HILTON HEAD-LINER ARMY MARINES NAVY AIR FORCE COAST GUARD The Hilton Head Area Chapter The Military Officers Association of America Bluffton - Hilton Head Island - Sun City September-October 2017 NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION US PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE President s Comments MIKE DANOFF, MD Despite recent multiple tropical storm threats including powerful Hurricane Irma, we are most grateful in Hilton Head Island this year as most of us were not too badly compromised. We don t want to remember all the devastation that Hurricane Matthew of 2016 brought us. Our Shelter Cove Veterans Memorial Park remains unscathed. We had a joint Luncheon with the Low Country MOAA at the MCAS Beaufort Officers Club to honor the new Commanding Officer, Colonel Timothy P. Miller, on September 26, 2017. It was well attended by our Chapter. Military Veterans Coalition of Hilton Head Board met on October 3, 2017. The American Legion Post 42 will conduct this year s Veterans Day Ceremony on Saturday November 11, 2017. MOAA Spouses for Service has scheduled a Luncheon program at the Poseidon Restaurant following the ceremony. Please register early. At our next Luncheon program on Tuesday October 17, 2017, we will be honored by our State Representative Jeffrey Bradley and State Senator Tom Davis. They will address issues relevant to military and veterans. SC State Council has honored Hilton Head Area Chapter by requesting our presence at the biennial State Convention on Saturday November 4, 2017 at Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC. Five Star Level of Excellence Award is being recognized and will be presented to our Chapter. Tom Sharkey and Jerry Glass are preparing to deliver a formal Power Point 1 presentation on our success of membership and retention strategy. Please join us by registering early. 2018 Board Nominees were presented at our October 4, 2017 Board meeting: President-Dick Wiles, First VP-John Cully, Secretary-Mary Lou Fehrman. Treasurer-Kerry McMahon, Legislative-Jay Mullinax, Military Veterans Coalition-Charles Gobrecht and Public Affairs-Robert Blok. These Nominees shall be carefully considered by our membership and at the December Annual meeting shall be voted on with final installation on January 18, 2018. On October 7, 2017, Dick Wiles has withdrawn his nomination for President. Please contact me if you wish to be considered. Welcome to New Members Rear Admiral Dick Avrit USN (Ret) Major Bill McCombs USMC (Ret) 1LT George Grotz, USA (Fmr) COL Robert Blok, USA (Ret) Capt, Mark Stuckart, USMC, (Fmr)

MOAA Spouses for Service (MSforS) The summer of 2017 has past. I hope that you had a great one, focusing on family and friends as the heat and humidity was at its most impressively, oppressive heights. The Annual air conditioned MOAA picnic, attended by more than 70, provided a respite from the heat and an opportunity to reconnect with our MOAA family. Many thanks to all of the MOAA Spouses who provided an impressive array of delicious appetizers to get the party started, as well as all of the MSforS who helped make the party a success from setup to cleanup. A special thanks to Sally McGarry and Tom Renshaw for a fun game of Trivia. As we move into fall and our MOAA objectives demand action to bring our plans to fruition, the Worker Bees have been busy working to make that happen. As always, invite your MOAA eligible friends to join us for one of our events. Plan to join us for our second casual impromptu dinner, celebrating Halloween, on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at 6:00 PM. We are going as tourists, and meeting at The Crazy Crab Jarvis Creek, on the north end, 104 William Hilton Parkway, 29926. RSVP to jayne.danoff@gmail.com no later than Thursday, October 26, 2017. Want to meet more of the larger MOAA family, Saturday, November 4, 2017, make plans to attend the biennial 2017 South Carolina Council of Chapters Conference, at the Fort Jackson Officers Club, Columbia, SC. This is a one day conference - 9:00 AM to 3:45 PM. The price of the luncheon is $25.00. Be there when our Chapter receives the 5 Star Level of Excellence Award for 2016. On Friday, November 3, 2017, if you plan to arrive in Columbia early, let's get together for a pre-conference HH Chapter dinner in Columbia, for details contact jayne.danoff@gmail.com. Saturday, November 11, 2017, Hilton Head celebrates Veteran's Day at the Memorial Park at Shelter Cove. Following the ceremonies, MSforS and the American Legion Post 42 will host the Third Annual Veteran's Day Luncheon at the Poseidon Restaurant in Shelter Cove. See the attached flyer for details and RSVP early to insure a seat at the table. At both Veteran s Day and the Holiday Party, there will be a basket available for the collection of books for the annual holiday bookdrive. Books should be appropriate for children in grades K-6, hardcover or paperbacks. We are currently completing plans with the school and will keep you informed regarding details. We are also investigating opportunities in which we can show our appreciation for their service to our country to the Veterans living at the Victory House in Walterboro. 2 The MOAA Annual Holiday Party will be held on Friday, December 8, 2017, at the Port Royal Golf Club. See the attached flyer for details. A Peek at Early Plans for 2018 February, New Member Dinner March. The World s Largest Yard Sale -- based upon the needs of our target market, we will offer, household goods, accessories, floral arrangements, silk flowers, planters, handbags, carry-on bags, jewelry, throws, baby accessories, toys, beach accessories, sporting equipment. No linens or clothes. Celebrating a job well done with dinner at Hudson s, March 24, 2018 If you are not receiving MOAA emails, you are not alone, many of us are having the same problem. We have found that in many cases they are going to spam or junk mail folders. Open them and go to the bottom where you are likely to find an opportunity to designate Holly Bosworth and/or MOAA as a friendly email. if it continues, please let us know. We are looking forward to seeing you at any and all MOAA functions. Never stay away because of transportation issues, please let us help you. Jayne Danoff President, MSforS 617.861.7010
