The 33 rd (extraordinary) session of the Bureau of the Intergovernmental Council of the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) was convened at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 16 June 2002 at 5:00 PM. Mr R. Feddes (The Netherlands), Chairperson, and the following Vice-Chairpersons attended the meeting: Mr W. Strupczewski (Poland), Mr C. Castaño Uribe (Colombia) and Mr K. Takeuchi (Japan). Mr A. Afouda (Benin) and Mr M. Benbiba (Morocco) were unable to attend and sent their apologies. The list of participants is annexed. The Bureau had only one agenda item to consider nominations for the Governing Board of the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education. 2. This extraordinary session was foreseen by the 32 nd session of the IHP Bureau (Paris, 4-5 March 2002) in the event that no consolidated nomination list for membership in the Governing Board of the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education would have been established by 1 May 2002 (ref: paragraph 9 of document IHP/IC-Bur-XXXII/3 Final Report of the 32 nd session of the IHP Bureau). 3. The Bureau reviewed the list of candidates and recalled the Terms of Reference for nominations. It also emphasized that, next to academic excellence, international professional and leadership experience, members elected by IHP into the Governing Board of the Institute should also be able to represent and promote water education in the public and political arena. Furthermore, their knowledge of the Institute and that of the IHP would be an additional asset. The Bureau considered broad representation of water related scientific disciplines. 4. The Bureau decided to recommend to the 15 th session of the Intergovernmental Council of IHP the adoption of the following nominees to represent IHP in the Governing Board of the Institute for the duration of four years. The nomination refers to an equitable geographical distribution according to the electoral regions. The Bureau acknowledged the large number of nominations of excellent professionals and academics it received from all electoral regional. It invites the Institute and those highly-qualified candidates who were not nominated to the Board to collaborate in the achievement of the Institute s objectives and to contribute, among others, to the linguistic plurality of water education world wide. 6. The Chairperson brought the 33 rd (extraordinary) session to a close at 5:45 PM on 16 June 2002.
