkway. Just south of the Cinco Bayou Bridge, turn eastbound on Yacht Club Drive, proceed 1.1 miles to the stop sign at Ferry Road, turn left and the FWYC is at the end of Ferry Road. Park. Go inside. Have a drink.) Our guest speaker for the meeting on Thursday March 15 will be our own Dr. Dick Hallion. Dr. Hallion served as the U.S. Air Force Historian, Headquarters United States Air Force, from 1991-2002 and is one of only fifteen Honorary Daedalians. His previous positions include Curator of Science and Technology, and subsequently Curator of Space Science, National Air and Space Museum 1974-1980; NASA Contract Historian and University of Maryland instructor in the history of aerospace engineering 1980-82; Air Force Flight Test Center Chief Historian 1982-86; Director, Special Staff Office, Aeronautical Systems Division 1986-87; Harold Keith Johnson Visiting Chair in Military History, US Army War College 1987-88; Executive Historian for AF Special Programs 1988-90; and Senior Issues and Policy Analyst, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force 1991.
